Turkiye is holding talks with countries in the region aimed at establishing a joint security alliance, the Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan has said. Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with local and international media in Ankara, Fidan said regional stability depends on closer and more effective cooperation among neighbouring countries.He warned that a lack of trust between regional states creates opportunities for external powers to intervene, or for terrorist groups to emerge and fuel internal conflicts.Fidan stressed the need for countries in the region to cooperate on security matters and to establish shared platforms to do so. He said regional states should make mutual commitments to guarantee each other’s security. According to the foreign minister, such cooperation could resolve up to 80 percent of the region’s problems. An Israeli military force, consisting of eight vehicles and three tanks, briefly entered the Quneitra countryside in southern Syria on Friday. Local sources reported that the force deployed in the village of Suwaiseh for about an hour before moving toward the village of Al Dawaya, while tanks positioned themselves on Abu Qubays hill. The force later withdrew without making any arrests.The incident comes amid repeated violations of the 1974 disengagement agreement. The prime minister of Yemen has been replaced by his foreign minister after the premier submitted the government’s resignation, the country’s Saudi-backed presidential body said. Prime Minister Salim Saleh BinBuriek met Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi and “submitted the government’s resignation to pave the way for the formation of a new government”, a statement published by news agency Saba, said. The presidential council posted on state media that foreign minister “Dr Shaya Mohsen Zindani is appointed prime minister and tasked with forming the government”. The statement published on Saba cited “efforts to restore state institutions, strengthen the unity of sovereign decision-making” and “defeating the coup” as reasons for the premier’s resignation. Saudi Arabia informed Iran it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used to attack it, two sources close to the kingdom’s government said yesterday, as Washington threatens Tehran with possible military strikes. The message was conveyed as the United States warned it could respond to an Iranian government crackdown on protests, while Tehran has said it would strike US military and shipping assets in the event of a new attack. “Saudi Arabia has informed Tehran directly that it will not be part of any military action taken against it, and that its territory and airspace will not be used for that purpose,” a source close to the Saudi military said. An Iranian man arrested during a wave of protests, who NGOs and Washington had warned faced imminent execution, has not been sentenced to death and is not facing charges that risk the death penalty, the judiciary said on Thursday.Erfan Soltani is imprisoned in Karaj outside Tehran after his arrest and is facing charges of propaganda against Iran’s Islamic system and acting against national security, the judiciary said in a statement carried by state TV.He has “not been sentenced to death” and if he is convicted, “the punishment, according to the law, will be imprisonment, as the death penalty does not exist for such charges”, it added.
