Raghad al-Fara is struggling to rebuild her teenage life in Athens, not least because she now moves around with crutches because of injuries suffered in the Gaza war.Evacuated from the besieged Palestinian territory in February she now lives in a shelter for refugee women. “I never thought I would survive, let alone set foot on European soil,” the 15-year-old said.Raghad is one of 10 Gazan minors suffering from “complex” orthopaedic and psychological injuries, according to Heracles Moskoff, secretary general for vulnerable persons at the migration ministry.Injured during an Israeli bombing, she was evacuated with her mother Shadia and her younger sister Argwan.    Palestinian refugees Raghad al-Fara, 15 (left) and her mother Shadia al-Fara, 44 (centre), who now live in Athens, stand outside a refugee shelter.   The rest of the family — three other children and the father — remain in Gaza.In total, 26 Palestinians arrived in Athens at the end of February, according to the Greek foreign ministry.”When we learned that Greece agreed to host us, it was a relief,” said Shadia al-Fara, the teenager’s mother.Sara al-Sweirki, 20, who now also lives in Athens, is determined to “not just be a survivor.””I want to be a girl my age like others, learn guitar and piano, and study,” stressed the young woman, who left Gaza in September with her mother and brother.Accepted by the private Deree American College of Greece, al-Sweirki will begin her studies in January.She chose psychology “to help others overcome their traumas,” she said.Raghad could use such expertise. Her mother noted that the teenager still has not received psychological support “even though she wet the bed for months” due to the severe shock she experienced.Raghad was injured in a July 2024 Israeli bombing in the Gaza city of Khan Younis that caused hundreds of casualties.Her right leg and back were crushed under the rubble of a building.”For two months, my daughter was on a respirator and for seven months, bedridden, unable to move,” al-Fara recalled painfully.Upon her arrival in Greece, Raghad was treated by an orthopedist and a physiotherapist at a children’s hospital.But she had to wait months for a support belt, and her mother, a former hairdresser, had to find orthopedic shoes on her own.”Greece took responsibility for us but then abandoned us,” Raghad’s mother said, stating that the Greek state provides no financial assistance.Even though the Palestinian community in Athens has asked the government to host more injured Gazans, there is “no political will” by the conservative Greek government, said Palestinian official Latif Darwesh.”The current government has forgotten its historic friendship with the Palestinian people,” Darwesh said.Many Palestinian students found refuge in Greece in the 1980s, under the socialist administration of Andreas Papandreou, who cultivated close relations with late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.Israel’s tactics used against Gaza since the Hamas storming of Israel in October 2023 set off the war, has heightened solidarity towards Palestinians among the Greek population.The government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has yet to recognise a Palestinian state, even though 74% of Greeks would support such a move, according to a recent study by aboutpeople, a Greek social research group.Sara al-Sweirki does not know if she will stay in Athens “forever,” though she acknowledges that “the future in Gaza remains very uncertain.”A truce agreement that came into effect on October 10 “does not mean reconstruction,” said Shadia al-Fara, who has enrolled her daughters in Greek school.”We cannot return to live under tents with the fear of bombings resuming!” said the mother.”My three other children in Gaza ask me to get them out of this hell” but al-Fara says she feels “powerless” to help them.Sara al-Sweirki, meanwhile, looks to the future.”My dream was interrupted” after the October 2023 incident. “But now I am more determined than ever to pursue my goal (of studying),” she said.  Source…

Iran said yesterday it would now send representatives to the World Cup finals draw in Washington in a complete reversal of an earlier decision to boycott the event over visa issues.”Amir Ghalenoei, head coach of Iran’s national team, will participate in the World Cup draw ceremony as the technical representative of the national football team with one or two other people,” the Iranian Football Federation spokesperson told state television.On Friday, the federation’s spokesperson said that they had informed FIFA about the Iranian delegation not participating in the ceremony as the United States refused to grant visa to several members of the delegation.Iranian sports website Varzesh 3 earlier reported that one of those who didn’t receive the visa was Mehdi Taj, the president of the federation.”We have told the head of FIFA mister (Gianni) Infantino, that it is purely a political position and that FIFA must tell them (the US) to desist from this behaviour,” Taj said then.According to Varzesh 3, four members of the delegation including Ghalenoei had been granted visas for the draw on December 5.Iran qualified for the sport’s quadrennial showpiece in March, securing a fourth successive appearance at World Cup finals and a seventh in all.They have yet to progress to the knockout stages but there was unconfined joy when, at the 1998 finals in France, Iran beat the USA 2-1 in their group match.The USA avenged that by edging Iran 1-0 in the 2022 edition in Qatar.The United States – which is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico – and Iran have been at loggerheads for over four decades.They had, though, been holding high-level nuclear talks that had begun in April, during which the two sides were at odds over Iran’s right to enrich uranium — which Tehran defends as “inalienable”.However, the negotiations ended when in mid-June, Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran, triggering a 12-day war that Washington briefly joined with strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities.  Source link

 A Brazilian teenager was mauled to death by a lioness in full view of zoo visitors after scaling a 6m wall and safety fencing and shimmying down a tree into the enclosure, authorities said.Gerson de Melo Machado, 19, struggled with severe mental health issues and dreamed of being a lion tamer, according to those who knew him.The municipal government of the northeastern coastal city of Joao Pessoa said that Machado had “deliberately invaded the lioness’s enclosure” at the Arruda Camara Zoobotanical Park on Sunday morning.Flavio Fabres, head of the Joao Pessoa Legal Medical Institute, told AFP that Machado had been identified via his fingerprints.The cause of death was “bleeding due to injuries to the neck vessels”.On Monday state environmental authorities carried out an on-site inspection at the zoo, which remains closed, according to the municipality and the park.  Source link

(AFP)  Imran Khan, Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister, is in good physical health but facing isolation and psychological strain, his sister said yesterday, after a rare supervised visit following weeks in which his family said access had been blocked.Uzma Khanum, one of Khan’s three sisters, was the only family member permitted to meet him in Adiala Jail, where supporters of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had gathered outside to protest against conditions of his detention.She told reporters her brother “looked healthy” but had been undergoing “mental torture” being confined indoors for long periods with no communication with relatives or aides.”He is physically well,” said Khanum, who is a doctor. “But he is kept inside all the time and only goes out for a short while. There is no contact with anybody.”The meeting took place under strict supervision and without mobile devices, she said, declining to provide further details.Khan, 73, who served as prime minister from 2018-2022, has been in jail since his August 2023 arrest on disputed charges and is serving sentences in several cases he says are politically motivated.PTI says routine visits have been blocked for weeks despite court orders, fuelling rumours about his condition and possible prison transfers.Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said decisions about prison visits were up to jail officials and “not under control of the government”.Last week, one of Khan’s sons told Reuters the family had no direct or verifiable contact with him for more than three weeks and “no verifiable information at all” about his condition, saying they feared “something irreversible” might be concealed.They have also sought renewed access for his personal physician, who has not examined him for over a year.Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission, an independent rights monitor, said in a post on X it was “seriously concerned” by reports that Khan had been subjected to restrictive detention conditions and limits on family meetings.It called for regular access to relatives and legal counsel, which it described as a “fundamental safeguard against isolation and misuse of detention powers”, and urged authorities to comply with constitutional and international standards of humane treatment.  Source link

Israeli forces withdrew late last night from the city of Tubas and the town of Aqaba after two days of aggression and siege.The Palestinian news agency (WAFA) stated that over the past two days, Israeli soldiers had turned several homes into military posts after forcing their residents to leave in both Tubas and Aqaba.The occupation forces also carried out a large-scale raid on citizens’ homes, detaining several residents and subjecting them to field interrogations. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes also fired intermittently over the Tubas governorate throughout the operation.Occupation vehicles and infantry were heavily deployed in the neighborhoods of Tubas and Aqaba throughout the incursion, coinciding with the imposition of a curfew and the closure of entrances with earth mounds.The occupation forces had re-invaded Tubas and Aqaba at dawn on Monday, a day after withdrawing following a four-day offensive that lasted from dawn on Wednesday until Saturday evening.   Source link

England cricket captain Ben Stokes said yesterday the sudden death of former batsman Robin Smith at the age of 62 “hits you hard”.The South Africa-born Smith, who had moved to Australia and lived in Perth, attended the first Ashes Test almost a fortnight ago and met some of the England and England Lions players.Smith, who played 62 Tests between 1988 and 1996, has been hailed as “a batter ahead of his time” in tributes that poured in from around the cricketing world after his death on Monday.Stokes, speaking on the eve of the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, said although he didn’t know Smith well, it was a sad time for all of English cricket.”When you hear news like that it gets you and it hits you hard,” he said of a player who scored 4,236 Test runs for England, including nine centuries.”Just last week he was there chatting with the Lions and he was at the first Test. It hits you hard when you realise that it was only last week where he was doing those kinds of things.”Smith’s family announced their “profound sense of sadness and loss” in a statement released on Tuesday by Hampshire, his former English county club.”Robin died unexpectedly at his South Perth apartment on Monday, 1st December. The cause of his death is at present unknown,” they said.Smith was renowned for his fearless batting against the world’s fastest bowlers, including Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Waqar Younis.He struggled with mental health and alcohol-related problems in retirement.  Source link

 President Vladimir Putin yesterday warned European powers that if they started a war with Russia then Moscow was ready to fight and that the defeat of European powers would be so absolute that there would be no one left to even negotiate a peace deal.Four years into the Ukraine war, the deadliest European conflict in Europe since World War Two, Russia has failed to conquer Ukraine, a much smaller neighbour which has been supported by European powers and the United States.Ukraine and European powers have repeatedly warned that if Putin wins the Ukraine war then he could attack a Nato member, a claim which Putin has repeatedly dismissed as nonsense.Asked by a reporter about remarks in the Russian media that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had cautioned that Europe was preparing a war against Russia, Putin said that Russia did not want a war with Europe.”If Europe suddenly wants to start a war with us and starts it,” Putin said, then it would end so swiftly for Europe that there would be no one to negotiate with in Europe. Putin used the Russian word for “war”.He also suggested that the war in Ukraine was not a full-blown war and that Russia was acting in a “surgical” manner which would not be repeated in a direct confrontation with European powers.”If Europe suddenly wants to fight with us and starts, we are ready right now,” Putin said.The Kremlin chief accused European powers of hindering US President Donald Trump’s attempts to end the war in Ukraine by putting forward proposals they knew would be “absolutely unacceptable” to Moscow so they could then accuse Russia of not wanting peace.Putin said European powers had locked themselves out of peace talks on Ukraine because they had cut off contacts with Russia.”They are on the side of war,” Putin said of European powers.Putin also threatened to sever Ukraine’s access to the sea in response to drone attacks on tankers of Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Black Sea.     Source link

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) murdered at least 70,117 Palestinian civilians and injured at least 170,999 others since the beginning of the genocide that the Israeli occupation has been committing against the Gaza Strip in October 2023.  Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a statement that the hospitals across the Gaza Strip received five Palestinian martyrs over the past 24 hours, indicating that four of them were bombed and burned by the IOF, while one was pulled out of the rubble of one of the buildings that have been demolished by the IOF.  Hospitals across Gaza also received 13 injured civilians, the ministry added, pointing out that the Israeli occupation has been violating the ceasefire agreement repeatedly, having murdered at least 360 Palestinians and injured at least 922 others since the agreement went into effect in October.  The ministry also said that 617 bodies were pulled out of the rubble of demolished buildings since the ceasefire agreement, pointing out that civil defense and ambulance teams continue their efforts to search for the remaining victims trapped under thousands of tons of concrete piled up in all parts of the Gaza Strip, after having been destroyed by the Israeli occupation.  Source link
