Russia exploits Poland-Ukraine dispute to step up disinformation campaign, officials and experts say
Russia has significantly stepped up its online disinformation campaign in Poland, using a dispute between Warsaw and Kyiv over World War Two massacres to inflame tensions between Ukraine and its key ally, Polish officials and researchers say.The messaging, mostly posted on social media accounts in Polish, also focuses on fomenting anger in Poland against refugees, as opinion polls show support for the far-right growing ahead of closely contested parliamentary elections in 2027.The long-running World War Two dispute centres on the Volhynia massacres, in which Poland says Ukrainians killed around 100,000 Poles between 1943 and 1945. Thousands of Ukrainians died in reprisal killings. The dispute intensified after President Volodymyr Zelensky named an army unit after insurgents who perpetrated the massacres, prompting hard-right President Karol Nawrocki to strip his Ukrainian counterpart of a top Polish honour in June.Polish deputy digital minister Pawel Olszewski told Reuters the dispute saw Russian disinformation “explode” across social and official Russian media platforms, including Telegram, in posts later repeated by Polish outlets. An analysis by the state-backed Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) found online anti-Ukrainian content in Polish on X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube increased by more than 250% following Zelensky’s naming of the army unit.Much of the increase across those platforms and others appeared to be artificially generated through bot activity designed to create the impression of rapidly growing anti-Ukrainian sentiment, said PISM’s Filip Bryjka. The messaging focused largely on amplifying the controversy rather than disseminating false information, in what analysts said may be a new Russian disinformation tactic.Moscow denies spreading disinformation and says Western leaders are intentionally exaggerating the threat from Russia for their own political ends.”The Russian Federation does not interfere in the relations between other states,” the Russian embassy in Warsaw said in an emailed statement, adding that accusations about Russia spreading disinformation to undermine support for Ukraine are baseless.Because the underlying facts are often real, analysts say such campaigns are harder to identify and counter than conventional disinformation through fake news.”The event is real, but the interpretation is imposed by an external actor,” said Wojciech Pokora, analyst at Info Ops Poland Foundation, an independent research project.Though Poland remains a staunch ally of Ukraine in its war against Russia, opinion polls show deteriorating support for Ukraine. An IBRiS poll published early last month found that 33.6% of respondents said their attitude towards Ukrainians had worsened following the dispute linked to World War Two.A separate IBRiS survey published last month found support for continued military assistance to Ukraine had fallen to 52% from 78% in 2022.Experts say negative sentiment towards Ukraine cannot be explained solely by foreign influence and also reflects weariness with an estimated 1.8 to 1.9 million Ukrainian migrants, disputes over grain imports and the legacy of the World War Two killings. The flood of disinformation about the dispute has “fallen on fertile ground”, the digital ministry’s Olszewski said.Ukrainians living in Poland have faced mounting hostility in recent months, prompting Prime Minister Donald Tusk to call for an end to xenophobic attacks.Pollsters say policy towards Ukrainians could be a key election theme as polling suggests Tusk’s pro-European government may struggle to retain power next year. No effects from the oil pollution have reached the shores of Masirah Island thus far, while the affected stretch of coastline in the Ras Madrakah area of the Wilayat of Duqm extends for about 12 km, with field operations underway to address it, the Omani Environment Authority said in a statement Saturday.Regarding the oil slick leaking into the sea, the statement added that updated monitoring data and models indicate that it is still moving along its monitored trajectory offshore, southeast of the Wilayat of Masirah, toward the open sea, with its movement continuing to be monitored in line with marine and weather conditions. As such, the Authority is conducting field monitoring and response in lockstep with the relevant entities to assess the developments and take the necessary measures to prevent deleterious effects on the environment and protect the marine and coastal ecosystems.Last Wednesday, the Authority said the fallout from the incident involving the grounded oil tanker Caroline Bezengi near Qabiliyah Island in Dhofar Governorate could potentially affect the Ras Madrakah coastline with oil pollution across a stretch of up to 40 km, while the southern beaches of Masirah Island could be affected across a stretch ranging from 10 to 20 km. Hulking prop Taniela Tupou scored twice as a rampaging Australia swept past Japan 56-17 with a blistering second-half display on Saturday to win three Tests in a row for the first time since 2024.The home side ran in seven tries to the visitors’ three in Townsville for another boost to new coach Les Kiss, who got his reign off to a winning start with a tense 35-32 victory in Osaka last weekend.Josh Nasser, Angus Bell, debutant Massimo De Lutiis, Charlie Cale, Harry Wilson and Brandon Paenga-Amosa also dotted down for the hosts, who went to the break with a 21-17 lead then took full control with 35 unanswered points to complete the job.Ryan Lonergan chipped in with five conversions to leave Japan still searching for a first victory over the Wallabies, now spanning nine Tests dating back to 1975.Wallabies captain Wilson admitted that in the first period “our spark probably wasn’t there.”And we got challenged by Les (Kiss) at half-time. And a team like Japan, if you’re not up for it, they really make you pay.”After a run of prolonged poor form under former coach Joe Schmidt, a return to winning ways is a shot in the arm for Australia, who are desperate to improve and mount a challenge at the World Cup on home soil next year. The back-to-back victories over Eddie Jones’s Japan came on the heels of a 57-10 thrashing of Italy in Schmidt’s last game, which snapped a six-Test losing streak. The last time Australia won three on the trot was back in 2024 when they won four – beating Portugal, Wales twice and Georgia.”I guess we went through the front door (in second half). We were physical, we had a lot more spark,” said Wilson.”We’re getting off the deck quicker, putting ourselves in better positions than probably the first half.” Pumped-up WallabiesThe afternoon match in front of 18,076 fans started at a furious tempo in warm conditions at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium, which will host games at the 2027 World Cup.A pumped-up Wallabies, with eight changes from last week including an almost completely new forward pack, quickly put Japan on the defensive with a seventh-minute converted try.Hooker Nasser stole the honours but it was the culmination of some excellent work by the backs that set Max Jorgensen free to scorch down the touchline. The advantage was short-lived with Japan pulling back five points minutes later when Australian-born Harry Hockings charged down an attempted clearance from Lonergan and dotted down.Australia kept their cool and stretched the lead when Tupou bulldozed over to finish a move that started with a short line-out throw and Lonergan again added the extras.Japan refused to go away and a clever tap and go from scrum-half Naoto Saito after Australia were penalised saw him dart five metres to the line and haul them back to 14-12.The visitors were building into the game nicely and they took the lead on 33 minutes after Dylan Riley brushed off some ineffective tackles to score after some effective ruck play. But it was an unrelenting Australia who went to half-time ahead after the unstoppable Tupou charged over once more on the siren on a penalty advantage. The second period started strongly for Australia with Bell flopping over from close range after a sustained period of pressure, then substitute prop De Lutiis — who became the 1,000th Wallaby – adding another on his debut, finishing a line break. With Japan tiring and the hosts dominating in the breakdown, Cale, Wilson and Paenga-Amosa added to the carnage to ensure an emphatic win.”It was a good, tough, really hard battle,” said Japan skipper Warner Dearns.”Credit to the Wallabies, who came out and gave us one in the second half, which we obviously couldn’t keep up with.” Related Story Source link

The Israeli occupation forces upped the ante Saturday by conducting rampages in different parts of the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. This happened amid the rising settler rampages against Palestinians, which resulted in several Palestinians being injured and others being detained.According to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), a 16-year-old Palestinian was injured after settlers badly beat him near the Ain Shibli checkpoint, southeast of Tubas. In Bethlehem governorate, Israeli soldiers raided Aida and Al-Azza refugee camps north of the city, as well as the towns of Al-Ubeidiya, Dar Salah, Ash-Shawawra and Za’atara to the east, and patrolled their streets, with no arrests reported. In Jenin governorate, Israeli forces detained four Palestinians, including three members of the same family, during a raid on a residential building in the vicinity of the Arab American University. They also detained a young man from the Al-Marah neighborhood in the city of Jenin.Early today, Israeli forces raided the village of Bir Al-Basha, south of Jenin, and stormed and searched multiple homes, smashing their contents and dehumanizing several residents.Israeli forces also detained a man from Shweika, north of Tulkarm, after raiding his home.In the village of Al Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, several Palestinians, including children, suffered suffocation after Israeli soldiers fired toxic gas canisters during their raid on the village, following a settlers’ rampage in the Shaab al-Louz neighborhood northwest of the village and their attempt to raid a number of homes.Israeli forces also detained a young man from Silwan, south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, after assaulting him in the Batn Al-Hawa neighborhood.According to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission (WSRC), Israeli soldiers and settlers carried out 2,256 rampages against Palestinians, their lands and property during July, including 1,458 rampages carried out by Israeli forces and 798 by settlers. The Commission said the assaults were concentrated in the governorates of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, with 260 attacks, Nablus with 247, Jenin with 190, Bethlehem with 185 and Hebron with 170.It noted that these figures reflect an integration of Israeli military force with settler attacks, through the provision of protection and support that allows the rampages to expand and turns their results into continued realities on the ground. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham called yesterday for reflection following the death of a Black academic accused of plagiarism in a case that has prompted criticism of the University of Cambridge and the media.Jason Arday, a sociology professor who frequently appeared in British media, was found dead on Friday aged 41, days after resigning from the university. Police said his death was unexpected but was not being treated as suspicious.”It’s a tragedy on so many levels, but particularly… for everybody who knew Jason, his family obviously, his friends,” Burnham told broadcasters.”It’s not a moment for any rushing to judgement. It’s a moment for reflection, I would say, reflecting on how things came to this.”Arday resigned on August 5 after a former Cambridge researcher accused him of plagiarism in his PhD thesis. He denied the allegation but acknowledged making mistakes.Arday’s accounts of his childhood struggles with autism and his sporting achievements – including a claim to have run 30 marathons in 35 days – have also been challenged. His family said on Friday that he had been the victim of misinformation and harassment.Cambridge University pledged this week, before Arday’s death, to investigate the circumstances of his appointment and his academic work. The case has fuelled debate over the university’s handling of the allegations. Some critics have argued it was so keen to hire a Black academic that it failed to check Arday’s credentials sufficiently and did not respond appropriately when the plagiarism claims emerged.”The unthinking culture warriors who have supported (Arday) unconditionally share responsibility with his racist critics for making life harder for Black academics and dragging UK higher education deeper into the mire,” Paul Gilroy, a University of London sociology professor, was quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper on August 8.Simon Baron-Cohen, a Cambridge professor and supporter of Arday, said Arday had spoken to him hours before his death about his distress over media coverage and criticism on social media.”He was being subjected to relentless scrutiny, including ridicule, discrediting absolutely every detail of his life,” Baron-Cohen told BBC radio yesterday. “And he wasn’t coping with the loss of his career, the loss of his reputation, and he felt he couldn’t go on.”Arday, as a vulnerable person since childhood, deserved safeguarding and support, he said, adding investigations into the case should assign accountability “at lots of levels”.
