 Bushehr nuclear power plant, Iran’s only operational civilian nuclear facility, was built by Russia and officially handed over in September 2013, after decades of twists, turns and delays linked to Iran’s turbulent history. The facility, located in the south of the country and equipped with a 1,000-megawatt reactor, was hit yesterday by a US-Israeli airstrike, killing a security guard, Iranian state media reported. It had already been targeted four times since the start of the war on February 28. Yesterday, Russia, which sends technicians to help operate it, began evacuating its 198 Rosatom employees. Yesterday’s strike was just the latest episode in the plant’s turbulent history.The project began in 1975 during the Shah’s reign, and was initially awarded to Germany’s Siemens. But work on it was interrupted by the 1979 Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). Although a major oil and gas producer, Iran sought to revive the project in the late 1980s to diversify its energy resources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels for domestic consumption. But Germany’s government persuaded Siemens to withdraw over concerns about nuclear proliferation. Tehran then turned to Russia, which took over the contract in January 1995, aiming to commission the 1,000-megawatt pressurized water reactor in 1999. But a series of problems led to an 11-year delay.Russians and Iranians also had several financial disputes over the cost, estimated at over $1bn. Washington exerted pressure on Moscow not to complete the plant, which the US feared would facilitate Iran’s potential acquisition of nuclear weapons.Moscow obtained a waiver to complete Bushehr by concluding an agreement with Tehran that included supplying Iran with the fuel used by the plant — then repatriating it back to Russia to reduce the risk of proliferation. Many analysts and diplomats believe Russia delayed the plant’s completion to maintain leverage over Iran, particularly to compel it to co-operate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). CIVILIAN USEUnlike Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility or the future Arak heavy water nuclear power plant, the Bushehr facility is not considered a proliferation risk.For years, Western nations have accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, an accusation Tehran denies. Iran has repeatedly accused or suspected Israel — the country considered the only military nuclear power in the region — of sabotaging some of its uranium enrichment facilities. While the US has insisted on a total ban on Iranian uranium enrichment, Iran defends its right to civilian nuclear programmes, even though it has reached a 60% enrichment level — far beyond what is required for civilian use.   Source link

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) murdered at least 72,292 Palestinian civilians and injured at least 172,073 others since the beginning of the genocide that the Israeli occupation has been committing against the Gaza Strip in October 2023.The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip said in a statement on Sunday that hospitals across the Gaza Strip received four martyrs – four of whom have been pulled out from under the rubble, in addition to five injured persons.The statement indicated that many of the victims remain under the rubble and scattered on the streets, as ambulance and civil defense crews are still unable to reach them.Since the “ceasefire” agreement went into effect in October 2025, the IOF murdered at least 716 Palestinians, and injured at least 1,968 others, while 759 bodies were pulled out from under the rubble. Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy said today that two power generation and water distillation plants were targeted by hostile Iranian drones, causing significant material damage and taking two electricity generation units out of service. There were no casualties reported.In a press statement, ministry spokesperson Fatima Jawhar Hayat said that technical and emergency teams have begun their work in accordance with approved emergency plans, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure the safety and stability of the electricity and water systems, which represent a top priority.She affirmed that all technical teams were working around the clock to ensure uninterrupted services.  Source link

Three Palestinians were martyred and others wounded Sunday morning in a new Israeli airstrike on Gaza City.Palestinian news agency (WAFA), citing medical sources, reported that the three Palestinians were martyred when Israeli forces targeted a gathering of civilians near Al-Shawa Square, east of the city.Since the ceasefire last October, the death toll has risen to 720, with injuries exceeding 1,968, while 756 bodies have been recovered.  Source link

The Bahrain Petroleum Company, BAPCO Energies, announced that a tank caught fire at one of its storage facilities on Sunday following an Iranian drone attack. No injuries were reported.In a statement, BAPCO said the fire has been fully extinguished and the situation is under control. Damages are currently being assessed.Emergency response teams acted immediately, working closely with Civil Defense and relevant authorities to contain the incident and secure the site, it added.Earlier, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior announced that a fire at a facility, resulting from an Iranian attack, had been brought under control.  Source link

Gulf states recorded a sharp rise in renewable energy output in 2024, driven by rapid expansion in solar and wind capacity, according to a GCC Statistical Center's report.The report highlighted major shifts in climate and sustainability efforts across the region.Solar capacity posted an average annual growth of 88.1 percent between 2013 and 2024, with electricity generation rising from 0.13 GWh in 2013 to 23.5 TWh in 2023.Wind capacity also increased significantly, from 4.8 MW in 2015 to 567 MW in 2024.Rainfall rose 49.4 percent in 2024 compared to the 1980-2010 average, indicating changing weather patterns.Temperature readings remained stable, with no recorded extremes exceeding 49°C between 2012 and 2024.All GCC states now operate advanced mobile-based early warning systems and have integrated climate change education into school curricula.Internationally, they have submitted 16 cumulative reports to the UN climate framework as of November 2025.  Source link

Iraqi authorities have suspended passenger movement and trade at the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran following an airstrike that hit the Iranian side of the facility.Head of the Basra Provincial Council’s security committee Aqeel Al Furaiji said operations were halted after the passports building was struck.Authorities are awaiting security assessments before deciding whether to resume activity, warning the closure will remain in place if risks persist.Earlier, a security source reported that a warplane targeted the commercial exchange area at the crossing.  Source link

The Arab Parliament condemned today the Iranian attack on a power generation and water distillation station in Kuwait, which resulted in material damage to the facility, noting that the attack came just days after other blatant assaults targeting electricity and water desalination plants in the country.In a statement, Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi said that targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy and water facilities, violates all international norms, international law, and international humanitarian law. He called on the international community to put an end to such criminal acts that threaten Arab national security.He affirmed the Arab Parliament’s full solidarity with Kuwait and with all Arab countries subjected to such attacks, and its support for any measures taken to protect their security and stability, safeguard their sovereignty, and preserve their territorial integrity.  Source link
