WFP to reduce food rations for Sudan due to funding shortfall

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that it will reduce food rations for Sudanese communities in famine due to a funding shortfall, effective next month.”Beginning in January, rations will be reduced to 70 percent for communities in famine areas and 50 percent for those at risk of famine,” WFP Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Ross Smith told reporters in Geneva.”As of April we will fall off a cliff when it comes to funding,” Smith added.Last week, the UN and its partners launched a global humanitarian appeal to save millions of lives in war zones and conflict areas, including Sudan which requires $2.9 billion to provide life-saving assistance to 20 million people trapped in the world’s largest displacement crisis. ( Source link

Homes damaged in renewed Israeli airstrikes on Southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on several areas in southern Lebanon late last night.According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), the raids were launched in multiple waves, targeting the valley between the towns of Azzeh and Roumine Arki, the outskirts of the town of Jbaa, and the heights of Jabal Safi.NNA added that Israeli aircraft also struck Wadi Zifta twice, noting that the airstrikes caused damage to a number of homes on the outskirts of Jbaa.The November 2014 ceasefire agreement mandated the withdrawal of Israeli forces from border villages and towns in southern Lebanon within 60 days. Yet Israeli forces continue to maintain a presence in five locations, in defiance of the agreement, despite Beirut’s approval of an extension until February 18.   Source link

Israeli occupation forces arrest 6 Palestinians in West Bank

The Israeli occupation forces arrested six Palestinians in the West Bank on Monday.Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported that the occupation forces arrested two Palestinians in Nablus after storming the city at dawn and raiding several neighborhoods. They also arrested one Palestinian in Hebron after raiding his home in the Wadi al-Hariyah neighborhood.The occupation forces set up military checkpoints at the northern entrances of Hebron, and at the entrances of the towns of Beit Ummar, Sa’ir, and Halhul. They stopped vehicles, searched them, and inspected passengers identity cards, causing heavy traffic congestion.In Bethlehem, the occupation forces arrested three Palestinians after raiding the village of al-Rashayda and the town of Za'tara.Meanwhile, one Palestinian was injured this morning by Israeli occupation forces' gunfire near the annexation and expansion wall in the town of al-Ram, north of occupied Jerusalem.   Source link

GCC welcomes UN resolution renewing UNRWA mandate

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's resolution to renew the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for an additional three years.In a statement, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said UNRWA's role has become more critical than ever in light of the escalating challenges facing the Palestinian people, which require intensified international efforts to meet their basic needs, particularly in the fields of education, health and emergency humanitarian assistance.He reaffirmed the GCC states' continued support for UNRWA's programs and projects, stemming from their steadfast position on the Palestinian cause and their firm commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and defending their legitimate rights. He stressed the importance of ensuring the sustainability of UNRWA's operations and enabling it to fulfill its mandate with full efficiency and effectiveness.   Source link

Heavy Israeli bombardment continues across Gaza despite ceasefire

Israeli occupation forces carried out heavy air and artillery bombardment across several areas of the Gaza Strip overnight and into the morning, in a renewed violation of the ceasefire agreement that entered into force on October 10. The Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported that Israeli helicopters opened intense fire inside the so-called “yellow line” in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, while Israeli artillery shelled the northeastern areas of the city. Israeli warplanes also carried out strikes on neighborhoods in Gaza City in the north, Rafah in the south, and the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, directly targeting homes and infrastructure.At the same time, Israeli naval vessels opened fire off the coast of Khan Younis, further escalating tensions along the coastal enclave. WAFA added that earlier on Thursday, Israeli occupation forces carried out a heavy and sustained bombardment on Rafah, alongside extensive demolition operations. Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, Israel has continued to violate the agreement on a near-daily basis, resulting in the deaths and injuries of dozens of Palestinians, amid growing international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. United Nations Interim Force condemns Israeli airstrikes on Southern Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned the Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon, describing them as “a clear violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.In a statement issued on Friday, UNIFIL called on the Israeli army to make use of the established liaison and coordination mechanisms, warning against any actions that could further escalate the situation.Separately, the peacekeeping force reported that one of its patrols had come under fire near Bint Jbeil, with no injuries reported. UNIFIL affirmed that it continues to monitor and report on developments on the ground.The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon also urged full adherence to Resolution 1701 and to the understandings reached to date, to safeguard the progress achieved so far. Egypt, Russia Foreign Ministers discuss Gaza, international developments

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed in a phone call today with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov the developments in the Gaza Strip, regional and international issues of mutual concern, as well as ways to enhance bilateral relations.The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Abdelatty stressed during the call the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and moving forward with the second phase of US President Donald Trumpâ€s peace plan, noting the necessity of enabling the International Stabilization Force to carry out its tasks in order to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza. Regarding developments in Sudan, the Egyptian Foreign Minister reviewed the efforts exerted by his country within the framework of the Quad Mechanism to stop the conflict and preserve the unity and integrity of the Sudanese state. On the Iranian nuclear issue, the Egyptian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of continuing efforts aimed at de-escalation, confidence-building, and creating conditions that provide a genuine opportunity for diplomatic solutions and the resumption of dialogue, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive agreement on the nuclear issue that takes into account the interests of all parties and contributes to achieving regional security and stability.  In terms of the latest developments in the Ukrainian crisis, Abdelatty reiterated Egyptâ€s steadfast position, calling for continued efforts to reach peaceful settlements to crises through dialogue and diplomatic means in a manner that preserves security and stability.  Source link
