Yemen village left deserted after Houthi shelling

In a tiny village perched on a mountain in Yemen, all the doors are padlocked, a children’s swing hangs motionless and silence reigns after residents fled the shelling of pro-Iran Houthi fighters. Like tens of thousands of people across Yemen who have fled their homes for less violent regions, the vast majority of residents of Al-Akad have left since the Houthis’ lightning offensive engulfed their village. For now, only the bravest have returned, if only to check whether their homes are still standing.“I came to check on our house and the houses of some of our neighbours and make sure they are safe,” said Abdallah Hassan Ahmed, one of just two residents an AFP journalist saw in the village. He held out a large bunch of keys that he said his neighbours had left with him, adding it still wasn’t safe to return.He recounted how he and his family fled under the bombs as Houthi fighters pressed their offensive in Al-Akad, situated on the side of a mountain 950 metres above sea level. “Everyone just grabbed their children and left. We had no choice,” he told AFP.Yemen, the region’s poorest country, relapsed into war in July after years of relative calm. Fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces loyal to the internationally recognised government intensified dramatically in recent days, displacing more than 100,000 people, according to UN data.The Houthis, who have for years controlled swathes of north Yemen, recently advanced at lightning speed into the south, seizing areas around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is crucial to global energy flows. Further inland, in the Taiz region where Al-Akad sits, people cannot return to their villages because of the risk of shelling, according to Ahmed. As a result, the village’s alleyways remain deserted, and the colourful doors of home after home are locked shut. Another resident named Basem Abdullah al-Nuwaihi also braved the journey to inspect his home.“All the families are either in camps or neighbouring villages,” he told AFP.  Source link

Klopp calls up 44 players in huge first Germany squad

Germany coach Jurgen Klopp handed 16 players their first call-ups on Thursday as he unveiled a 44-man squad for his first camp since taking over as coach in the summer. Teams are restricted to naming 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers for each match but the former Liverpool manager took the unusual step of naming a larger squad.Klopp has split the group into two separate squads for Germany's four upcoming Nations League fixtures. The first group will be available for the games fixtures against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 and at home to Greece three days later in Augsburg.The second group will be available for Germany's matches against Serbia in Munich on October 1 and Greece in Thessaloniki on October 4. ‘It's very unusual that you've got four games in two weeks with the national team,’ Klopp said at a press conference in Frankfurt.’I want to get to know as many players as possible in that time… It's not an A-team and a B-team, but the two squads have been created in a way that each fits well together.’Klopp was named as the replacement for Julian Nagelsmann in July after the four-time World Cup winners were eliminated at the last-32 stage of the 2026 World Cup, their third successive early exit from the tournament.   – Ter Stegen goalkeeper, Kimmich captain – Leroy Sane, Deniz Undav, Leon Goretzka and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann have been left out, while veterans Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger have since retired from international football.Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be Germany's number one option in goal. Klopp said the 2015 Champions League winner was the preferred option ‘for the moment’. Ter Stegen left Barcelona for Ajax on a season-long loan in the summer after a torrid run of injuries which restricted him to just 12 competitive matches in the past two years.Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich, the most experienced member of the squad with 114 caps, has retained the captain's armband.The 31-year-old is set to move from right-back to central midfield, where he plays at club level. Undav, one of the few bright spots for Germany at the World Cup, has been omitted. German media reported the former Brighton forward will be given time off to recover from an Achilles tendon injury. Among the 16 potential debutants are Eintracht Frankfurt's Younes Ebnoutalib, who was in the second division a season ago, along with Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch, Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt and Celtic midfielder Mika Baur. ‘There's a couple of lads here who will surprise you, that's clear, but we saw something in the lads, plenty of potential, and we want to be part of their development,’ Klopp said.  Source link

Saudi civil defence says shrapnel from Houthi drone kills 1 after interception

Saudi Arabia’s civil defence agency on Thursday said one person was killed when shrapnel from an intercepted Houthi drone crashed down over Taif governorate that lies east of Makkah.”The fall of shrapnel from a downed drone in Taif governorate resulted in one death, two injuries, and material damage to several buildings and vehicles,” the agency said in a statement posted on social media, adding that the person killed was a Yemeni national. Pakistan announced on Thursday a cut in fuel for official vehicles, ‌bans on vehicle purchases by ​the state, foreign visits ‌by officials, and official dinners, ‌as part of ⁠a ‌slew of austerity ‌measures in a bid to conserve energy as ⁠fuel prices spike due to the Gulf conflict.  Pakistan is facing the prospect of gas and power shortages as the Gulf conflict disrupts LNG supplies and drives up petrol and diesel ​prices.The austerity measures, being implemented for the second time this year, also include a ban ‌on government purchase ⁠of all durable ​goods except IT procurement and ​a switch to teleconferencing for meetings. Pakistan had unveiled similar measures in March, closing down schools for two weeks, cutting fuel use across government and pushing office workers to work more from home in a bid to conserve fuel and cut government spending. The ‌South Asian nation ‌implemented a ⁠new policy starting Wednesday that offers motorcycle, rickshaw ⁠and ⁠small-car owners a subsidy of 100 rupees (36 US cents) a litre on a capped monthly quota in a bid to ease the impact of rising prices. Attacks by the ​US and Israel on Iran over six months ago has led to the disruption of oil and gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Now, fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis also imperils trade through the Red Sea. Palestinian Authority says US denial of Abbas visa to attend UN ‘unjustified’
