Taiwan opposition leader makes rare visit to China

Taiwan's main opposition leader landed in China Tuesday for a rare visit aimed at building cross-strait ‘peace’, as the Taipei government warned Beijing would seek to stop US arms sales to the democratic island.  Kuomintang (KMT) chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, who is the party's first leader to visit China in a decade, has insisted on meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping before she visits the US — Taiwan's main security backer.  The KMT supports closer relations with China, which claims Taiwan is part of its territory and has threatened to use force to seize it. But Cheng, whose unexpected rise to the top of the KMT drew a congratulatory message from Xi in October, has been accused by critics, including inside the party, of being too pro-China.  The KMT leader landed at a Shanghai airport Tuesday, where she was presented with a bouquet of flowers before being driven away in a convoy, live video from Taiwanese media showed. Cheng then travelled to the eastern city of Nanjing, where Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said she thanked Xi and China for the warm reception.  She is expected to visit the memorial of Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen in the city today. Cheng will be in China for six days, also visiting Beijing where she hopes to meet Xi. Cheng told journalists before her trip that Taiwan ‘must do everything in our power to prevent war from breaking out’. ‘To preserve peace is to preserve Taiwan,’ Cheng told a news conference at the KMT headquarters in Taipei. ‘Goodwill must be built up and mutual trust needs to be expanded, step by step, by both sides.’  Ahead of the visit, Taiwan's top China policy body warned Beijing would attempt to ‘cut off Taiwan's military purchases from the US and co-operation with other countries’, which the KMT dismissed. ‘This trip is entirely for cross-strait peace and stability, so it has nothing to do with arms procurement or other issues,’ Cheng said last week. Taiwanese lawmakers have been at loggerheads over the government's plan to spend NT$1.25tn ($39bn) on defence, which has been stalled for months in the opposition-controlled parliament.  While KMT party members regularly fly to China for exchanges with officials, its last leader to visit was Hung Hsiu-chu in 2016. — US pressure — China severed high-level contact with Taiwan that year after Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party won the presidency and rejected Beijing's claims to the island.  Cross-strait relations have worsened since then, with China ramping up military pressure with near daily deployments of fighter jets and warships near Taiwan and regular large-scale military drills. Tsai's successor Lai Ching-te, who was elected in 2024 and whom Beijing brands a separatist, warned as Cheng arrived in Nanjing that China is the ‘biggest’ threat to Taiwan's democracy.  Cheng's trip comes a month before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing for a summit with Xi. The US has been piling pressure on Taiwanese opposition lawmakers to back a proposal for defence purchases, including US weapons, to deter a potential Chinese attack.  Cheng has railed against the government's proposal, insisting ‘Taiwan isn't an ATM’ and instead backed a KMT plan to allocate NT$380bn for US weapons with the option for more acquisitions. But she faces deepening divisions inside her party over how to counter China's military threats, with more moderate senior figures in the KMT pushing for a much higher budget.  While the US has long been ambiguous about its willingness to defend Taiwan, Washington remains Taipei's biggest arms supplier, which angers Beijing. The US approved the sale of $11bn worth of arms to Taiwan in December. More deals are in the pipeline, but there have been doubts about whether they would proceed after Xi warned Trump against sending weapons to Taiwan. Cheng has insisted she supports Taiwan having a strong defence, but said the island does not have to choose between Beijing and Washington.   Source link

Vanderveen wins CSI5* Grand Prix of QEF Cup as Doha Equestrian Tour 2026 concludes

Kristen Vanderveen made it a memorable first in Doha for herself and her horses Sunday as she topped the CSI5* Grand Prix – Jump-Off – 1.60m concluding class of the Qatar Equestrian Federation Cup as the Doha Equestrian Tour 2026 came to a spectacular conclusion at Al Shaqab.Vanderveen displayed sizzling form as the American rider claimed wins in three top classes on the final day of the four-day event. Vanderveen topped a five-rider jump-off astride darkbay gelding Bull Run’s Jireh with a clear round in 44.07secs to finish ahead of Qatari Bassem Mohammed, who was second on chestnut gelding Wathnan Issem in 44.13secs. The third podium spot was claimed by Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Alsharbatly, who rode bay stallion Skorphults Baloutendro and finished in 43.52secs picking four faults.Vanderveen received €97,500 besides the trophy for her win. Bassem Mohammed won €65,000 and Alsharbatly €48,750.Vanderveen said she felt lucky today. “I got a bit lucky in the first round today. I am very happy with my results and to have finished as a champion in the concluding event. It is very special for me. “It was my first Tour here in Doha and I have been delighted to be here. It was an amazing opportunity for the horses to ride on the vast expanse. Outside the event, I also got a chance to the beautiful culture here. It has been quite special and I would surely love coming back here,” she said.Britain’s Scott Brash topped the overall standings for the Doha Finals in the four- and five-star classes with a total of 199 points. He was followed by Abdullah Al Sharbatly (197 points), and Brit Harry Charles (144 points).In overall standings for the Star category, Qatari rider Saad Ahmed al-Saad topped the table with 90 points, followed by his compatriot Khalid Jassim al-Suwaidi with 89 points, and Qatari rider Hussein Saeed Haidan in third place with 69 points.The top finishers were crowned by Rashid Nasser Saree al-Kaabi, a member of the Doha Equestrian Tour 2026 Organizing Committee and a member of the Al Shaqab Board of Directors, and Bader bin Mohammed al-Darwish, President of the Qatar Equestrian Federation and a member of the Doha Equestrian Tour Organizing Committee.Assistant Tournament Director, Sheikh Talal bin Khaled al-Thani, congratulated the winners. “We had some very impressive competitions in all classes of showjumping, dressage and para dressage. Congratulations to all the winners,” he said. And added: “Special thanks to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, Qatar Olympic Committee, for his unwavering support in the success of the tour. The next edition of the Doha Tour will start on December 30.”The final day of the championship featured five rounds, beginning with the three-star 135cm class which was also bagged by Vanderveen with a time of 58.67 seconds on Bull Run’s Lioness. Qatari rider Saeed Hamad Jumaa was second in 63.86 seconds astride Wathnan Diesel, while his compatriot, Mohammed Yousef al-Jaber, finished third in 64.56 seconds riding Christa 27.The winners were crowned by. Mohammed al-Suwaidi, the stable manager for the championship.The CSI3* – Table C – 1.40m class was clinched by Egyptian Zayed Ali claimed first place finishing in 64.97 seconds on Quirani van de Maltahoeve. Saudi rider Khalid al-Hadi was second in 65 seconds on Capoen, while Qatari rider Sultan Salem al-Nuaimi finished third with a time of 68.3 seconds on his horse Gannan de La Luce.The winners were honored by Engineer Lahdan al-Buainain, the tournament’s venue manager.Qatar’s Mohammed Khalifa al-Baker won the CSI3* Grand Prix – Jump Off – 1.50m class clocking 44.86 seconds astride Dukhan 3 Abdullah Alsharbatly was second in 45.73 seconds on Quisandro, while Qatari Hussein Saeed Haidan finished third in 48.62 seconds on Icaterina. |The winners were honoured by Bader bin Mohammed al-Darwish, President of the Qatar Equestrian Federation and member of the Doha Equestrian Tour Organizing Committee.The CSI5* – Faults & Time – 1.50m was also claimed by Vanderveen who clocked the best 73.89 seconds on Starbucks. Egyptian Zein Shady Samir was second with a time of 81.27 seconds on Le Boss, and Qatari Bassem Mohammed ended in third in 73.48 seconds on Wathnan Zodiak.The winners were crowned by Mohammed al-Suwaidi, the tournament’s stable manager.Khalifa al-Attiyah, Executive Director of the Doha Equestrian Tour, stated: “With the conclusion of the Doha Equestrian Tour 2026, Qatar has successfully translated its strategic vision into tangible reality through a comprehensive season that constituted one of the most prominent events on the international equestrian calendar, in terms of the level of organization, the scale of participation, and the diversity of the competitions.”Mohammed Jaber al-Khayarin, Deputy Director of the Doha Equestrian Tour, said the exceptional season was a significant step in establishing Qatar’s position as a leading global center for equestrian sports. “Doha successfully delivered a comprehensive season spanning several months, attracting the world’s elite riders to a professional organizational environment and world-class infrastructure at Al Shaqab.” he said.  Related Story Source link

Police SC beat Al Arabi to clinch Qatar Volleyball Cup

Police SC were crowned champions of the Qatar Volleyball Cup after defeating Al Arabi 3-1 in the final, securing their third title in the competition’s history. First Vice-President of the Qatar Olympic Committee Mohammed bin Yousef al-Mana, alongside Qatar Volleyball Association President Ali Ghanim al-Kuwari and Vice President of the Qatar Police Sports Federation, Col. Ahmed bin Hamad Al-Thani, presented the trophy, gold medals, and a prize of QR600,000 to the champions. Al Arabi, who finished runners-up, received silver medals and QR400,000. Police SC made a strong start, claiming the opening set (25-18) with an impressive display that combined powerful attacking play and solid blocking at the net. They maintained their momentum in the second set, overcoming Al Arabi’s attempts to respond and securing it (25-21). Al Arabi bounced back in the third set, showing improved organization and effective blocking to reduce their opponents’ scoring opportunities, taking the set (25-21). However, Police SC regained control in the fourth set, delivering a composed performance to close out the match (25-21) and seal the title. Draw held for Amir Cup The draw for the quarter-finals of the Amir Cup Volleyball Championship for the 2025–2026 season was held at the Qatar Olympic Committee headquarters yesterday. The draw produced evenly balanced matchups. Al Rayyan will face Qatar SC, while Al Wakrah take on Al Ahli. Police SC meet Al Sadd, and Al Arabi will play Al Gharafa. Matches will be held from April 8 to 15 at the Aspire Ladies Sports Hall under a knockout format. FIDE praises Qatar’s successful hosting of World Championships

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) praised Qatar’s successful hosting of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships during its recent meetings held in Cyprus on the sidelines of the Candidates Championship. The Candidates Championship features eight players competing in a double round-robin format, with the winner earning the right to challenge reigning world champion. The meetings in Cyprus were attended by Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, in his capacity as Director of International Relations for FIDE. The FIDE Council commended the strong organisation and success of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships for men and women, which were hosted by Qatar last December. During the meetings, several important decisions were taken to support the continued growth of chess worldwide. Among the most notable was the decision to award hosting rights for the World Chess Olympiad to Africa in 2032 – marking the first time the continent will stage the prestigious global event. The host nation will be announced at a later stage. The 2034 edition of the Olympiad will be held in the Americas, which last hosted the tournament in 1978 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Earlier this year, FIDE appointed al-Mudahka to oversee the next edition of the World Chess Olympiad, scheduled to take place in September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The appointment reflects recognition of al-Mudahka’s continued contributions to the development of chess internationally, as well as the successful organisation of the World Championship hosted by Qatar last December, which received widespread praise from FIDE officials and participants. Al-Mudahka, who made the ceremonial first move during the seventh round of the Candidates Championship, praised the efforts of FIDE under the leadership of President Arkady Dvorkovich in advancing the game at all levels, developing competitions, and expanding chess participation in developing countries. He noted that the federation’s upcoming strategy aims to continue strengthening chess development across Asia, adding that Uzbekistan’s hosting of the Olympiad reflects the region’s growing role in supporting the global chess movement. Al-Mudahka also confirmed that the Qatar national team will participate in the Olympiad, describing the event as an important platform for raising players’ standards and gaining valuable international experience. He concluded by reaffirming the Qatar Chess Federation’s commitment to supporting the development of chess locally in cooperation with FIDE, and to continuing efforts to promote and expand the game in Qatar, across Asia, and worldwide. Turkiye’s Erdogan accuses Israel of undermining peace initiatives

 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday accused Israel of undermining all efforts to halt the war in the Middle East, but said Ankara would continue to pursue any opportunity to advance a ceasefire. “The Israeli government has continued to undermine all initiatives aimed at ending the war,” Erdogan said following a weekly cabinet meeting in the Turkish capital. “If there is even the slightest chance to silence the weapons and open space for negotiations, we are making sincere efforts to seize it,” he added. “Our hope is that this unlawful, senseless, illegitimate, and extremely costly war for all humanity will come to an end as soon as possible.”Erdogan also said Turkiye has stepped up diplomatic contacts to achieve a ceasefire. “As the war drags on, we have warned that the fire could spread to other countries. As we leave behind the 38th day of the conflict, we unfortunately continue to carry the same concerns for our region,” he said. “In the face of increasing risks, I, as president, on one hand, and our ministers on the other, are accelerating our diplomatic contacts,” he added. Turkiye has attempted to mediate an end to the hostilities, notably through negotiations conducted with Pakistan and Egypt. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan yesterday met with the US ambassador to Turkiye, Tom Barrack, who called the meeting “productive”. “Turkiye’s partnership continues to be vital as we work toward @POTUS’s (Trump’s) vision for a more secure region,” the ambassador said on X, using Turkiye’s official name. Fidan also spoke on the phone with his Iranian counterpart to discuss “the course of war and other developments”, a Turkish diplomatic source said.  Source link
