Saudi Arabia and the United States have signed the Agreement for Cooperation on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, according to a press release issued by the Saudi Ministry of Energy on July 22. The agreement builds on the historic strategic partnership between the two countries and follows an announcement made during Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the United States in November last year on the conclusion of bilateral negotiations. Signed by Saudi Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, the agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and facilitate the exchange of expertise, knowledge and technologies. The cooperation will be conducted in accordance with the highest international standards of nuclear safety, nuclear security and non-proliferation. It also reflects the two countries’ shared vision of expanding cooperation in energy and future technologies while supporting sustainable development. The agreement further builds on longstanding Saudi-US energy cooperation by supporting efforts to diversify energy sources, advance cutting-edge technologies and expand cooperation and investment opportunities serving the mutual interests of both countries. Britain’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham, said yesterday he would cut the price of single bus tickets by up to a third as part of early measures to try to ease cost-of-living pressures.Burnham wants to move quickly to show people he can improve their lives, after becoming Britain’s seventh prime minister in 10 years in an unprecedented bout of political instability while living standards flatlined. On Monday, he said his government would remove a tax from domestic electricity bills from October 1 to save around £45 a year, and the move to cap bus fares at £2 from a previous £3 will come into force in January.While the sums may be small, the announcements on the first two days of Burnham’s tenure are designed to show his intent to give people what he calls more “breathing space” in life. But the government faces financial constraints in making bigger moves, leading to speculation that Burnham might increase either taxes or borrowing at a fiscal event later in the year.Asked if he was planning to increase taxes, Burnham said, “we’ll take decisions on tax at the budget,” adding his initial moves were about reprioritising where possible to focus on issues like the cost of living. “I’ve made a number of moves that will deal with some of these challenges, although I appreciate there’s a lot more to do,” he told reporters.Burnham, a 56-year-old former Greater Manchester mayor, said that among the tax issues he was looking at was the tax-free personal allowance, which has been frozen since 2021 and has dragged more people into paying tax as earnings increase. Any change could cost billions and markets are closely watching how Burnham, who has vowed to stick to fiscal discipline, would fund any support.“We’ll have to look at it at the budget alongside everything else,” Burnham said, adding there was “no commitment (and) no unfunded promise,” at this stage to increase the allowance. The government said the bus price cap would cost more than £500mn, with £100mn coming from the existing transport budget and £400mn from the Energy Security and Net Zero Department, by switching grants for international climate projects to loans. The fare cap will apply outside London, which has a separate regulated fare system.  Source link

The US House of Representatives passed the National Defence Authorization Act for fiscal year 2027, allocating a record $1.15 trillion budget for the US military, by a vote of 216 to 212.All but seven Republicans voted for the bill, while all but six Democrats voted against it.The Legislation sparked sharp divisions within Congress, with Democrats criticizing the scale of defense spending amid cuts to social programs. They also criticized the continuation of US military operations against Iran, which the Pentagon says have cost $37.5 billion to date.Republicans, on the other hand, argued that the funding is essential to support the armed forces, finance the development of defence systems, procure military equipment, and improve the conditions of service members through pay increases of up to seven percent and the construction of barracks and housing for their families.The bill now proceed to the Senate for further legislative consideration before being sent to President Donald Trump for his signature. This helps referees maintain good positioning, movement, anticipation, and make appropriate decisions during matches. We have been conducting daily analysis sessions for all referees, whether at our headquarters in Miami or via video conference for referees in other cities. Technical instructors and performance analysts, in collaboration with the technology team, have prepared key refereeing clips to analyze referee performance, focusing on positive aspects and opportunities for improvement, which will contribute to raising the level of performance in subsequent matches. How do you view the Qatari refereeing team’s participation at the World Cup?The Qatari team that participated in the tournament, consisting of Abdulrahman al-Jassim, Saud Ahmed, Talib Salem, and Khamis al-Marri, has proven over the past years that it is among the best refereeing teams and deserves to be present in the biggest international tournaments. Being at the World Cup is no longer new for Qatari referees; it has become a natural achievement resulting from the great work done by the referees themselves, the Referees Committee, and the Qatar Football Association.I am proud of what the Qatari referees presented. They performed admirably, managed their matches with high efficiency, and lived up to their responsibilities. This is a continuation of their performance in previous World Cups, the Asian Cup, and other international tournaments. Khamis al-Marri was in the officiating team for the final. How do you see that?Khamis al-Marri’s presence on the officiating team for the final match is a culmination of the entire Qatari refereeing system, and he deserves this selection after the outstanding level he demonstrated throughout the tournament. How would you describe the development of the Qatari refereeing system in recent years?The Qatari refereeing has witnessed a qualitative leap at all levels. We have continuous training programs, internal and external training camps, technical lectures, the use of the latest technologies, and the assistance of international experts, in addition to a precise evaluation system after each match. Ultimately, the success achieved is the fruit of integrated teamwork, in which each individual performs their role to the fullest, which has contributed to building a generation of referees capable of competing locally, regionally, and globally. What is the secret to continued success of Qatari referees?Success doesn’t come by chance; it’s the result of daily work, discipline, and a belief in the importance of learning and never resting on any achievement. Qatari referees operate according to the highest professional standards, and this is what has brought them to the position they deserve today.
