Bahrain denounces attack on UAE tanker in Strait of Hormuz

Bahrain has strongly condemned the Iranian attack on a vessel belonging to Emirati energy company ADNOC while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.In a statement, Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as a blatant violation of international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.The Ministry affirmed Manama’s full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in all measures it takes to protect its sovereignty, security, stability, and interests.It also stressed the need for the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities by taking deterrent measures to ensure the safety and freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, compel Iran to halt its attacks on commercial vessels and oil tankers in the strait, and fully and unconditionally reopen the waterway in a manner that safeguards regional security and stability and ensures global energy security and food supplies.  Source link

Health Ministry in Gaza warns of oxygen depletion in hospitals

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has warned of an unprecedented health crisis resulting from the complete depletion of the operational capacity of the remaining oxygen generation plants in the Strip. This is due to the blockade and severe restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation on the supply of medical supplies to hospitals.In a press statement today, the Ministry clarified that only 12 out of 34 oxygen plants remain operational under extremely complex technical conditions, hindering the ability to meet the basic needs of health facilities and medical service providers. It emphasized that these plants are operating beyond their maximum capacity amid worsening and frequent mechanical breakdowns.The Ministry noted that only four out of 30 oxygen cylinder filling devices remain in service, and they are vulnerable to stopping at any moment due to the inability to perform emergency maintenance resulting from a lack of resources and the ban on the entry of spare parts.The Ministry stressed that oxygen represents the primary lifeline for critical, life-saving departments inside hospitals as well as for patients at home. It called for the immediate opening of crossings to allow the entry of technical equipment and spare parts, and the urgent supply of new oxygen plants to avoid an imminent humanitarian catastrophe.This warning comes at a time when the health system in the Gaza Strip is experiencing a total collapse due to direct targeting, the ongoing blockade, and the exacerbated fuel crisis. This has resulted in the majority of hospitals and health centers going out of service, while medical teams face severe difficulties in saving the lives of the wounded and sick. This parallels the spread of infectious diseases and malnutrition among displaced persons, amid repeated international and UN appeals to pressure for breaking the siege and bringing in emergency aid and medical supplies.  Source link

QFA urges AFC for transparency in positions, statements issued on behalf of member national associations

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has called upon the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to consistently apply the principles of transparency and consultation in a manner that preserves its credibility and strengthens trust among its members.QFA also emphasized the importance of adhering to transparency and institutional governance in the positions and statements issued in the name of the national member associations of the AFC.This came in an official letter addressed by President of the QFA, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani to the Asian Confederation regarding the joint statement issued on August 10 by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf), and the AFC.His Excellency clarified in the letter that the QFA was not consulted, either formally or informally, prior to the issuance of the aforementioned statement. Furthermore, the QFA did not receive any prior notice or draft of the statement, nor was it given the opportunity to comment on or contribute to its content before it was published in the name of the AFC and on behalf of its members. He pointed out that any position presented as a collective stance of the member associations must be based on a clear consultation process preceding its announcement, and a collective consensus should not be assumed without reverting to the members.He also stressed the importance of adhering to proper institutional procedures and standards of governance and transparency, noting that “the issuance of a statement speaking on behalf of the AFC members without consulting them raises questions about the mechanism followed in adopting such positions.”HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani requested a written clarification from the AFC regarding the consultation process that preceded the issuance of the statement -if any- as well as the mechanism for notifying or consulting national member associations, and clarifying the basis upon which the AFC relied in speaking collectively on behalf of its members.The QFA President concluded the letter by emphasizing his keenness to address the matter in a constructive manner that preserves the unity of Asian associations and enhances trust and cooperation among them.It is worth noting that the presidents of six Arab football associations, including the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Kingdom of Morocco, had previously announced their support for Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), affirming their backing for him and his efforts in leading and developing football at the international level.  Source link

Lebanese Prime Minister: Israeli escalation in southern Lebanon undermines stability

Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam said that the Israeli escalation in the city of Nabatieh, the towns of Ansar and Deir Al Zahrani, and neighboring villages is a matter of grave concern that undermines efforts to establish stability in Southern Lebanon.In a statement issued by the Lebanese government on Saturday, Salam underscored that the seven martyrs who fell in the Israeli airstrike on the town of Ansar do not constitute military infrastructure, nor are the children and women killed in the airstrike military targets.The responsibility for dealing with any military structures, should they exist on Lebanese soil, lies exclusively with the Lebanese state through the Lebanese Army and its legitimate institutions, stressed the Lebanese Premier. Their presence does not grant Israel the right to violate Lebanese territory or endanger civilians.Salam added that Israel must halt this escalation and that the security of the Lebanese people and their right to live on their own land are not matters for negotiation or compromise.  Source link

Thousands stranded as ‘unprecedented’ rain kills five in Japan

At least five people died in eastern Japan after “unprecedented” heavy rain that left thousands stranded at Narita airport overnight and snarled up roads and rail services, authorities said yesterday. This month is already the wettest August recorded by the Chiba weather station in 60 years, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) website data shows, with more than 30 centimetres (nearly 12 inches) of rain in 24 hours. The torrential downpours late Thursday triggered landslide warnings and power outages, with forecasters issuing the highest-level heavy rain warning for the Chiba region for the first time. Scientists say human-driven climate change is making extreme weather more frequent, prolonged and intense. In rural Chiba, more than a dozen cars were abandoned on low-lying roads, an AFP journalist saw. At Narita, sleeping bags piled up as passengers slept all over the terminal, with massive lines forming for check-in across the airport. A traveller from the United Kingdom who gave his name as Philip told AFP that he had to go through a nine-hour journey, including a taxi ride, before finally arriving at the airport early yesterday morning. With a sleeping bag in hand, he said he has “just been trying to get some sleep and watching Netflix”. “Just get on with it, really. Nothing else you can do,” he said. At Chiba’s disaster management meeting convened Friday afternoon, an official said five people were confirmed dead. The prefecture had previously said those killed included a man in his 60s or 70s found floating in a flooded road and a 66-year-old woman stuck in her submerged car. Among other fatalities were a man of unknown age who was found collapsed on the street, and a person of undetermined gender and age. Public broadcaster NHK reported as many as eight people may have died. Meanwhile, close to 26,000 households across Chiba prefecture were without power, the disaster management office said. More than 80 homes flooded in cities such as Ichikawa, Kashiwa and Sakura. Additionlly, close to 90 homes saw water seeping in below the floorboards.“I never thought I’d spend the night at the airport, but it is what it is and we are learning,” one stranded air traveller told NHK. “We’re never going to forget this trip,” he said. A JMA official told a news conference on Thursday that this was “shaping up to be an unprecedented level of heavy rain”. Around 6,000 people were stranded overnight at Narita, one of two main airports serving Tokyo, with many trains to and from there cancelled until Friday afternoon, the Chiba disaster office said. Users on social media said that airport staff handed out free water, food and sleeping bags. Hundreds of people were also left stranded in Chiba station due to suspended train services, an AFP journalist saw. Hundreds spent the night in shelters in Chiba, NHK reported, showing cars in water up to the headlights in Kashiwa city. “This happened all of a sudden, so it was a complete surprise. The power is out, so I’m worried whether I can open my business in the next couple of days,” a woman in Chiba’s Ichikawa city told NHK on Thursday. The level-5 warnings of heavy rain were all downgraded to level-4 as of yesterday morning.  Related Story Source link
