Qatar to play friendly against Ireland in May

Qatar will face Ireland in an international friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on May 28 as part of Al Annabi’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico in June and July. Qatar have been drawn in Group B alongside Canada, Switzerland and one European playoff winner. In the latest FIFA rankings released in January, Qatar are ranked 56th, while Ireland sit 59th. The two sides have met twice before during the European qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Their first meeting in Debrecen, Hungary, in March 2021 ended in a 1-1 draw, while the return fixture in Dublin saw Ireland claim a 4-0 victory. As part of their ongoing preparations, Al Annabi will also play friendlies against Argentina and Serbia during an international Qatar Football Festival in Doha from March 26 to 31, which will feature six World Cup-qualified teams. The Aviva Stadium, a multi-purpose venue with a capacity of 51,700, is the official home of the Ireland national team. Iran security chief meets Oman ruler after US talks

Iran’s Secretary of the National Security Council, Ali Larijani meets with Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, in Muscat, Tuesday. Iran’s top security official met the Sultan of Oman in Muscat Tuesday, days after a first round of talks there between officials from Washington and Tehran last Friday. Ali Larijani, who heads the Supreme National Security Council, and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq “discussed the latest developments in the Iranian-American negotiations”, the official Oman News Agency said. Larijani also met Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who mediated Friday’s indirect talks between US and Iranian officials, according to photos shared on Larijani’s official Telegram channel. Larijani and Sultan Haitham also explored “ways to reach a balanced and just agreement between the two sides, and emphasised the importance of returning to the table of dialogue and negotiation”. While in Muscat, Larijani warned against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intervening in the talks, according to a post on X. He urged the US to “remain alert” to what he described as Israel’s destructive role ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to Washington, it said. During his trip to Muscat, Larijani also met Mohammed Abdulsalam, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi fighters. Larijani will head to Qatar next, according to Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei. The trip comes after Iran and the US resumed negotiations in Oman on Friday for the first time since the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June, which was briefly joined by the US military.  Related Story Source link

Qatar Chess Association marks National Sport Day with “I Chose Sport” activities

Under the slogan “I Chose Sport,” the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) organized a comprehensive series of activities and events to celebrate the country’s National Sport Day. The events were held in accordance with Emiri Decree No. (80) of 2011, which designates the second Tuesday of February each year as a national day for sport. In a bid to ensure broad community engagement, QCA strategically distributed its activities across several key locations, including Museum Park, the Student Building at Qatar Foundation, Oxygen Park, Aspire Park, Old Doha Port, and Stadium 974. These events were organized in close cooperation with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Police Sports Federation, the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, and Aspire Academy. The day witnessed significant participation from federation officials, players, and the general public, continuing an annual tradition aimed at integrating sport into daily life. Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of QCA, praised the “exceptional atmosphere” that characterized the day. He noted that the large turnout reflected widespread public engagement with the holiday’s objectives. “The Qatar Chess Association, in cooperation with state institutions, ensured a geographical distribution of events to cover different areas across the country,” al-Mudahka said. “This strategy aimed to encourage broad participation from all members of society and to further promote chess culture.” Al-Mudahka emphasized that this year’s slogan, “I Chose Sport,” underscores the necessity of regular physical activity and carries implications that go beyond a single day of celebration. He further affirmed the Federation’s commitment to organizing tournaments throughout the year for all age groups. Echoing these sentiments, Hamad al-Tamimi, Executive Director of QCAn, highlighted the impact of the events on the next generation. “These events contribute effectively to spreading the game of chess and expanding the base of practitioners within Qatari society, especially among the youth,” al-Tamimi said. He added that the tournaments were distinctive, featuring confrontations “full of strength and challenge” between participating players. QCA expressed its gratitude to all partner institutions for their ongoing support in making the National Sport Day activities a success.
