(AFP) Teenage Australian sprint star Gout Gout on Thursday pulled out of next month’s World Athletics U20 Championships after suffering a serious hamstring injury in training.The 18-year-old has set the athletics world alight with a series of scorching runs.He won the 200m at the Australian championships in April in 19.67sec, faster than Usain Bolt at the same age, and made his Diamond League debut last month in Oslo.Gout chose to skip the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this month to focus on the under-20 world championships at Eugene in August, but his season has come to an abrupt halt.”Unfortunately I suffered an injury to my left hamstring last night at training in Brisbane,” he said on Instagram.”I received this morning the MRI report, unfortunately the news is not good and I will not be able to compete in Eugene at the world U20 championships next month.”Gout said the scans revealed a grade three tear, which typically takes months of rehabilitation.”My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster,” he said.Athletics Australia said it would support him in his recovery.”Gout has had a phenomenal couple of years, and has a long and exciting athletics career ahead of him,” a spokesperson said.”While this will be disappointing for Gout himself as well as his many fans, unfortunately injuries are part of the sport. “It is important that he takes the time to rehabilitate, recover and return to the track to compete when he is ready.”   Related Story Source…

Russia to take on World Athletics at CAS over ban

Russia has appealed their World Athletics Ban and have approached the top court CAS to overturn the decision. (Reuters) The Russian Athletics Federation (RAF) announced on Thursday they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) challenging World Athletics (WA) extending the blanket ban on their track and field athletes.”Russian Athletics notes that World Athletics’ decision affects the fundamental interests of athletics in Russia and restricts Russian athletes’ right to compete, on grounds that Russian Athletics considers discriminatory,” read the federation’s statement.WA responded saying: “We take note of the Russian athletics federation’s appeal to CAS, and we will be strenuously defending our position.”Last Friday, WA announced that the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes – imposed in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – would remain in place.WA president Sebastian Coe said the body’s Council Meeting had “been consequential and methodical in reviewing the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus and in identifying a conditional pathway back into international competition”.”We presented options for the Council to consider on this matter, however, the original decision remains on the sanctions that protect the integrity and fairness of our competitions, with no tangible movement towards peace negotiations having materialised.”WA’s stand has been in contrast with other federations – World Gymnastics and the International Skating Union the latest to ease restrictions.Those came before this week’s announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that under strict conditions Russian athletes would be allowed to compete in team events and qualifying competitions for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”We made it clear that we wanted to ensure all athletes have the possibility to compete at the Olympic Games and not be held responsible for their government’s actions,” IOC president Kirsty Coventry said after an Executive Board meeting in Lausanne. ‘Ambulances and hearses’However, the IOC kept in place the ban on the Russian national anthem being played and the flag being displayed, for the time being, and stipulated returning Russian athletes would have to pass “multiple” doping tests before being allowed to participate.The IOC said individual sports could decide whether to allow the flag and anthem at their own events or stage competitions in Russia.Ukraine slammed the IOC decision as “premature” and “unfounded” while Moscow’s invasion drags on through its fifth year.Athletics global governing body examined the impact of the conflict on athletics in Ukraine.”The dedicated fund that World Athletics established in 2022 to support Ukraine is helping ameliorate some of that impact, but there is no doubt the ability of Ukraine and its athletes to train and compete remains severely compromised,” WA said.Coe has said if a peace agreement is reached then it is not for sport to stand in the way of the Russians’ return.The conflict, though, has left its mark on Coe after a visit he paid to Ukraine.”When you get to Kyiv (train station), there’s probably 50 or 60 ambulances and hearses waiting on the platform,” he told AFP in an interview last year.”Families waiting for the news. They have two carriages, mobile operating theatres and intensive care units, where amputations are taking place as the train’s coming back.”So, sorry, it’s not something I could ever really be neutral about.”  Related Story Source link

Arab Interior Ministers’ Council condemns targeting of Qatari LNG tanker and Saudi carrier, attacks on Kuwait, Bahrain

The General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers condemned on Thursday the targeting of the Qatari LNG tanker ‘Al Rekayyat’ and Saudi crude carrier ‘Wadiyan’ as they transited the Strait of Hormuz. It also denounced the attacks targeting the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Bahrain.In a statement, the General Secretariat said these acts constitute a violation of international laws and conventions and the principles of good neighborliness, and represent a dangerous escalation that jeopardizes regional and global economic interests and threatens international peace and security.Reiterating its condemnation of these attacks, it affirmed its solidarity with and support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, and the Kingdom of Bahrain in the measures they take to protect their security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, facilities, citizens, and residents. Egypt condemns Iranian attacks on Kuwait, Bahrain

China activates emergency response as Typhoon Bavi approaches

China's Ministry of Emergency Management on Thursday activated a Level-IV emergency response for flood control and typhoon prevention in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, with the possibility of upgrading the emergency response in accordance with the development of the typhoon.According to meteorological forecasts, the center of Super Typhoon Bavi was located over waters about 1,490 kilometers south-east of Keelung, Taiwan, on Wednesday.The typhoon is forecast to move westward before turning northwestward at a speed of around 15 to 20 km per hour, and may make landfall along the coast between Fuqing in Fujian Province and Wenling in Zhejiang Province on Saturday, as a strong typhoon.China has a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe.  Source link

Bahrain announces interception of several Iranian air attacks

Bahrain announced Thursday that its air defense systems intercepted several Iranian air attacks.The General Command of the Bahrain Defense Force said that Iran continues its systematic aggression through its criminal attacks using missiles and drones targeting civilians in Bahrain.It urged everyone to exercise caution and avoid approaching or touching any unfamiliar or suspicious objects resulting from the remnants of the Iranian attack, and to report them immediately.It also affirmed that all its weapons and units are at the highest levels of readiness and are fully prepared to defend Bahrain. Furthermore, it confirmed its readiness to handle these debris safely, ensuring the safety of all citizens and residents.The General Command of the Bahrain Defense Force emphasized that the deliberate use of missiles and drones to target civilians and private property constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.  Related Story Source link

Dalic quits after ‘incredible era’ as Croatia coach

(Reuters) Croatia’s most successful football coach, Zlatko Dalic, resigned on Wednesday, ending a tenure that included taking the team to the 2018 World Cup final.”As much as I still feel the ambition and desire to achieve new successes with Croatia, I feel that this is the right moment to bring this incredible era to a close,” he said in a statement.”I am leaving with a full heart and proud that I have made my contribution to the greatest achievements in the history of Croatian football,” the 59-year-old added.Dalic took over as coach in October 2017.Apart from their final defeat in Russia, where Croatia, led by Luka Modric, lost to France, Dalic guided the nation to the 2022 Qatar World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 last 16.”Zlatko’s name will remain forever written in golden letters in the history of Croatian football,” Croatian Football Federation (HSN) head Marijan Kustic said.Croatia failed to move into the last 16 of this year’s World Cup, losing 2-1 in a gripping match against Portugal earlier this month.Local media are tipping former national coach Slaven Bilic as Dalic’s likely successor.Bilic, 57, led Croatia from 2006-12. He recorded a higher winning percentage than Dalic, with 42 victories, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches but his best performance in a major tournament was to reach the quarterfinals of the 2008 Euros where Croatia lost on penalties to Turkey.Bilic was a defender who played 44 times for Croatia. He has coached several clubs, including West Ham United, where he played in the mid-1990s.The former defender’s last coaching position was at Saudi Arabia’s Al-Fateh, during the 2023-2024 season.Dalic has repeatedly said he considered his job the “biggest privilege and pleasure a coach can have”.His most notable previous coaching spells came outside Europe — he was in charge of top Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Faisaly and Al-Hilal.In 2014, the former defensive midfielder took over Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he was named coach of the year twice, leading the club to the 2016 Asian Champions League final. …
