The Shura Council participated over two days in the 2026 Parliamentary Hearing organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in cooperation with the United Nations at its headquarters in New York, under the theme “Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people”.The Council was represented at the session by HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, and HE Member of the Council Ahmed bin Ibrahim Al Maliki, alongside a number of speakers and members of legislative councils and national parliaments, permanent representatives of states to the United Nations, as well as international experts and advisors.The hearing aimed to explore ways in which parliaments and the United Nations can work together more effectively to achieve a more peaceful, just, sustainable, and prosperous world.The session addressed several key issues, most notably discussing the journey of the United Nations as it marks the 80th anniversary of its founding, and examining ways to strengthen international partnerships to ensure the sustainability of the Organization’s objectives. This axis discussed how parliaments can assist the United Nations in fulfilling its commitments.The discussions also included activating the United Nations Pact for the Future by translating global commitments into tangible realities within countries through the oversight and legislative roles of parliaments.The parliamentary hearing further addressed safeguarding public participation by examining the challenges facing parliaments and their impact on the performance of their oversight and legislative roles.It also discussed United Nations financing and securing its future in a manner that ensures financial sustainability and the independence of its programs and activities.The session witnessed the launch of the IPU report titled “Political Violence Against MPs Rising Worldwide,” which monitors the phenomenon of violence and harassment targeting parliamentarians and its impact on their lives and ability to carry out their legislative and oversight duties.In her intervention during the discussion of the theme “UN at 80: Renewing Trust and Purpose through Cooperation and Partnership,” HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, emphasized that geopolitical divisions among major powers are among the most significant challenges undermining the effectiveness of the United Nations.She added that the Organization’s inability to enforce its resolutions in a binding manner, as well as declining trust in it, limit its impact.Her Excellency stressed that legislative councils and parliaments can serve as essential partners to the United Nations in fulfilling its promises by translating international commitments into national legislation, allocating the necessary resources, and following up on implementation through oversight committees.She noted that reforming the United Nations and activating its role requires the inclusion of parliaments as a fundamental pillar in the international system.Under the theme “Financing and Future-Proofing the United Nations,” Her Excellency pointed out that the future of the United Nations depends on its ability to obtain balanced and predictable resources.She affirmed that legislative councils and parliaments are capable of ensuring the provision of such resources through their roles in legislation, oversight, and approval of national budgets. They can also advocate for innovative sources of funding, such as programs supported by certain organizations and civil society institutions, partnerships with the private sector, and the expansion of UN trust funds.In this regard, Her Excellency talked about the contributions of the State of Qatar and its continued support for United Nations projects and programs, noting that Qatar has become strongly present in most of the Organization’s activities. Since joining the United Nations in 1971, Qatar has been keen to contribute effectively to achieving the Organization’s goals in maintaining international peace and security and supporting development across the world.For his part, HE Ahmed Al Maliki stated, in his intervention during the discussion of the theme “Translating Together International Commitments into National Realities,” that parliaments can work jointly with other parliaments to translate UN principles into tangible realities that serve peoples and enhance trust in the international system.In the other session, which included the launch of the Inter-Parliamentary Union report monitoring violence and harassment targeting parliamentarians, His Excellency affirmed that intimidation and threats against parliamentarians undermine the ability of legislative institutions to perform their core functions.He called for the establishment of national safeguards, such as deterrent legislation and parliamentary security measures, as well as international guarantees through the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations, to ensure that parliamentarians remain able to exercise oversight and legislation freely.On the sidelines of the Council’s participation in the parliamentary hearing, HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti held a number of bilateral meetings with heads of participating delegations. He Excellency met with HE Head of Delegation and First Deputy Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives Mohammed Al Sabbari; HE Head of Delegation and Member of the Belgian Senate Andries Gryffroy; HE Head of Delegation and Member of the Canadian House of Commons Rob Oliphant; HE Head of Delegation and Member of the National People’s Congress of China Tian Xuejun; HE Head of Delegation and Member of the UK House of Commons Fabian Hamilton; HE Head of Delegation and Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia Nelly Mutti; HE Member of the French Senate Louis-Jean de Nicolay; and HE Member of the Austrian Parliament Doris Bures.During these meetings, they exchanged views on the issues on the hearing’s agenda, and ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation were discussed in a manner that serves the interests of peoples, strengthens joint action at various levels, and supports efforts to achieve development, peace, and stability. (QNA)QNA 1105 GMT 2026/02/14 His Excellency Khalifa bin Jassim al-Jaham al-Kuwari His Excellency Khalifa bin Jassim al-Jaham al-Kuwari, President of the General Tax Authority, headed Qatar’s delegation participating in the Sixth Meeting of the Global Forum on Value Added Tax (VAT) in Paris. The forum was organised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and held in Paris from January 26-28. The forum is considered a high-level international platform that brings together senior officials from tax administrations around the world to discuss the design and implementation of VAT/GST systems, exchange experiences in addressing challenges related to the digital economy, e-commerce, crypto-assets, and artificial intelligence, as well as to review best practices aimed at enhancing tax compliance and developing risk management mechanisms. Qatar’s participation in this meeting reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international co-operation in the field of tax policy and exchanging expertise in a manner that contributes to enhancing the efficiency of domestic tax systems, in addition to supporting international efforts to modernise and develop tax frameworks in line with evolving economic and technological changes.  Related Story Source link

Nigerian authorities announced that at least 25 people have died, while 14 others are still missing, following a boat capsizing incident in Yobe State in northeastern Nigeria.The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency said that the incident occurred when a large boat capsized after departing from a village in Jigawa State on its way to Yobe State, noting that the boat was carrying 52 passengers.  The authorities explained that 13 passengers were rescued alive and 25 bodies were recovered, while search and rescue operations are continuing to find the 14 missing persons. The Jigawa State Police confirmed that the incident occurred, explaining that the boat capsized due to water leakage. Deadly boat accidents are common in Nigeria, where vessels often operate without proper safety measures. Last September, at least 60 people were killed when an overloaded boat sank after colliding with a tree trunk in Niger State in central Nigeria. Qatar Fintech Hub (QFTH), supported by Qatar Development Bank (QDB), has concluded the seventh wave of ‘Demo Day’ of fintech companies graduating from its pre-acceleration and acceleration programmes.The event was attended by representatives from regulators, business ecosystem partners, and a select group of investors, financial sector leaders, and entrepreneurs. QDB, represented by QFTH, made a strategic announcement regarding the ‘Fintech Development Grant’ provided by the Qatar Central Bank (QCB), and the launch of the new model of the ‘Pre-seed Investment Programme’.The event, held under the title ‘Fintech Transformed: From Vision to Impact’, reaffirmed the continued progress of Qatar’s financial ecosystem. This year’s edition, the largest in terms of participating companies, featured presentations from 20 startups enrolled in the ‘pre-acceleration and acceleration programmes.These startups had undergone weeks of thorough hands-on training and specialised mentorship, covering technical and organisational product development, navigating legal and regulatory procedures, preparing for investment, and entering and competing in the market.The seventh wave of companies demonstrated significant maturity and diverse expertise, spanning strategic areas that contribute to the future development of Qatar’s financial sector. These areas include Open Banking, Crowdfunding, InsurTech, and Emerging Tech, in alignment with the objectives of Qatar’s National FinTech Strategy and the Third Financial Sector Strategic Plan.The ‘Fintech Development Grant’, provided by the QCB through QFTH, will offer co-funding of up to QR1.5mn per company, linked to key milestones in each company’s growth journey. The grant aims to enhance technical and regulatory readiness, support product development, and facilitate market entry.QDB also presented the updated model of the ‘Pre-seed Investment Programme’ to finance early-stage companies and graduates of QFTH programmes, announcing an increase in direct investment funding to QR730,000 ($200,000) per company. This comes in addition to other high-quality support services and packages provided by the hub, most notably the opportunity to apply to the ‘Talent Community Programme’, which is designed to attract specialised talent to work in Qatar by offering premium residential spaces.The event also witnessed the announcement of the redesign of the QFTH’s operating methodology through the introduction of an applied model known as the ‘Lab Model’. This model provides a practical pathway for product development and regulatory readiness, enabling companies to transition to the testing environment (sandbox) and initiate the licensing process quickly and effectively. The hub will also hold discussion sessions with companies to better understand their needs and work to address them through an integrated support ecosystem.The success of the latest wave marks a continuation of QDB’s journey in supporting innovation in the fintech sector. Through QFTH, QDB has successfully graduated seven waves of fintech companies so far, in addition to the support it has provided through investments and financing exceeding QR73mn within the sector, whether through the QFTH or QDB’s investment arm.This reflects QDB’s pivotal role in strengthening Qatar’s position as a regional centre for fintech, based on strategic partnerships with regulators and financial and technical institutions. The momentum was further reinforced by recent achievements during QDB’s participation in the Singapore FinTech Festival, which resulted in the signing of a strategic agreement with the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) to establish a fintech centre of excellence and support in Qatar, the first-of-its-kind in the region, as well as to host an international fintech forum in Qatar in the future. It represents a significant addition to the supportive ecosystem and advanced infrastructure provided by Qatar.  Related Story Source…

US President Donald Trump announced that he has approved the export of an advanced artificial intelligence chip produced by US technology giant Nvidia to China, under strict national security conditions.In a post on social media on Monday, Trump said Nvidia will be permitted to sell its H200 processors to China, stressing that the move would be subject to rigorous safeguards to protect US national security. He added that he has informed Chinese President Xi Jinping of the decision, noting that Xi responded “positively.”Trump said the US Department of Commerce is finalizing the details of the arrangement, adding that the same framework would apply to other major US semiconductor companies, including AMD and Intel.The H200 chip, unveiled two years ago, features higher-bandwidth memory than its predecessor, the H100, enabling significantly faster data processing. Reports indicate that allowing its export would enable Chinese AI laboratories to build supercomputers with performance comparable to leading US artificial intelligence systems, albeit at a higher cost.Trump, however, confirmed that the export of Nvidia’s latest Blackwell chips will remain prohibited.”We will protect national security, create American jobs, and keep America’s lead in AI,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nvidia’s US customers are already moving forward with their highly advanced Blackwell chips, and soon Rubin, neither of which are part of this deal.”For its part, Nvidia welcomed the decision, saying in a statement: “Offering H200 to approved commercial customers, vetted by the Department of Commerce, strikes a thoughtful balance that is great for America.”   Related Story Source link
