Child travellers sit after Kenya aviation workers ended their strike that disrupted flights at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya. Kenyan aviation workers have called off a strike that paralysed the country’s main international airport for two days, the civil aviation authority said on Tuesday, reports AFP. Thousands of passengers were stranded in the capital Nairobi and at other airports around the east African country on Sunday and Monday as workers staged a go-slow protest. It was the latest in a series of strikes and threatened shutdowns by aviation unions demanding a new collective bargaining agreement and an end to the use of volunteer staff. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said in a statement that an agreement had been reached to move forward negotiations on the bargaining agreement and the “non-victimisation of employees arising from the industrial action”. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi is a major regional hub and vital to Kenya’s tourism trade. In a statement, Transport Minister Davis Chirchir said the government had brokered an agreement between the key parties, but added that “the quantified loss to the economy… has been huge”. Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) secretary general Moss Ndiema told reporters that it was “effectively calling off our strike action” and that it would begin “normalising” operations. National carrier Kenya Airways said in a statement it was working to restore operations.  Source link

Egypt, China leaders call for de-escalation as regional tensions discussed

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have called for efforts to contain regional tensions and protect the security of Gulf states during talks in Cairo.President Sisi met President Xi, who is visiting Egypt, on Wednesday to discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern.The Egyptian president stressed the need to reduce tensions and respect the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan.He also called for ensuring freedom of navigation and preventing civilians from bearing the consequences of the regional crisis.On the Palestinian issue, El-Sisi highlighted Egypt’s efforts to advance the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and stressed the need to ensure sufficient humanitarian aid reaches the territory.Xi said China was keen to strengthen coordination with Egypt at international forums and on regional and international issues of mutual concern.He said greater cooperation between the two countries could contribute to regional security and development and support the peaceful resolution of conflicts.  Source link

Qatar Olympic Committee honours 102 employees at “Journey & Achievement Ceremony 2026”

In the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), the QOC held its “Journey & Achievement Ceremony 2026” today at its headquarters, celebrating its employees and recognising their dedication, outstanding performance and commitment to continuous learning and development.  The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mohamed bin Yousef Al Mana, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee; H.E. Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Second Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee; and H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, along with a number of QOC department directors.  H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani honoured 102 QOC employees, including 30 recipients of the Appreciation, Excellence, Incentive and “Ambition” awards, as well as 72 graduates of the 2025 development programmes.  The Appreciation Award comprised two categories: employees who have completed 25 years or more of service, in recognition of their longstanding dedication, loyalty and contributions to the QOC’s journey; and retired employees who concluded their careers after years of service and achievement, in appreciation of their efforts and contributions throughout their time at the QOC.The Excellence Award featured three categories: Supervisory Positions, Specialist Category and Employee Category, recognising employees who demonstrated outstanding leadership and team management, professional and specialised competence, high-quality performance, and a continued commitment to developing their skills and professional capabilities.  The Incentive Awards comprised five categories: Job Commitment Award, Initiative Award, Cooperation and Teamwork Award, Distinguished Team Leader Award, and Effective Participation in Organising Sports Events Award. The awards recognised employees who demonstrated outstanding commitment, initiative, collaboration and leadership, as well as those who made notable contributions to the successful organisation of sporting events.  The QOC also honoured seven employees with the “Ambition” Award, which is presented to employees who obtained academic qualifications during 2025, in recognition of their ambition and commitment to continuing their education and developing their academic and professional capabilities in ways that benefit the QOC.  The ceremony also recognised 72 employees who graduated from five development programmes in 2025. These included 12 graduates of the Leadership Excellence Programme, 15 from the Sports Events Organising Cadres Programme, 15 from the Competencies Programme, 15 from the Tawasol Programme and 15 from the Artificial Intelligence Programme.  The programmes aim to develop the leadership and professional capabilities of QOC employees, prepare and qualify the next generation of leaders, and develop qualified personnel capable of managing and organising sporting events efficiently and professionally. They also seek to strengthen institutional communication skills and promote the effective use of artificial intelligence tools in the workplace to support digital transformation and enhance institutional performance.  The Tawasol and Artificial Intelligence programmes were recently introduced under the direction of H.E. the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee. The Tawasul Programme focuses on developing employees’ institutional communication skills, strengthening their ability to build effective professional relationships and represent the QOC professionally at local and international forums. The Artificial Intelligence Programme aims to equip employees with the skills to utilise artificial intelligence tools in the workplace.  Maryam Al Kuwari: Creativity is a culture and a practice in the workplace  Ms. Maryam Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari, Director of Human Resources and Administrative Affairs at the Qatar Olympic Committee, said that the “Journey & Achievement 2026” ceremony provides an opportunity to recognise the efforts of QOC employees and celebrate examples of dedication, excellence and ambition, noting that every achievement is underpinned by a journey of hard work, commitment and development.  She said: “Every year, through ‘Journey & Achievement’, we seek to highlight a value that we want to embed in our daily practices and workplace culture. This year, we have chosen ‘Creativity’, reflecting our belief that organisations looking to the future do not simply repeat what has worked in the past, but continuously seek better ways of working and developing.”  Al Kuwari highlighted the QOC’s commitment to attracting outstanding talent from leading universities, with a focus on specialised fields that align with the Committee’s current and future needs. She noted that over the past three years, the QOC has recruited 98 employees, including talented professionals and graduates from leading universities, across specialised fields including sports management, information systems, law, finance and accounting, marketing and communications, among others.  She added that the QOC has witnessed a significant increase in women’s participation in its workforce in recent years, with women now accounting for 42% of the QOC’s total workforce, alongside increased female representation in supervisory and leadership positions.  Al Kuwari added that the QOC’s responsibility does not end with attracting talent, but extends to developing and investing in its employees. She noted that the QOC began its development programme journey in 2019 with just one programme, and today, thanks to the continued support and guidance of the QOC’s senior leadership, it has five specialised development programmes: the Sports Events Organising Cadres Programme, Competencies Programme, Leadership Excellence Programme, Artificial Intelligence Programme and Tawasol Programme.  She explained that 277 employees from across the QOC’s departments have graduated from the five development programmes since their launch. In addition, nearly 100 training courses and awareness, educational and learning programmes were delivered in 2025, benefiting approximately 1,000 employees from QOC departments, sports federations and committees.  Al Kuwari also highlighted the importance of the Artificial Intelligence Programme in developing employees’ ability to effectively utilise AI technologies and tools in the workplace, helping to improve productivity, enhance working methods and identify more efficient and innovative solutions. Two Turkish-Flagged vessels collide off Istanbul, 10 crew missing

Two Turkish-flagged commercial vessels collided in the Sea of Marmara early Wednesday, and authorities were unable to establish contact with one of the vessels and its 10 crew members, the Istanbul Governor’s Office said.The collision occurred approximately 18 nautical miles south of Istanbul’s Silivri district, involving the Turkish-flagged commercial vessels Alsu and Tugberk Imamoglu, the governor’s office said in a statement.Numerous vessels from the Turkish Coast Guard and the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, along with a Coast Guard helicopter, were dispatched to the scene.Initial assessments by responding units found no visible damage to the Alsu, while authorities were unable to establish contact with the Tugberk Imamoglu and its 10-member crew, the statement said.Search and rescue operations were launched by sea and air, with Coast Guard and maritime rescue units deployed to the area.Turkey’s maritime affairs authority later said the Tugberk Imamoglu was believed to have sunk after it failed to respond to calls and authorities were unable to reach its crew.The cause of the collision and further details of the incident were not immediately known.The Sea of Marmara forms part of the Turkish Straits system, a major maritime route linking the Black Sea with the Aegean Sea. The area is a busy shipping lane, with heavy vessel traffic and challenging maritime conditions.  Related Story Source link

Kuwait condemns Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Jordan

Kuwait has strongly condemned Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Jordan, calling them a violation of the two countries’ sovereignty and international law.In a statement, Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said the attacks constituted a “blatant breach” of the sovereignty of Bahrain and Jordan and violated the principles of international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.The ministry called for an immediate end to “escalating actions” and urged all sides to pursue de-escalation and dialogue.It also called for respect for international law and the principles of good neighborly relations, saying this was necessary to protect regional security and stability and prevent further tension.Kuwait expressed its full solidarity with Bahrain and Jordan and said it supported measures taken by both countries to protect their sovereignty, security and stability.The statement comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Gulf and Arab states increasingly calling for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.  Related Story Source link

Bahrain air defences intercept Iranian attacks

Bahrain said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed a number of Iranian aerial attacks on Wednesday.The Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) said in a statement carried by Bahrain News Agency (BNA) that all its units and weapons systems remain at the highest level of readiness and are fully prepared to defend the country.It urged residents to exercise caution and avoid approaching any unfamiliar or suspicious objects that may have fallen as a result of the attacks, and to report them immediately.The BDF also said the deliberate use of missiles and drones to target civilians constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.  Source link

US military carries out wave of strikes on Iranian military targets

The US military has completed a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.CENTCOM said US forces struck targets belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites.The strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members, CENTCOM said.More than 50,000 US service members are currently operating across the Middle East and remain prepared to carry out further operations, the command said.The latest strikes mark a renewed escalation in hostilities between the United States and Iran after a period of relative calm.  Source link
