Ferran Torres scored an extra-time winner as Spain defeated holders Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup yesterday and shatter Lionel Messi’s dreams of a triumphant farewell to football’s greatest stage.Barcelona striker Torres lashed home a thumping finish in the 106th minute to reward a dominant display by Spain against an Argentina team who failed to register a single shot on target in 120 minutes.A star-studded crowd of 80,663 that included US President Donald Trump packed East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium to see if Argentina captain Messi could crown his glittering career with a second World Cup victory.But the 39-year-old maestro — almost certainly playing in his final World Cup game — was reduced to irrelevance as Spain took control early on against an Argentina team who committed a catalogue of cynical fouls throughout.The South Americans’ skullduggery ended with midfielder Enzo Fernandez being sent off after a brutal challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi in injury time.For long periods though it looked as if Argentina may somehow hold on for a penalty shoot-out as Spain struggled to make the breakthrough.But after Nico Williams had a goal controversially disallowed in extra-time, Spain struck.A lofted cross to the back post by Pedro Porro found Williams who nodded into the path of Torres to crash home the goal that would clinch Spain’s second World Cup title after their maiden 2010 triumph.Earlier, a clear sign of Argentina’s frustration came in the 15th minute when Alexis Mac Allister went flying in with a studs-up challenge that struck Dani Olmo’s ankle.Mac Allister escaped an early yellow card although after Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic only awarded a foul. Sport Pages 1, 4Spain made their presence felt moments later though, with Alex Baena poleaxing Messi with an elbow to the back that again escaped sanction.Argentina continued to test referee Vincic’s patience with a series of niggly challenges, and Nicolas Tagliafico was lucky not to be cautioned after raking Lamine Yamal’s calf in a clumsy challenge.Spain meanwhile continued to probe for openings but Mikel Oyarzabal failed to seriously test Emi Martinez with a low shot that the Argentina goalkeeper gathered easily in the 39th minute.Eventually though Vincic did reach for a yellow card, with Lisandro Martinez booked for a cynical challenge on Oyarzabal.Martinez was substituted shortly afterwards with an apparent injury, veteran Nicolas Otamendi coming on in his place.The final’s controversial extended half-time show featuring the likes of Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber stretched to 27 minutes but did little to upset Spain’s rhythm.The Spanish piled on the pressure in a lopsided second half as Argentina hung on grimly.Spain coach de la Fuente sent on Pedri and Ferran Torres for Fabian Ruiz and Oyarzabal and the chances continued with Argentina in full siege mode.Yamal twisted away and chipped a cross for Torres, whose downward header was saved by Martinez.Pedri and Cubarsi both lashed long-range shots that Martinez failed to grasp at the first attempt but somehow Argentina continued to hold on.But the arrival of substitutes Williams and Mikel Merino gave fresh life to Spain’s attacking momentum, and the onslaught continued.Fernandez was booked for dissent in the 82nd minute before Torres and Rodri both fired long-range shots from Martinez.Fernandez’s dismissal left Spain down to 10 men heading into extra-time.Martinez had one last save deep in stoppage time when Yamal’s superb whipped free-kick was clawed wide.The Spanish dominance continued in extra-time, with Williams almost opening the scoring with a glancing header that Martinez got down well to save one-handed.Moments later it looked as if Spain had made the breakthrough when Williams slid a low finish into the net but referee Vincic blew for a marginal foul on Nicolas Otamendi.But the breakthrough came with Torres’s winner on 106 minutes. Argentina made a desperate last raid on Spain’s goal but La Roja held firm to seal victory.  Source link

Hundreds evacuated from major new Spanish wildfire

-More than 1,200 people have fled a major new wildfire raging north of Madrid on Monday that has been burning through a mountainous area dotted with tiny villages, firefighters said.The fire started Thursday in a forest-covered mountainous area near the village of La Mierla in the Castilla-La Mancha region, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Madrid. The authorities ordered the evacuation of four more villages late on Sunday, bringing to over 1,200 the number of people who have had to flee their homes, the regional forest fire response service said on X.The fire has devoured more than 26,000 hectares (65,000 acres) of land, an area roughly equivalent to the Scottish city of Edinburgh.The head of the regional government, Emiliano Garcia-Page, said the authorities were making a ‘truly titanic’ effort to contain the blaze. ‘We will defeat this fire, people should have no doubt about that,’ he told reporters, saying the ‘absolute priority’ was to ‘protect towns and population centres’.The fire's ‘complexity’ was that it was raging through ‘the emptied Spain, the Spain of abandoned territories’.’These are immense areas dotted with micro-villages, tiny population centres. We have nearly 30 hamlets inside the fire zone, surrounded by flames,’ Garcia-Page said. An AFP journalist saw bright red flames and smoke rising from the ground late on Sunday night from a commercial plane flying over the affected region.Firefighters on Sunday managed to curtail the spread of another wildfire near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain after burning around 15,000 hectares.Earlier this month, Spain suffered one of its deadliest wildfires in recent history when a blaze in the southern province of Almeria killed 13 people and destroyed around 7,000 hectares. Scientists say human-caused climate change is increasing the length, intensity and frequency of heatwaves, drying out vegetation and raising the risk of destructive wildfires.In 2025, more than 393,000 hectares were destroyed by fire, according to the European Forest Fire Information System — the most in Spain's recent history Source link

Iran’s interior minister set to visit Islamabad on Monday: Pakistan ministry source

Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni is set to travel to mediator Pakistan’s capital on Monday, a Pakistani interior ministry source said. The source confirmed to AFP that the minister would have talks with Pakistani officials but did not elaborate on whether the trip was linked to Pakistan’s long-running mediation efforts to end fighting between the United States and Iran.Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson had signalled on Monday that diplomatic exchanges with the United States via mediators were ongoing despite US military strikes on the country. Pakistan said last week it would encourage the warring nations to stop violence and resume talks under a memorandum of understanding it helped mediate last month. The interim agreement and a possible path towards a permanent halt to the war had come into question when fresh fighting broke out this month.Momeni has previously taken part in mediation talks and met with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi when he visited Iran Source link

Rubio hails Lebanon for peace efforts after meeting president

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington Sunday, praising the country for its ‘move towards peace’ after the latest round of Lebanon-Israel talks.It was the first trip to the US capital by a Lebanese head of state since Michel Sleiman was received by Barack Obama in 2009.Aoun and Rubio held talks at the State Department, and Lebanese officials said Aoun is due to meet with President Donald Trump on Tuesday.Rubio commended the Lebanese government for its ‘determined effort to reclaim Lebanon's sovereignty, disarm Hezbollah and dismantle its terrorist infrastructure, and move towards peace,’ the State Department said following the talks.Israel and Lebanon — which do not have formal diplomatic relations — began US-sponsored negotiations in April aimed at reaching a peace deal and permanently ending the Israel-Hezbollah war.On June 26, they reached a framework agreement in Washington under which the Israeli military is to withdraw from southern Lebanon and the Lebanese army is to deploy, starting with two ‘pilot zones’.But the agreement is contingent on the disarmament of Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, which has flatly rejected both the deal and the Israel-Lebanon negotiations that underpin it.Following the latest round of talks last week in Rome, Israel and Lebanon agreed on the structure and guidelines for implementing the pilot zones, according to the US.Rubio said Washington was committed ‘to supporting the successful implementation of the Trilateral Framework and to backing the Government of Lebanon's efforts to deliver peace, economic recovery, and a better future for the Lebanese people.’Hezbollah pulled Lebanon into the Middle East war on March 2, when it began striking Israel in support of its backer Iran.Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground invasion, and despite a ceasefire it continues sporadic attacks and holds territory in the south in what it describes as a ‘security zone.’While in Washington, Aoun planned talks ‘on the situation in Lebanon and ways to strengthen the ceasefire’ as well as on ‘the withdrawal of Israel from the Lebanese regions it occupies,’ his office said earlier.The US carried out air strikes Sunday to ‘punish’ Iran after the first US military deaths since open hostilities rekindled the Middle East war.  Source link
