 Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Tuesday condemned Israel’s latest strikes on his country, saying they undermine efforts to prevent escalation.Aoun’s criticism came after Israel launched a series of strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, saying it hit Hezbollah and Hamas targets. The attacks began with strikes on four villages where Israel had issued evacuation warnings, though later bombing including a strike in the early hours of Tuesday came without prior notice.In a statement, Aoun said that “Israel’s continued attacks aim to thwart all efforts made locally, regionally and internationally to stop the ongoing Israeli escalation, despite the response shown by Lebanon to these efforts at various levels”. In spite of a year-old ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has carried out frequent strikes on Lebanon, usually saying it is bombing Hezbollah sites and operatives, and occasionally Hamas targets. The strike early on Tuesday targeted Ghazieh, near the southern coastal city of Sidon, destroying a building and damaging its surroundings, causing a fire on site which firefighters deployed to combat, according to an AFP photographer.The latest strikes come with the committee monitoring the ceasefire, which includes the United States, France, Lebanon, Israel and the United Nations, set to meet on Wednesday.  Source link

Eleven students were injured after Israeli occupation forces entered the campus of Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials said.The Palestinian Red Crescent said five students were wounded by live fire, four suffered tear gas inhalation and two were injured in falls. All were taken to hospital.University officials said troops broke through the main gate and fired live rounds, tear gas and stun grenades while thousands of students were on campus. They added that buildings were entered, and student equipment seized, and that the university’s vice-president for academic affairs was briefly detained.The Palestinian Ministry of Education condemned the raid, calling it a violation of international conventions protecting educational institutions. The incident comes amid heightened Israeli military activity across the West Bank. The United Nations voiced deep concern Tuesday over the dramatic US operation in Venezuela, warning that it clearly “undermined a fundamental principle of international law”.”States must not threaten or use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN rights office, told reporters in Geneva. Her comments came after Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were forcibly taken by US commandos in the early hours of Saturday amid airstrikes on the Venezuelan capital backed by warplanes and a heavy naval deployment. Shamdasani dismissed US justifications of the Venezuelan government’s “longstanding and appalling human rights violations” for the raid. “Accountability for human rights violations cannot be achieved by unilateral military intervention in violation of international law,” she insisted. She highlighted that the UN rights office had for a decade consistently reported on “the continued deterioration of the situation in Venezuela”. “We fear that the current instability and further militarisation in the country resulting from the US intervention will only make the situation worse.” Source link

A Palestinian man was martyred on Tuesday by Israeli drone fire east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.Since the ceasefire agreement came into effect, 427 Palestinians were martyred, with at least 1,189 others injured. Medical teams have also recovered 684 bodies from under the rubble.The ceasefire agreement between Hamas and the Israeli entity came into effect on Oct. 10 as part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza. However, the Israeli army has continued to violate the agreement and target Palestinian civilians through airstrikes and attacks on residential areas, resulting in casualties, worsening the suffering of the people, hindering efforts to restore stability in the Strip, and obstructing the return of displaced peopel to their homes.  Source link

Bangladesh’s interim government yesterday banned broadcasts of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), ‌the latest flashpoint in ‌a growing row ‍with neighbouring India. The move follows the Indian cricket board’s decision to have Kolkata Knight Riders drop Bangladesh ‍pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who had signed for the IPL franchise for this season.  Bangladesh have also refused to play their matches of next month’s Twenty20 World Cup in ‌India, demanding those be staged in Sri Lanka, co-host of the 20-team tournament. The unceremonious ‍dumping of a “star player” like ‌Mustafizur from the IPL “defied logic” and had “hurt people”, the country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said in a statement explaining its decision.  The IPL, the world’s richest T20 league, is scheduled from March 26-May 31. The International Cricket Council (ICC) did not reply to ​Reuters e-mails inquiring ‌whether it would agree to Bangladesh’s demand of playing their ‍World Cup matches in Sri Lanka.  Tensions have risen in recent weeks between India and Bangladesh.  Hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi last month ​after a Hindu factory worker was beaten and set on fire in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district over allegations he insulted the Prophet Muhammad.  Following the protests, the Indian board asked Knight Riders to drop Mustafizur.  Source link

 At least 14 people have died in flash floods after being swept away by torrential rains in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, while rescue authorities continue searching for missing persons. Spokesperson for the local rescue agency Nuriadin Gumeleng said the search continues for four people still missing, adding that 18 people have been injured so far. Gumeleng told reporters that the agency is continuing to gather information from local residents in case more people are missing, noting that heavy rains over the past two days caused flash floods on Siau Island in the northeast of the country. Meanwhile, local authorities have evacuated at least 444 people to shelters following the floods. The local weather agency had predicted that the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua would experience the peak of their rainy season during January and February, increasing the risk of flooding. Last November, floods and landslides killed more than 1,000 people in Sumatra, while hundreds are still missing.  Source link
