A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Davao Occidental in the southern Philippines on Tuesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the quake’s epicenter was located 80 kilometers off the town of Sarangani in the province, at a depth of 100 kilometers.
The Philippines is prone to seismic and volcanic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. In October 2013, a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country, killing more than 220 people.
