Firefighters douse a fire that broke out at a shopping mall in Karachi Sunday. – AFP Firefighters in Pakistan’s largest city were fighting to extinguish a massive blaze Sunday ‌that has killed six people ‌and reduced ‍parts of a shopping mall to rubble in ⁠Karachi’s historic downtown.Videos ⁠showed flames rising from the building ‍as firefighters laboured through the night to stop the fire from spreading in the dense business district. Hundreds of people had gathered around the building, including distraught store ‌owners whose businesses had turned to ash.The fire erupted on Saturday night, with rescue ‍services receiving a call ⁠at 10:38 ‌p.m. (1738 GMT) reporting that ground floor shops at Gul Plaza were ablaze.”When we arrived, the fire from the ground floor had spread to the upper floors, and almost the entire building was already engulfed in flames,” Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassanul Haseeb Khan told ​Reuters.Police surgeon Dr ‌Summaiya Syed said six bodies had been brought to ⁠Karachi’s ‍Civil Hospital and 11 people who had been injured, adding that police were “invoking mass disaster protocols”.Images of the mall’s interior revealed the charred remains of stores ​and a bright orange glow as flames continued to rise throughout the building.Local media reported that parts of the building had started to collapse and rescue officials feared the whole structure could come down.  Related Story Source link

The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced the resumption of air traffic at Aleppo International Airport starting next Tuesday. In a statement, the Authority affirmed it will continue focusing on the airport to develop its services and enhance the travel experience in a manner that meets passengers’ expectations and befits the people of Aleppo and all Syrians. The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport had announced on Jan. 6 the suspension of all flights to and from Aleppo International Airport for 24 hours due to security disturbances in the city of Aleppo. The suspension was subsequently extended for two consecutive weeks as security conditions escalated. The Authority attributed this decision to its concern for the safety of passengers and flight crews, with scheduled flights diverted to Damascus International Airport until the completion of the necessary technical and security assessments.  Source link

Qatar's Nasser al-Attiyah secured his sixth Dakar Rally car title in Saudi Arabia Saturday with Luciano Benavides scraping home by two seconds to claim the bike title.Al-Attiyah, at the wheel of a Dacia, only had to avoid a final day slip-up to top the podium after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 on Friday. The 55-year-old, who took skeet shooting bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games, was adding to his previous Dakar wins in 2011, 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2023.’We've worked very hard since last year. I might not be showing much emotion yet, but it's there, deep down. We are so happy to win,’ said Al-Attiyah at the finish. ‘I think we made the difference on the second day of the first marathon stage by building up a twelve-minute lead. Yesterday was also important. That's when we knew we'd won the race.’ With Belgian co-driver Fabian Lurquin, al-Attiyah took control of the overall standings early on in the motorsport marathon. After placing ninth on the 13th and final stage in Yanbu on the Red Sea he had almost 10 minutes in hand over second-placed Nani Roma (Ford).The 2014 champion Roma said: ‘Yesterday I broke a wheel 50 metres before the end of the special, but we kept believing in our chances and here we are today, in second place. I only have words of gratitude for my team. This victory doesn't belong to me, but to the team. Without them, nothing is possible. You have to congratulate Nasser for pulling it off, but also Mattias Ekstrom, because with two Fords on the podium, we're coming back for more next year.’Roma's Swedish teammate Mattias Ekstrom won the final stage to complete the car podium in third overall. For Romanian car manufacturer Dacia this was their first Dakar victory at only their second attempt.Al-Attiyah already had the second-most overall victories in the car section of the rally. He moved two ahead of Finn Ari Vatanen and Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who are tied for third with four each. Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel won a record eight times in cars between 2004 and 2021 to go with his car six victories in the bike category. ‘This is my sixth victory. I still need to break Peterhansel's record,’ said Al-AttiyahLast year's champion, Saudi Yazeed al-Rajhi, was forced to pull out with mechanical problems last week. A drone view shows people welcoming Syrian army following the withdrawal of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Maskanah, Syria, yesterday.  Syria’s army took control of swathes of northern Syria and threatened to bomb parts of Raqa province yesterday after Kurdish forces pulled back from territory they had held for over a decade. The government appeared to be seeking to extend its grip on parts of the country under Kurdish control a day after President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a “national language” and granting the minority official recognition. The Kurds have said the move fell short of their aspirations. The army drove Kurdish forces from two Aleppo neighbourhoods last week and took control of an area east of the city yesterday, after implementation stalled on a March deal that was supposed to see Kurdish forces integrated into the state. Authorities later announced they had seized two oil fields near the city of Tabqa in Raqa province. An AFP correspondent in Deir Hafer, some 50 kilometres east of Aleppo city, saw several fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) leaving the town and residents returning under heavy army presence. Syria’s army said four soldiers had been killed, while Kurdish forces reported several fighters dead, as both sides traded blame for violating the withdrawal deal.Kurdish authorities ordered a curfew in the Raqa region after the army designated a swathe of territory southwest of the Euphrates River a “closed military zone” and warned it would target what it said were several military sites. SDF chief Mazloum Abdi on Friday had committed to redeploying his forces from outside Aleppo to east of the Euphrates.But the SDF said yesterday that Damascus “violated the recent agreements and betrayed our forces during the implementation of the withdrawal provisions”. It said Kurdish forces were clashing with troops in an area south of Tabqa, “which was outside the scope of the agreement”.The army meanwhile urged the SDF leadership to “immediately fulfil its announced commitments and fully withdraw to the east of the Euphrates River”. The SDF controls swathes of Syria’s oil-rich north and northeast, much of which it captured during the country’s civil war and the fight against the Islamic State group over the past decade.US envoy Tom Barrack was in Erbil yesterday to meet Syrian Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi, a source in the presidency of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region told AFP. The US for years has supported the Kurds but also backs Syria’s new authorities. The US Central Command yesterday urged “Syrian government forces to cease any offensive actions in the areas between Aleppo and Al-Tabqa”, in a post on X.  Source link
