 Mohammed Ben Sulayem was re-elected as president of motorsport’s governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA) on Friday in an election in which he faced no challengers.The Dubai-born 64-year-old was the only candidate in the vote held in Tashkent in an election that has been contested in the courts.Two would-be candidates, Swiss national Laura Villars and American former FIA steward Tim Mayer, were denied the chance to run against Ben Sulayem due to FIA rules.  Under the Paris-based FIA election regulations, candidates are required to appoint vice-presidents from each of the six global regions, chosen from a list approved by the Paris-based FIA.But there is only one vice-president listed from South America, Brazilian Fabiana Ecclestone – the wife of ex-Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone – and she gave her backing to Ben Sulayem.  A Paris court last week decided not to suspend the election but ordered a trial to examine the electoral process after hearing an urgent application from Villars, a 28-year-old Swiss driver.”The judge hearing the summary proceedings ruled that this dispute was a matter for the trial court, and we will therefore continue this lawsuit against the FIA before the trial judges. A first hearing is scheduled for February 16, 2026,” Villars’ lawyer Robin Binsard said in a statement last week.  The lawyer said that “given the challenges raised, (the election result) may be examined, questioned or annulled by the court”.As a result Ben Sulayem, who succeeded Jean Todt at the head of the FIA in 2021, was confirmed in the post — subject to the upcoming court verdict.  “Thank you to all our FIA Members for voting in remarkable numbers and placing your trust in me once again. We have overcome many obstacles but here today, together, we are stronger than ever,” Ben Sulayem said in a statement.  ‘Cleaning the house’The FIA said in a statement that Friday’s election was “conducted in line with the FIA’s statutes through a robust and transparent voting process, reflecting the democratic foundations of the federation and the collective voice of its global membership”.  The FIA is responsible for organising the Formula One and rally world championships, as well as promoting road safety. It has more than 240 clubs across 146 countries, representing around 80 million members.A former rally driver, Ben Sulayem’s time at the helm of motorsport has been dogged by controversy.  The Emirati was taken to task by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for using stereotypical language when discussing the use of foul outbursts by drivers on team radios.Drivers fell out with the FIA over its crackdown on swearing. The guidelines were strengthened in January, triggering an indignant response from drivers.Controversial fines were later reduced after a backlash from the grid.  In April, the FIA’s deputy president Robert Reid resigned with a parting shot at Ben Sulayem, criticising his governance and a lack of transparency.Ben Sulayem, nonetheless, defended his record last weekend as he ahead of another four years at the helm of motorsport.”I would say I am looking forward for the next four years,” said Ben Sulayem, who has helped the FIA overturn a 24 million deficit in 2021 into a 4.7 million profit last year.”Cleaning the house was not easy, getting the right people in the FIA was a challenge. Now I can tell you, it was worth the four years of investment.”And if you tell me now ‘OK, if you have the power to rewind the four years, what would you do differently?’. Nothing.”  Source link

Lionel Messi will unveil a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself in India on Saturday as he embarks on a three-day tour of the country that has sparked a fan frenzy.The iron sculpture in Kolkata, which shows Messi holding aloft the World Cup, is part of a so-called GOAT Tour that will take in four Indian cities and a possible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 38-year-old Argentina and Inter Miami superstar will unveil the monument virtually rather than in person for security reasons.A ‘Hola Messi’ fan zone has also been set up in Kolkata where on display is a life-sized replica of Messi sat on a throne. The hall also recreates his Miami home, complete with mannequins of his family members.Football fan Samir Nandy said it would be ‘a dream come true’ to catch a glimpse of his idol.’Legends are not made by success alone. It is his resilience that made me believe in him,’ Nandy, 64, said in Kolkata. ‘The statue is a fitting tribute to him.’Monti Paul, the statue's main sculptor, told AFP the structure was built inside 40 days. ‘It's a matter of pride to build the sculpture of Messi. It's the tallest statue I have made,’ he said.The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will also meet Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly during his whirlwind trip to Kolkata. Ahead of his arrival, Messi said it was an honour to visit India and interact with the fans.’India is a very special country and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago — the fans were fantastic,’ Messi said in a statement.’India is a passionate football nation and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game.’ After Kolkata, where Messi will play a short friendly match, he will head to Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi.In Hyderabad he will attend a concert in his honour and play another friendly.  He is reportedly scheduled to meet Modi in the capital.Messi won his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award this week after propelling Inter Miami to the MLS title and leading the league in goals. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker will spearhead Argentina's defence of the World Cup in June-July in North America.  New Zealand's Hayden Wilde and Great Britain's Kate Waugh were crowned T100 Triathlon World Champions after winning the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final in Lusail on Friday.Wilde capped a phenomenal season with his sixth victory of the year, completing a perfect campaign that saw him win every T100 race he entered. For Waugh, a dramatic victory – crossing the line on her knees through sheer exhaustion – sealed her first ever World Championship title. Both athletes had prepared for the finale with training camps in Abu Dhabi following the Dubai T100 in November, using the UAE capital's world-class facilities and similar climate to acclimatise for Qatar conditions.Wilde's win was never in doubt. The Olympic bronze medallist led into T2 after a blistering bike leg and controlled the 18km run to cross the line in 3:06:08. His sixth victory of the season – following wins in Singapore,  London, the French Riviera, Spain and Wollongong – earned him a perfect score across the 2025 T100 season. The triumph is all the more remarkable given the horror bike crash Wilde suffered in Japan at the start of May, which punctured his lung, broke six ribs and left him needing surgery on his left scapula.’It's pretty special from starting in Singapore, then being in hospital for a bit, and then coming back and winning a few races, and then finishing here in Qatar,’ said Wilde. ‘It's been a long season but it's nice to finish up.’ Wilde takes $25,000 for the win in Qatar – added to the $125,000 already earned in race wins this year – plus $200,000 for winning the T100 Race to Qatar. Morgan Pearson of the USA produced a storming run to finish second in 3:07:23, moving up to 4th in the final standings. Belgium's Marten Van Riel, the 2024 world champion, came home third in 3:08:14.Waugh's win was anything but comfortable. The 26-year-old from Gateshead led from the front throughout but paid for her efforts in the closing stages, slowing to a walk in the final straight before stumbling to her knees as she crossed the line in 3:31:30. ‘Oh my gosh, that was the most dramatic way to win the world title,’ said Waugh. ‘I've always been a bit of a drama queen, so perhaps that was the best way to win it. I'm completely overwhelmed with emotion right now.’ Waugh had led the T100 Race to Qatar standings throughout the season, finishing on the podium in all six T100 races she entered. Her consistency earned her 183 points and a $200,000 bonus on top of the $25,000 race win. Georgia Taylor-Brown charged home to finish second, just 20 seconds behind, while Julie Derron – who had pushed Waugh all season – took third to secure second place in the overall standings.  Jordan booked a berth in the FIFA Arab Cup semi-finals as they edged Iraq 1-0 at the Education City Stadium. Ali Olwan’s first-half penalty proved the difference in front of 40,000 fans in Al Rayyan, as he maintained a remarkable record of scoring from the spot in each of Jordan’s four matches at the tournament.Later at the Al Bayt Stadium, the United Arab Emirates dumped defending champions Algeria 7-6 on penalties, after the match had ended 1-1 in both regulation and extra time.Two years ago, Jordan and Iraq clashed at the start of the knockout stage at a major tournament in Qatar, as the Nashama edged the Lions of Mesopotamia in the round of 16 at the Asian Cup.This time, also at the Education City, it was Jordan once again who won by a single goal, with Olwan scoring for the fourth straight match. His goal came late in an opening half that produced almost no other chances of note, despite Jordan having the better of the play. They did, however, lose star forward Yazan al-Naimat to an early knee injury.After the break, Iraq’s talisman Ali Jasim began to see much more of the ball and his team looked far better for it. Twice the dazzling winger came close midway through the half — first with a rasping effort from distance, then with a driven shot — both producing smart saves from Yazeed Abulaila.Jordan’s Mohannad Abu Taha, who has already scored one spectacular long-range effort at the tournament, came close to producing another late on as Jordan saw out the narrow win to book a last-four date with Saudi Arabia.Meanwhile, the UAE qualified for the semi-finals after a thrilling win over Algeria. Neither team showed much desire in the first half to assert dominance, with a cagey, low-quality opening 45 minutes producing few chances. The UAE focused on tightening their defensive line and maintaining discipline, while the referee disallowed a second Algerian goal for offside in the 44th minute.The second half brought signs of change as Adel Boulbina put Algeria ahead early, following up a shot from Youssef Brahimi that rebounded off the UAE goalkeeper’s hands and slotting it home to the right of the keeper.The UAE pushed forward, increasing their pressure on the Algerian defence in search of an equaliser, and they succeeded in restoring parity through Bruno in the 64th minute. He converted a pass from Caio, finishing with his left foot into the Algerian net.Neither side managed to break the deadlock in extra time, despite Algeria’s advantage, sending the match to penalties, where the UAE prevailed to set up a semi-final meeting with Morocco.  Source link

The penultimate match of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup pits the champions of South America and Africa in the FIFA Challenger Cup. Three days after they saw off Cruz Azul in the FIFA Derby of the Americas, Flamengo now meet Pyramids at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium today to determine who will be the FIFA Challenger Cup champions. In addition to the standalone silverware, there’s also another major prize on offer for the winner: a date with Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, to be held in Qatar on Wednesday. Having been in Qatar now for close to a week, Flamengo should be in high spirits after they saw off Cruz Azul 2-1 to win the Derby of the Americas. That continued an extraordinary month of title-gathering for the Rio giants, who won both the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores and domestic Serie A crowns before their departure to Qatar. Giorgian De Arrescaeta, Flamengo midfielder, said on the eve of the match: “Each team has its identity and its players. This is a team that works and fights incredibly hard on the pitch. We’re finishing off a season full of major achievements and still fighting for the dream of becoming world champions. I still haven’t won a title here in Qatar. I’m happy to be back here, but the focus is first on reaching the final, and then on trying to become champions.”    This is Flamengo’s second participation in a FIFA competition this year, having participated in the Club World Cup where they topped their group without losing a match before bowing out against Bayern Munich in the round of 16. Flamengo twice competed in the previous version of this competition, reaching the final in 2019 where they lost to Liverpool, and securing third place in the 2022 edition. Flamengo have lost only one of their last 12 matches in all competitions.  African champions Pyramids also arrive in a good spell of form, sitting second in the Egyptian Premier League with just the one loss through their first dozen fixtures. Head coach Krunoslav Jurcic has named a strong travelling squad, headlined by Pharoahs stars Ahmed El Shenawy, Mohamed Hamdy, Mohanad Lasheen and Mostafa Fathi. Off the back of a wonderful showing in a 3-1 win in Jeddah against Al Ahli in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, they also know that they can compete at this level. Krunoslav Jurcic, Pyramids coach, said: “First of all, I’m so proud to be part of such a big competition, an elite competition with the biggest clubs in the world. We had an excellent season in Africa, winning the Champions League and now we came to Qatar to play the semi-final and hopefully the final. It’s a big reward for us and I want to enjoy it and for the players to enjoy all the moments of the competition because this is the top level of football.” The Intercontinental Cup brings together the six winners from each confederation’s top-tier club tournament in a condensed format. It is designed not to be a competitor to the 32-team Club World Cup, launched last year by FIFA and organised every four years.Players to watch At 31, Giorgian de Arrascaeta is arguably at the peak of his considerable powers. Flamengo’s playmaking prince had another superb domestic campaign where he plundered 18 goals and provided 14 assists in the league. The Uruguayan star then immediately translated that form onto the global stage, scoring both goals in his team’s 2-1 win over Cruz Azul earlier this week to book their place in the Challenger Cup. There is no question where the Pyramids goal threat is likely to come from and that is in the form of star striker Fiston Mayele. The Congo DR marksman struck a hat-trick as the Egyptian side toppled Al Ahli in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup and although he has been held without a goal in his past three domestic outings, he looms as a player that Flamengo will need to keep in check. Last year, the Late Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani Trophy was won by Al Sij Al Sakb.
