UK announces additional contribution of 3 Million Pounds to support Gaza

The UK government announced it will provide an additional contribution of 3 million pounds to support the people of Gaza, specifically to aid charities participating in the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Middle East Humanitarian Appeal this winter.In a statement, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said that Gaza, which receives the largest share of donations within the Middle East Humanitarian Appeal, is experiencing heavy rains that have flooded tents and damaged residents’ belongings, amid a severe shortage of shelter and basic supplies. This leaves children facing bitterly cold nights without warm clothes or blankets.”The situation in Gaza remains critical, with winter weather taking conditions from bad to worse. Innocent families are facing icy winds and biting rain, forced to live in exposed conditions. We must act now to get vital winter aid to those that need it”, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said.She added that “the DEC’s aid partners have already done so much, and they have the skills and knowhow to effect real change on the ground – delivering aid, winter supplies and shelter”.According to the statement, the Disasters Emergency Response Committee’s Middle East Humanitarian Appeal has raised more than 55 million pounds since its launch in October 2024, providing life-saving assistance to those affected by conflict in Gaza, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Syria. Under the patronage of  President Ahmed Al-Shar’a, the Minister of Energy, Eng. Mohammed Al-Basheer, laid the foundation stone announcing the start of construction works for the Deir Ezzor Power Plant with a capacity of approximately 1,000 MW.This national event reflects the beginning of a new phase in which the country moves toward rebuilding the energy sector and strengthening its electrical security.The Minister was accompanied at the ceremony by Eng. Omar Shaqrouq, Deputy Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs, representatives of the international coalition led by UCC Urbacon, the Governor of Deir Ezzor Mr. Ghassan Ahmed, local community figures, and a number of directors from the coalition companies and officials from the Ministry of Energy.This project comes as part of a series of projects — with a total capacity of 5,000 MW — that were recently signed and will be implemented by an international consortium led by the Qatari company UCC Urbacon, with the participation of Cengiz (Türkiye), Kalyon (Türkiye), and Power International (USA).This strategic project represents a decisive step in the State’s efforts to turn the page on years of severe electricity shortages and move toward a more reliable and sustainable electrical system capable of meeting the needs of citizens and various industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors across the country, thereby driving economic growth.Stable electricity supply is a fundamental requirement for the return of factories and production lines to full capacity and for the establishment of new industrial, agricultural, and commercial projects. It also contributes to reducing operating costs, improving the business environment, and increasing the competitiveness of local production and exports — factors that encourage both domestic and foreign investment and support long-term diversification of the national economy.The Deir Ezzor Power Plant is the first and largest of the power plants to be launched under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) program. Once operational, it is expected to boost the national grid’s production capacity, improve supply stability, and meet the increasing demand for electricity in the eastern region and the rest of the governorates.The launch of the project is expected to have a positive impact on the region and the national economy by creating tens of thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.It will also contribute to localizing modern, high-efficiency, low-emission technologies, in accordance with international standards, in addition to developing trained and qualified technical personnel.Laying the foundation stone today sends a clear message that Syria is entering a new stage of recovery, in which major national capabilities are being rebuilt and strategic energy projects launched that restore Syria’s natural role and regional standing and support sustainable development.Through this event, the State reaffirms its continued commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure, improving quality of life, and opening broader horizons for economic prosperity in the coming years.  Source link

Estoori dominates late to retain Bu Samrah Cup

Meshaal bin Ali al-Attiyah’s Estoori retained the Bu Samrah Cup for the second consecutive year with a strong forward-running display at the Al Rayyan Racecourse today.Mohammed Balasim al-Jumaili-trained six-year-old bay horse raced prominently throughout before launching his move in the home straight, striking the front and drawing clear under Fayos Martin Borja for an impressive two-length victory in the Local Thoroughbred Handicap (45–65) race for the three-year-old+ over 1700m. With the win Martin Borja completed a double on the day.Estoori raced prominently throughout, adopting a forward-running style that kept him in the perfect stalking position. He tracked the early pace set by Nadiraha, with Barkt Al Majd positioned between them as the field made its way through the opening stages. Approaching the home turn, Estoori improved smoothly into second before launching his challenge upon straightening. He swept to the front early in the home straight, but was met with an immediate threat from Suheal Qatar, who produced a strong run from midfield to draw alongside and briefly test the defending champion. Inside the final 100m, Estoori displayed his class and determination. Responding decisively to Borja’s urging, he kicked clear from his challenger and put the race to bed with authority, securing a comfortable two-length victory. Suheal Qatar, representing Ateeq Hamad Ateeq al-Marri for trainer Abdulaziz Hamad al-Marri under Saleh Salem al-Marri, finished a clear second after his bold effort. A long way back, Al Gamamah, racing for and trained by Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim al-Malki with Ivan Rossi aboard, finished best of the rest to take third, though still a huge 12 lengths behind the runner-up.Earlier in the day, Martin Borja rode Sharq Stud’s Future Man to victory in the Thoroughbred Handicap (50-70) for three-year-old+ race.  Source link

Serena denies she plans tennis return despite registering for drug tests

Serena Williams insisted she had no plans to make a return to tennis after her registration with the sport’s drug-testing body sparked reports of a dramatic comeback. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has not competed since a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open left her one short of the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, held by Margaret Court in the women’s game and Novak Djokovic in men’s tennis. “It is correct that she is back on the Registered Testing Pool list,” Adrian Bassett, a spokesman for the the International Tennis Integrity Agency, the sport’s drug-testing body told AFP in London on Tuesday in response to media reports the 44-year-old American had registered. “At this stage we have no other information.” But Williams denied she was planning a return to competitive tennis by posting later Tuesday on X: “Omg (Oh My God) yall (you all) I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy”.Following her three-set defeat by Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic at Flushing Meadows three years ago, Williams said she did not want to use the word “retiring” but instead explained she was “evolving” away from tennis. Players who decide to return to testing need to provide information about their time and locations when they are available to give samples. They also need to complete testing for six months before they are allowed to return to competition. Williams’s older sister, Venus, – seven times major singles champion – returned to tennis in July at the age of 45 after almost two years away from the Women’s Tennis Association tour.When Venus, a seven-time major singles champion, came back at the DC Open, she spoke about wishing Serena would join her on tour again. The sisters won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles as a pair and three Olympic gold medals as well. “I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here,” said Venus at the time. “Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her.“But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”  Source link

Apple to resist India order to preload state-run app as political outcry builds

Apple does not plan to comply with a mandate to preload its smartphones with a state-owned cyber safety app and will convey its concerns to New Delhi, three sources said, after the government’s move sparked surveillance concerns and a political uproar.The Indian government has confidentially ordered companies including Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi to preload their phones with an app called Sanchar Saathi, or Communication Partner, within 90 days. The app is intended to track stolen phones, block them and prevent them from being misused.The government also wants manufacturers to ensure that the app is not disabled. And for devices already in the supply chain, manufacturers should push the app to phones via software updates, Reuters was first to report on Monday.India’s telecom ministry confirmed the move later, describing it as a security measure to combat “serious endangerment” of cyber security. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political opponents and privacy advocates criticized the move, saying it is a way for the government to gain access to India’s 730 million smartphones.In the wake of the criticism, India’s telecom minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday said the app was a “voluntary and democratic system,” adding that users can choose to activate it and can “easily delete it from their phone at any time.”At present, the app can be deleted by users. Scindia did not comment on or clarify the November 28 confidential directive that ordered smartphone makers to start preloading it and ensure “its functionalities are not disabled or restricted.”Apple however does not plan to comply with the directive and will tell the government it does not follow such mandates anywhere in the world as they raise a host of privacy and security issues for the company’s iOS ecosystem, said two of the industry sources who are familiar with Apple’s concerns. They declined to be named publicly as the company’s strategy is private.”Its not only like taking a sledgehammer, this is like a double-barrel gun,” said the first source.Apple and the telecom ministry did not respond to requests for comment.In tackling a recent surge of cyber crime and hacking, India is joining authorities worldwide, most recently in Russia, to frame rules blocking the use of stolen phones for fraud or promoting state-backed government service apps.”BIG BROTHER CANNOT WATCH US”The order caused a furore both inside and outside Parliament on Tuesday, with a number of lawmakers accusing the government of introducing an app that would act as a snooping tool. Rahul Gandhi of India’s main opposition Congress Party said he planned to speak about the app in Parliament.The Congress Party has called for a rollback of the mandate. On X, KC Venugopal, a top Congress leader, said “Big Brother cannot watch us.”The Modi government’s press release said the app can help tackle incidents of duplicated or spoofed IMEI numbers, which enable scams and network misuse.”India has big second-hand mobile device market,” the telecom ministry said in a statement late on Monday. “Cases have also been observed where stolen or blacklisted devices are being re-sold.”While Apple tightly controls its App Store and proprietary iOS software – which are crucial to its $100-billion-per-year services business – Google’s Android is open-sourced, allowing manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi greater leeway to modify their software.The second source said Apple does not plan to go to court or take a public stand, but it will tell the government it cannot follow the order because of security vulnerabilities.Apple “can’t do this. Period,” the person said.The app order comes as Apple is locked in a court fight with an Indian watchdog over the nation’s antitrust penalty law. Apple has said it risks facing a fine of up to $38 billion in a case.Other brands including Samsung are reviewing the order, said a fourth industry source who is familiar with the matter. Samsung did not respond to Reuters queries.Sources have said the government moved forward with the order without industry consultation.  Source link
