The Saudi Ministry of Energy said that a number of citizens and residents sustained injuries of varying severity after energy facilities and infrastructure in the southern region of the Kingdom were targeted this morning.A source from the Ministry of Energy said that the relevant authorities are continuing to address the repercussions of the attacks and are taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of facilities and personnel, as well as the continuity of operations in accordance with approved operational plans, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).The attacks caused fires at several locations, leading to a temporary halt in some operations. Specialized field teams have begun containing the fires, securing the sites, and assessing the damage.  Related Story Source link

Germany’s Alexander Zverev hits a return to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo during their men’s singles third-round tennis match (AFP) Top seed Alexander Zverev romped into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday with a straight sets defeat of Italy’s Luciano Darderi. Zverev, who had been taken to five sets in his opening two matches of the tournament, raced past 21st seed Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in 2hr 30mins on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. The brisk victory came as a welcome change for Zverev, whose marathon first and second round matches had finished in the early hours of the morning. “I don’t know what to do with myself because it’s before midnight,” Zverev quipped afterwards. “Compared to the first two matches, the level has been going up.” The 29-year-old French Open champion was in complete control throughout, punishing Darderi’s woeful service game to grab an early double break in the first set for a 3-0 lead.Darderi, who has failed to go further than the fourth round at any Grand Slam in his career, never looked like forcing his way back into the set thereafter. Zverev mopped up the first set easily and was soon back on the attack in the second, once again securing a quick double-break for a 3-0 lead before holding with ease to go two sets up.Darderi did manage to rally in the third set, suddenly finding his range with some blistering forehands and holding off four break points in the 11th game to help set up a tie-break. But Zverev’s superior service game meant there was only going to be one winner in the tie-break, a thunderous serve giving him a 5-2 lead before a scorching forehand into the corner took him to match point. Zverev then wrapped up victory with his 13th ace of the match.”I thought my level was very consistent,” Zverev said. “It was just he started playing incredibly well in the third set. I barely saw anyone hit the ball as hard consistently as he did in the third set,” added the German, who will now face Dutch veteran Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarter-finals.   Related Story Source link

An eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau caused eight airports to suspend flight operations yesterday, affecting hundreds of flights at Jakarta’s main airport, after some school activities and fishing were halted.Soekarno-Hatta International Airport suspended flight operations until 11:59pm (1659 GMT) due to volcanic ash, the airport posted on Instagram, stranding hundreds of passengers at the facility.The suspension, extended several times, has affected 964 flights in Jakarta’s main airport alone, the transportation ministry said. Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Lion Air Group said they had cancelled flights to and from Jakarta for the rest of the day.Total affected flights across the eight airports reached more than 1,500 flights with 170,000 passengers, the ministry said.Anak Krakatau, which is roughly halfway between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia’s vast island chain, has been erupting since late on Friday, with volcanic ash detected at the airport early yesterday, the transport ministry said.PASSENGERS STUCK AT SOEKARNO-HATTA INTERNATIONALAsh reached as high as 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) on the Java side of the volcano and 50,000 feet (15,000 metres) on the Sumatra side and some parts of Banten province in Java, meteorological agency BMKG posted on its website.Ersy Laksita Rini, 55, was upset when she arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International and learned that her 8am flight to Surabaya had been cancelled. She said the airline had not informed her ahead of time.”If the eruption happened last night and there were predictions of flight cancellations, we should have been notified from the start,” she told Reuters. “That way, passengers wouldn’t have needed to come here so early and could have looked for alternatives instead.”French national Eloan Tasset, 21, got a text from Batik Air that his flight to his holiday destination of Manado in North Sulawesi had been delayed, but he said it was unclear how long the delay would be.”If they tell me my flight is cancelled, I think I’m going to try to find a hotel in Jakarta,” he said.The airport operator said it was providing food and light refreshments for affected passengers and buses to hotels, in co-ordination with the airlines.The disaster mitigation agency BNPB said it would conduct a weather modification operation, which could include cloud-seeding, yesterday to promote rain.”If it rains heavily enough, the volcanic ash that has been disrupting our daily lives since yesterday and continuing today will be washed away quickly,” BNPB chief Suharyanto told a press conference.The transport ministry named three other airports across Java — Kertajati, Ahmad Yani and Juanda — as alternatives, “should airlines or operators be able to divert their flights”, said Minister Dudy Purwagandhi.FIVE INDONESIAN VOLCANOES AT ALERT LEVEL 3BNPB “urges the public to remain calm while increasing vigilance. In the event of ashfall, people are advised to wear masks and eye protection, reduce outdoor activities, cover water sources and exercise caution when driving, as volcanic ash can reduce visibility,” said spokesperson Berton Panjaitan.Ferries in the Sunda Strait were operating normally, the transport ministry said, urging vessels to stay at least 3km (2 miles) away from Anak Krakatau’s crater and remain vigilant for volcanic hazards, including volcanic ash and other ejected materials.Several schools cancelled activities on Saturday after students and residents suffered eye irritations from the ash, while fishermen cancelled fishing trips, local media outlet Kompas reported.Police distributed masks to motorists in Cianjur, West Java, some 200km (130 miles) from Anak Krakatau, the state news agency Antara reported, while the disaster management agency reported volcanic ash in the city, urging residents to stay indoors.Governors of Lampung and Jakarta have ordered remote learning starting today to prevent health risks for students caused by volcanic ash, state news agency Antara said.Some 850km (530 miles) away from Anak Krakatau, Mount Semeru in East Java also erupted yesterday, sending an ash column 1km (3,300 feet) above the summit, said volcano monitoring agency PVMBG. It advised residents to stay at least 5km (3 miles) away from the crater and warned of the risk of hot ash clouds and lava flows up to 17km (10 miles) from the summit.Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent. Anak Krakatau has been on alert level 3, the second-highest, since July 2. Semeru was also on level 3, as were three other volcanoes: Merapi, Lewotobi Laki-laki and Sinabung.The disaster mitigation agency said there was no imminent risk of tsunami from the volcano. A tsunami in 2018 caused by Anak Krakatau eruptions killed more than 400 on Java and Sumatra.Anak Krakatau, which means child of Krakatau, began emerging a century ago from the area previously occupied by Krakatau, then known as Krakatoa. The older volcano destroyed Oman’s navy yesterday revealed that it had rescued 16 crew members from a Saudi-flagged oil tanker that Iran attacked one week ago in the Strait of Hormuz.”A Royal Navy of Oman vessel provided logistical support to the tanker’s 25-member crew and evacuated 16 crew members while ensuring that the necessary medical care was provided,” Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said in a statement.The statement did not elaborate on the fate of all the crew members but confirmed two seamen on the vessel, the SIDR, had been killed in the incident.Saudi Arabia’s national shipping firm said on Wednesday that two Filipino sailors were killed when the tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz as fresh violence flared between the US and Iran earlier in the week.After six months of war, the foes remain at an impasse, with Iran disrupting traffic in the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the US persisting with a counter-blockade of Iranian ports.  Source link
