Israeli strikes hit Lebanon after evacuation warnings

The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in several south Lebanon towns Wednesday, and accused the group of rebuilding its capabilities close to the border. The Israeli military has kept up frequent air strikes in Lebanon in spite of a ceasefire sealed last November that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.The latest raids came a day after 13 people were killed in a strike that Israel said had targeted Hamas members in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon — the deadliest attack since the truce came into effect. Israel’s military said Wednesday that it had struck “several weapons storage facilities belonging to Hezbollah’s rocket unit in southern Lebanon”, calling such sites “a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon”. It had previously warned residents to evacuate the area around sites in the southern Lebanese towns of Deir Kifa, Shehur, Ainata and Tayr Felsay.Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) later said raids hit all four locations. In Deir Kifa, Lebanese soldiers deployed near the targeted building, which collapsed after the strike, an AFP correspondent saw. An AFP journalist in Tayr Felsay saw fireballs and smoke erupt after the raid there. In its evacuation warnings on X, the Israeli military had said it would strike Hezbollah “military infrastructure… in response to Hezbollah’s prohibited attempts to rebuild its activities in the area”.In a subsequent statement, the military singled out the town of Beit Lif, just a few kilometres from the Israeli border. It accused Hezbollah of rebuilding “dozens of fighter infrastructure sites in the area of the village, including headquarters and weapons storage facilities”, some inside civilian homes.Lebanon says Israel is violating the truce with its strikes, and by maintaining troops in five areas of the country’s south. Under heavy US pressure and fears of expanded Israeli attacks, Lebanon has committed to disarming Hezbollah, but the fighter group has rejected the idea of handing over its weapons.Earlier Wednesday, Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed and 11 others wounded in an Israeli strike on a vehicle in south Lebanon’s Tiri that Israel said killed a Hezbollah fighters. The NNA reported that the man killed worked for the local municipality, and said the strike took place as a university bus carrying students passed by, wounding some on board. On Tuesday, Israel said it struck a Hamas training compound in south Lebanon’s Ain al-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp. The Palestinian fighter group denied it had military installations in Lebanon’s refugee camps and called Israel’s claims “lies”. AI-powered robot dances for Putin days after another Russian robot stumbles

(Reuters) An AI-powered robot danced for President Vladimir Putin Wednesday at an exhibition put on by Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, designed to showcase the company’s technological advances. The performance, which was shown on state TV, showed the Kremlin chief standing opposite the humanoid robot as it explained to him what it was before dancing to what it said was its favourite track. “My name is Green.I am the first Russian humanoid robot with embedded artificial intelligence. This means that I am not just a programme on a screen, but a physical embodiment of technology,” the robot told Putin. Sberbank says the robot’s software will be constantly upgraded, that it has the potential to perform physical tasks, and that a pilot project will see it integrated into parts of its business.The unusual event was watched closely by Putin’s bodyguards, one of whom stood between the robot and the Russian leader afterwards to make sure it moved away from him and did not get too close. Putin called the robot’s performance “very beautiful” and thanked it before continuing his tour.The performance comes days after the Moscow presentation of another Russian robot purported to harness AI – called Aidol – went wrong after the robot fell flat on its face shortly after appearing on stage. Putin also inspected one of Sberbank’s new generation smart cash machines which with the help of a camera can give customers a summary of their health based on 10 indicators such as pulse and blood pressure.Putin said at that event that he’d been through one of his regular health checkups recently and that everything was fine with him. The gruelling search for Gaza’s dead under the rubble

REUTERS Standing beside the mound of rubble that was once his home, Ahmed Salim cannot hold back the tears as he struggles to retrieve the bodies of loved ones trapped underneath tonnes of debris. Over 30 people were killed when his home was struck, he told AFP, among them “my wife, my children, my mother, my father”. “I’m the only one who survived,” he said, pointing to the pile of broken concrete and twisted metal that was once a five-storey building in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood.The building was destroyed on December 24, 2024 and he has been waiting ever since to retrieve their bodies and give them a proper burial. “The only thing that matters to me is to be able to bury them,” the 43-year-old said. After two years of war between Israel and Hamas that ravaged the Gaza Strip, thousands of other Palestinians are in a similar situation. According to UN data, as of late September, the Israeli military had damaged or destroyed around 83 % of the buildings in Gaza that stood prior the war.The densely-populated Palestinian territory is covered in 61.5mn tonnes of debris: nearly 170 times the weight of New York City’s Empire State Building. Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza’s civil defence agency, estimates that about 10,000 bodies are buried under the rubble. “We cannot extract thousands of bodies without heavy machinery. We need the means to lift the roofs and the tonnes of cement,” said Bassal, whose organisation conducts search and rescue operations in Gaza.Iyad Rayan holds out the same hope as Salim: burying his wife and children with dignity. “My wife, my son Samir and my daughter Lana are still here under the rubble,” he told AFP by the wreckage of his Gaza City home, which he said was destroyed in early October this year. “I want to send an appeal to the whole world: help me retrieve them,” the 55-year-old said. Amal Abdel Aal is waiting for heavy equipment to enter the Gaza Strip so the bodies of her son and brother can be recovered.They have been under the rubble in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City since the early days of the two-year war. “They never leave my thoughts. My heart aches at the thought of dogs reaching their bodies and eating them,” said the 57-year-old woman now living in southern Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people have sought shelter during the war. “I will only find relief when I have buried them, even if only a single bone remains.” After the ceasefire began on October 10, Israel allowed Egyptian bulldozers to enter Gaza to help recover the remains of hostages, to be returned under the US-brokered truce deal.”The world is unfair. We see bulldozers digging to retrieve the Israeli prisoners, while no one cares about the thousands of our martyrs,” said Abdel Aal. ‘SADNESS, LOSS AND PAIN’ The October 2023 Hamas storming of Israel resulted in the war. Israel’s retaliatory assault on Gaza killed more than 69,500 people, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the UN considers reliable.Since the ceasefire, Palestinians have been able to recover around 500 bodies in areas that emergency workers could access following the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, Bassal said. The halt in fighting allowed Amer Abu al-Tarabish to return to Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, he said, to extract the bodies of his parents from the ruins of their family home “with my bare hands”. “My parents, my brother and his children, his wife, my uncle, his wife and their children… Thirty people remained under the rubble for more than a year,” he said. “I pulled out their bodies intact; they were not decomposed,” he recounted, adding that he was “overwhelmed by sadness, loss and pain”. “I was able to bring them out one by one, say goodbye to them, and imprint their faces in my memory before burying them.” For other Gaza residents, even this small consolation may never come.Bassal noted that thousands of people had been reported missing, especially during major population displacements as the fighting shifted. “We don’t know whether they were killed or arrested” by Israeli forces, he said. As for families who buried their loved ones hastily during the war, many consider those graves to be temporary, or feel that proper rites have not yet been observed. Mohammed Naim, 47, said his family had to bury 43 relatives in just seven graves. “We placed the remains of each family in a single grave,” he said. “But we swore over their graves that we would exhume them and rebury them, with dignity, in Gaza City.” Related Story Source…

Gaza water provider resumes services

A Gaza company that operates water desalination plants serving nearly half of the enclave’s population said Wednesday it had resumed operations after Hamas-led security freed a staff member whom they detained on Monday. A statement issued by the Abdul Salam Yassin Company, whose services reach more than 1mn people, said the decision to resume operations came after the issue was resolved, adding that the staff member was “fine and in good health”.The company apologised for what it said was a “misunderstanding” that led to the detention of its employee and affirmed its respect for the Hamas-led government in Gaza. Hamas government officials declined comment on the arrest, but a source Wednesday confirmed the employee had been freed, without elaborating on the reasons for his detention.The Palestinian fighter group has been gradually reasserting control in areas of Gaza from which Israeli forces have withdrawn under an October 10 ceasefire deal as talks over the war-devastated Palestinian territory’s future grind on. Israel halted all water and electricity supply to Gaza early in the war triggered by Hamas’ cross-border storming in October 2023, but partially eased the utilities blockade later.Most of Gaza’s water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed and pumps from its aquifers often rely on electricity from small generators. But fuel for generators is rarely available given Israel’s curbs on deliveries into the enclave, citing the risk of diversion into Hamas’ hands.The company’s work is vital to the population in Gaza, where clean water is scarce. It owns three major desalination plants, and 80 smaller ones across the territory. It also runs over 70 trucks that carry water containers across Gaza. US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for post-war Gaza, whose first stage was the ceasefire, stipulates that Hamas disarm and renounce any future role in governance of the enclave, but who would replace them has yet to be agreed. Hamas has refused to yield its weaponry before a Palestinian state is established. Israeli forces continue to control around half of the coastal Gaza Strip. QERC to organize Al Zubarah International Cup at Marathon Village in Sealine

 The Qatar Endurance Racing Club (QERC) announced that it will organize the Al Zubarah International Cup on Friday at the Marathon Village in Sealine, with the participation of 75 riders of both genders.The competition program is set to begin with veterinary inspections for the horses, followed by the 100 km international endurance race, in addition to a qualifying international race over the same distance.The Cup will be contested over the first phase spanning 35 km, the second 25 km, and the third and fourth phases 20 km each.Vice President of QERC, Mohammed Majed Al Sulaiti, emphasized that all organizational and coaching arrangements have been primed to ensure an exceptional and well-managed event.The large-scale participation reflects the preeminence of this race on both the domestic and global stages, highlighting the club’s steadfast commitment to providing a safe and competitive environment that allows riders and horses to perform well, Al Sulaiti said.He predicted that the race would witness fierce competition among numerous riders vying for the top positions in the second event of the club’s 2025-2026 season calendar.Notably, QERC previously organized the Al Wasmi Race, the debut race of the 2025-2026 season, at Marathona Village in Sealine over a 100 km distance with 66 riders participating Source link
