Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday announced greater freedoms for small businesses across the country, as the communist government takes steps to liberalize the island’s economy in the face of a crippling US blockade.In a speech broadcast on national television, Diaz-Canel said Cuba would open more sectors to private businesses and streamline the approval process for new ventures.”For non-state forms of management, the list of prohibited activities will be limited so that their scope of operations is as broad as possible,” the president said. “A process is underway… to approve all pending applications in the shortest time possible.”Under pressure from the oil blockade imposed by Washington in January, the Cuban government has unveiled a series of reforms aimed at opening up the economy.Private businesses — which can employ up to 100 people — were authorized in 2021 and have become an increasingly important part of Cuba’s economy. Since February, they have been permitted to import fuel, a sector previously controlled exclusively by the state.As part of the new measures, the government will enable private businesses to invest in the economy on equal terms with foreign investors, after some of them recently left the country amid concerns over US sanctions.Diaz-Canel said the government was also considering scrapping state intermediaries in import and export operations.The president reiterated his commitment to decentralizing the economy and granting greater autonomy to state-owned enterprises, which account for roughly 80 % of economic activity.He also announced an overhaul of the state bureaucracy that would reduce the number of ministries and trim the the state workforce, a plan that requires parliamentary approval in July.Diaz-Canel assured that the new reforms “will soon be discussed and approved very swiftly.”He also sought to project confidence despite the country’s mounting economic difficulties.”The country is not paralyzed; the country is facing this situation intelligently,” the president said, denouncing what he described as a “maximum pressure” policy from Washington.In addition to the oil blockade, the US has imposed a range of sanctions on Cuba.The measures have further aggravated the economic, social and energy crises that have gripped the island for years despite its decades-long struggle against a US embargo dating back to 1962. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory for Ferrari on Sunday at the Barcelona-Catalunya Formula One Grand Prix, ending championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s five-race winning streak. The seven-time world champion finished ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris, while Antonelli was forced to abandon in the final stages because of a technical problem. Hamilton, 41, cut down Antonelli’s title lead to 41 points by triumphing on a Sunday nearly two years after he last won a race. “It’s not over, that’s for sure,” said Hamilton of the championship race. Mercedes polesitter Russell came in 19 seconds behind Hamilton, with Norris completing an all-British podium, the first since the 1968 United States Grand Prix. “You have helped me so much to achieve this dream, I cannot thank you enough,” said Hamilton over team radio. “To the fans, thank you for reminding me who I am. I couldn’t have done this without you.” Russell, pre-season favourite for the championship, arrived in Barcelona bemoaning bad luck for his recent struggles but after team-mate Antonelli edged in front of him late on he had some good fortune to cut the gap on the teenager to 53 points after the Italian abandoned. “Good to be back on the podium and have a clean race, but Ferrari were mighty today so we need to keep pushing,” said Russell. “The last stints were difficult, but it’s good to be back here. The pace today was insane from Lewis, they are coming I think.” With track temperatures up at 51 degrees Celsius, Hamilton opted for a three pit-stop strategy and it worked to perfection, with the third of those fortuitously coming while the virtual safety car was deployed. Ferrari’s heavily upgraded car may well have been fast enough for Hamilton to triumph anyway, as he recorded the 106th victory of his career. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came in fourth, ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Isack Hadjar in the other Red Bull. Russell got off to the perfect start from pole, holding off Hamilton on softs, with the Ferrari driver cutting off Antonelli. Hadjar, who started in position six, was slow off the line and overtaken by eight cars. Charles Leclerc, in the second Ferrari, admitted he was “ashamed” by his crash in qualifying which left him starting in 10th but expertly weaved his way up to sixth, although he was later forced to retire. Early stop Hamilton took an early pit stop on lap 12 to swap his softs for hards, with Mercedes responding on the following lap with hards for Russell. Russell was worried his stop “exposed” him to Antonelli but retook the lead from Hamilton with his teenage team-mate back in third after his own stop to bolt on the hards.With Hamilton 2.3 seconds behind Russell he said “we are on Plan C” over team radio. The seven-time champion pitted for the second time in the 28th lap, indicating a three-stop strategy, with Mercedes deciding not to follow suit because of the threat of 2025 champion Lando Norris, who was on a two-stop plan. Antonelli moved right behind Russell, who was forced to fend off his team-mate. Russell was called in for fresh hards before Antonelli followed suit, allowing Hamilton into the lead, with Ferrari telling the Briton this was the “critical time” for his race. Home favourite Alonso, in what he said was probably his final appearance in Barcelona, was forced to retire because of a suspected battery issue. It brought out a yellow flag with the virtual safety car deployed, offering Hamilton an ideal chance for a cheap stop. That worked brilliantly for Hamilton who emerged from his third stop with fresh rubber 2.6s ahead of Russell with 24 laps remaining. With clean air Hamilton was able to stretch his lead comfortably to triumph in style. Anthropic said Friday it has suspended access to two powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, to comply with a US national security order.Just three days after publicly launching Fable 5, the company said in a blog post that it received a government directive banning all foreign nationals, even ones who work at Anthropic, from accessing Fable 5 and Mythos 5 over national security concerns.”The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance,” it said.The company said it received the letter at 5:21 pm (2121 GMT) Friday.Axios reported that the letter came from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.The US Commerce officials did not immediately respond to a request from AFP.The firm said that the letter did not state what specifically concerned the government. However, the firm’s “understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or ‘jailbreaking'” the Fable 5 model such that it could aid hacking.Fable 5, released Tuesday, is a locked-down version of Mythos 5, a cutting-edge AI model that Anthropic has held back from the public amid concerns that it had unprecedented abilities to identify software vulnerabilites — or holes in code that hackers could exploitMythos 5 — the unrestricted model — has only been released to select companies.The European Union, which gained access to Mythos earlier in June after weeks of talks, said the latest development further underlined “Europe’s need for technological sovereignty”.”We take note of Anthropic’s statement and are assessing,” said Thomas Regnier, a spokesman for the European Commission, which this month unveiled measures to slash the 27-nation bloc’s dependence on America and Asia for key technologies, including AI.Anthropic said it had reviewed the “jailbreaking” method at the center of the speculation and the hacking opportunities it exposed, but it does not believe Fable 5 gives hackers capabilities that are not already available through other public models.The firm said that none of its security testers had found a “universal jailbreak,” or a way to bypass it’s safeguards against helping hackers.”We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people,” the company said.”If this standard was applied across the industry, we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.”Anthropic has been locked in a legal standoff with the Trump administration for refusing to allow its technology to potentially be used for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, leading the Pentagon to cut contracts with the company. FIFA confirmed Sunday that a technical glitch occurred during the Qatar-Switzerland match, held in San Francisco as part of the opening round of Group B in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.FIFA clarified, in a statement published on its FIFA Media platform, that the technical glitch did not affect the operation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during the awarding of the penalty to Switzerland, noting that the standard review procedures were followed fully and meticulously.The statement added that the VAR review did not reveal any offside on the part of the attacking player in the play immediately preceding the penalty, thus confirming the correctness of the referee’s decision.Swiss striker Pierre Mbolo had given his team the lead after successfully converting the penalty in the 17th minute. US President Donald Trump will take part in a G7 working session with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky in France on Tuesday, but no bilateral meeting between the two is scheduled, a senior administration official said.”On Tuesday morning, President Trump will participate in a working session with G7 leaders and President Zelensky of Ukraine,” the official told reporters Saturday on the customary condition of anonymity.The G7 summit will take place in Evian on June 15-17, and Trump is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings on its sidelines with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and India, the official said.Trump is also scheduled to dine at the Versailles palace west of Paris with Macron on Wednesday evening, after the summit wraps up.The dinner is a way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence in a “landmark of Franco-American friendship where the treaty establishing the independence of the US was signed in 1783,” according to Macron’s office.Trump has shifted his attention away from efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February, igniting another conflict that has been under a fragile ceasefire since April.”Obviously, President Zelensky is gonna be at the session that we’re doing.
