Sweden's Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis delivered another slick masterclass in pole vaulting to claim a fourth European pole vault title in Birmingham on Sunday.Duplantis saw off Greek rival Emmanouil Karalis for victory with a championship record of 6.15 metres at Alexander Stadium.Karalis took silver with a clearance of 6.00m, while France's Baptiste Thiery claimed bronze (5.85).’Another medal, I can't complain,’ said Duplantis, the double Olympic champion who has also won three world golds.’It's really amazing. I'm just trying to win.’I'm happy coming out with the win and that was enough for tonight.’I really had a good time this week.’Only three vaulters in the 14-strong field had gone over the 6m mark: Duplantis, Karalis, whose best is 6.17m, and Norway's Sondre Guttormsen, with a personal best of 6.06m.The entry point was 5.55 metres, a height that posed no problem for Duplantis or Karalis.Both vaulters passed as the bar was raised to 5.70m, which four other competitors failed to clear.The bar then went up to 5.85m, Duplantis, Karalis and France's Baptiste Thiery sailing over.There were five more casulaties, Guttormsen and Germany's Bo Kanda Lita Baehre passing after a couple of failures.With the bar at 5.95, the Norwegian and German failed, along with Thiery.Karalis went clear, with Duplantis passing.The bar went up to 6.00m and the US-born Swede failed with his first attempt, as did Karalis, with just the pair left in competition.Duplantis was successful on his second attempt to pile the pressure on the Greek, who delivered at the second time of asking.Both passed at 6.05m, Duplantis clearing 6.10m but Karalis bringing the bar down on his first attempt despite 'Zorba's Dance' booming out over the tannoy.Duplantis turned the screw as Karalis then passed, sailing over 6.15m, a championship record that beat the previous best of 6.10m he set in Rome two years ago.Karalis had nothing to lose so again passed and the bar went up to 6.20m.The Greek had one more attempt to stay in the competition, but just brushed the bar to bring it crashing down to end his evening.There was no tilt at a 16th world record for Duplantis, quick to don his tracksuit and pack up his poles as temperatures dipped.  Source link

Australia’s New South Wales state will start a gun buyback in November, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said yesterday, part of the national response to a shooting spree that killed 15 at a festival in Sydney, the state capital.Albanese’s centre-left government enacted laws in January for the gun buyback, tighter checks for gun licences and a crackdown on hate in the wake of the December 14 gun attack at a Bondi Beach celebration in Australia’s most populous city.The alleged gunmen used powerful firearms that were legally obtained. Australia had a record 4.1mn firearms last year, the government has said, with more than 1.1mn of those in New South Wales, its most populous state.The buyback is to be Australia’s largest since a similar campaign after a 1996 massacre in Tasmania’s Port Arthur, in which a gunman killed 35 people.Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said in a statement the scheme would start on November 2 and that people returning rifles and handguns would be eligible for up to A$1,000 ($700) compensation per firearm.”Australians are quite rightly proud of our gun laws, but the fact is there are more guns in Australia today than there were at the time of dealing with the Port Arthur gun buyback,” Albanese said in televised remarks.New South Wales now limits individuals to possession of four guns under its own reforms prompted by the Bondi Beach attack, which police say was carried out a father and son who police believe were inspired by the militant group Islamic State. The surviving suspect, Naveed Akram, 24, is yet to enter pleas to a raft of charges, including 15 counts of murder.  Source link

More than 700 trucks carrying international humanitarian aid arrived in Afghanistan via Pakistan despite a near-total closure of the land border between the two countries following clashes in October, the UN said Sunday.The convoy was carrying “food and other critical humanitarian items,” Olga Cherevko, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan, told AFP.UN Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan Mo Yahya said on X that “seven hundred and twenty four trucks of humanitarian cargo have crossed into Afghanistan through Torkham, reaching families who need it most”.He also thanked Islamabad and “all those who made it possible to keep the humanitarian lifeline open”.Acute child malnutrition has reached critical levels in Afghanistan this year, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned in early August.Following deadly earthquakes last year, several climate-related disasters this year and the return of millions of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan since 2023, nearly 14mn Afghans are facing acute hunger, according to WFP.The conflict with Pakistan, which has led to the near-total closure of the land border between the two countries since October 2025, has severely disrupted logistical routes for delivering humanitarian aid, WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau told AFP in May.Fortified biscuits destined for Afghan schoolchildren that were arriving from Pakistan earlier this year had to be rerouted through Iran before the war there also disrupted that route.The biscuits eventually reached Afghanistan months later after a land and sea journey passing through countries including Jordan, Turkiye and Azerbaijan.  Source link
