The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced the death of one peacekeeper and the serious injury of another following a projectile explosion at one of its positions near Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
“We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances”, UNIFIL said in a statement.
UNIFIL reiterated its call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers.
UNIFIL emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
