Trump ties Saudi nuclear deal to joining Abraham Accords

US President Donald Trump has thrown a fresh hurdle into Washington’s newly announced civilian nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, saying the agreement now hinges on Riyadh recognising Israel and joining the Abraham Accords. The move injects immediate uncertainty into a pact that only a day earlier had been presented as a major diplomatic and commercial breakthrough. Trump said on Truth Social that the deal “will be approved” but is “totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords,” adding that there would be “no enrichment of material.” The White House said the president had long raised the issue with Saudi officials and insisted the kingdom was aware of the condition, even though it was not included in Wednesday’s announcement. Saudi Arabia has repeatedly said it will not normalise ties with Israel without a pathway to Palestinian statehood, a position that has only hardened since the Gaza war. That stance puts the latest US demand on a collision course with Riyadh’s long-held red line and could complicate one of Trump’s key Middle East goals. The nuclear agreement had been described as a strategic win for Saudi Arabia and a potentially lucrative opportunity for US companies. It also came as the Trump administration has intensified pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions, making the Saudi deal politically and regionally sensitive from the outset. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the condition, saying Saudi recognition would mark a “historic leap” for peace in the Middle East. But analysts warned that trying to force normalisation could backfire, especially given how consistently Riyadh has tied the issue to Palestinian statehood. The kingdom, they noted, is unlikely to reverse course simply because Washington wants a diplomatic victory. The deal itself remains subject to congressional review, with lawmakers given 90 session days to examine it. According to the Reuters account, the agreement would allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium and build reactors using US technology, while a two-year feasibility study would assess the enrichment component. That aspect has already drawn scrutiny from critics who fear it could one day open a pathway to weapons capability. US officials sought to calm those concerns, stressing that any civil nuclear arrangement would contain safeguards to prevent diversion toward military use. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the deal would meet the highest standards of safety and nonproliferation, while the White House emphasised that the president remains the final dealmaker. The International Atomic Energy Agency said it was awaiting a request from Washington and Riyadh to put verification measures in place. Until those details are settled, and until the normalisation question is resolved, the deal that was billed as a breakthrough now looks more like a test of whether the US can align nuclear cooperation, regional diplomacy and nonproliferation in one package. The bigger question is whether Trump’s latest condition creates leverage or merely raises the odds of deadlock. For now, Saudi Arabia’s nuclear ambitions, Israel’s diplomatic agenda and Washington’s regional strategy are all locked in the same room, and none of them appears ready to move first.  Related Story Source link

Qatar, seven Arab and Islamic countries condemn Israeli escalation in Al Aqsa Mosque

The Foreign Ministers of the State of Qatar, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Republic of Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Turkiye, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli escalation at Al Aqsa Mosque / Al Haram Al Sharif, particularly the continued mass settlers’ incursions led by extremist Israeli ministers, into Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif under the protection of the Israeli forces, the raising of the Israeli flag within its courtyards, the erection by Israeli police of two tents, and all other inflammatory acts. They stressed that these provocative and unacceptable actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law, the relevant United Nations resolutions, and the historical and legal status quo at the holy sites in occupied East Jerusalem. The Ministers further deplored and condemned in the strongest terms the illegal and extremist acts of incitement, incursions, mobilisation calls and violence by Israeli extremist ministers and groups. The Ministers warned that these provocative actions fuel hatred and extremism, and obstruct efforts to advance a just and lasting peace on the basis of the two-State solution. They stressed that the restrictions on access to the Old City of Jerusalem and its places of worship, coupled with discriminatory and arbitrary access restrictions to the other places of worship in the Old City constitute a flagrant violation of international law, including international humanitarian law, and an unlawful attempt to alter the historical and legal status quo.They stressed that Israel has no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or its Islamic and Christian holy sites. The Foreign Ministers further condemned the continued and systematic violations and measures carried out by Israel, the occupying Power, aimed at altering the historical, legal, and demographic character of occupied East Jerusalem and undermining the sanctity and status of its Islamic and Christian holy sites. They reaffirmed their categorical rejection of any attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites, and stressed its preservation while recognising the special role of the historical Hashemite custodianship in this regard. The Ministers reiterated that the entire area of Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al Haram Sharif, which amounts to 144 dunams, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, is the legal entity with exclusive jurisdiction to administer the affairs of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif and to regulate entry thereto. The Ministers called on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately remove access restrictions to the Old City of Jerusalem, and refrain from obstructing Muslim worshippers’ access to the Mosque. They also called on the international community to adopt a firm position that compels Israel to halt its ongoing violations and illegal practices against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, as well as its violations of the sanctity of these holy places. GCC States and Jordan unite in condemning Iranian aggression against their territories

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and Jordan jointly condemned the Iranian aggression against their territories, reaffirming a unified position based on resolutions adopted by the GCC Ministerial Council, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the League of Arab States, international law, and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026). In a joint statement, the seven countries said Iranian attacks on their territories, citizens, and civilian infrastructure have continued since Feb. 28, 2026, including after the signing of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding on Jun. 17, 2026. They said the attacks have intensified against Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, targeting energy facilities, desalination plants, ports, airports, and other civilian infrastructure. The statement said the attacks constitute violations of the UN Charter, international law, international humanitarian law, Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), and the commitments Iran undertook under the Memorandum of Understanding, adding that they pose a threat to international peace and security. The seven countries reaffirmed their inherent right to individual and collective self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and their right to take all necessary legal measures to protect their sovereignty, territory, citizens, commercial vessels, and critical infrastructure against continued attacks. They also welcomed the Iraqi Prime Minister’s decision to restrict the possession of weapons to the state by Sep. 30, 2026, expressing support for the measures taken by the Iraqi government to prevent Iranian-backed factions, militias, and armed groups from carrying out further attacks against countries in the region. The statement called on the UN Security Council to adopt an urgent resolution demanding an immediate end to the Iranian attacks, recognise the right of affected states to self-defense, and consider further measures should the attacks continue. The seven countries also praised the readiness and professionalism of their armed forces in protecting their sovereignty, security, stability, and civilian population. They further commended the resilience and unity shown by their citizens in the face of the attacks. The statement reaffirmed the countries’ commitment to ensuring freedom and safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab El Mandeb Strait, preserving regional security and stability, and working with regional countries and the International Maritime Organisation to establish permanent arrangements consistent with international law, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, respect for state sovereignty, and the principles of good neighborliness. The statement concluded by reaffirming the countries’ full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for the measures it is taking to safeguard its sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity. It also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts led by Saudi Arabia and Oman to reach a comprehensive and lasting political solution to the crisis in Yemen, as well as for Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian and development assistance to Yemen.  Related Story Source link
