UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world is going through the “most dangerous nuclear moment since the end of the Cold War,” with nuclear arsenals undergoing expansions and modernizations and advances in technology increasing the odds of mistake and miscalculation.The statements of the UN Secretary-General came during the plenary meeting of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, in New York.The meeting aims to raise awareness of the threat posed by nuclear weapons and to contribute to mobilizing efforts to establish a world free of such weapons.Guterres expressed his concerns regarding the expiration of the New START Treaty earlier this year, as well as the inability of the eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to reach consensus on a substantive outcome.”Just when they are most needed, the safeguards built over decades to contain these dangers are breaking down,” the UN chief said.He noted that the United Nations Disarmament Commission once again completed its three-year cycle without substantive recommendations.”These are not simply diplomatic disappointments – they are warning signals. A flight bound for Israel from the United Arab Emirates diverted to Saudi Arabia after transmitting emergency signals following a fight between the pilots rather than a hijacking, an Israeli official said on Wednesday. Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted over Jordanian airspace towards Saudi Arabia, transmitting a general emergency signal before transmitting another emergency signal that indicated a possible unlawful interference several minutes later, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. The aircraft’s data appeared to show that it had suddenly and rapidly descended by nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the first emergency signal, Flightradar24 said. The Boeing 737 plane then again transmitted the general emergency signal before landing at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, the website said.The incident was not believed to have been a hijacking, a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister’s office said.An airline spokesperson said the flydubai flight experienced an “incident” en route to Tel Aviv and diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely. All passengers were safe and accounted for, the spokesperson said, without providing any further details. Several Israeli media reported that a fight had broken out between the plane’s pilots, reportedly causing a distress signal to be activated.Israel’s Kan public broadcaster and Channel 12 reported that the Israeli military had scrambled fighter jets after fears of a possible hijacking — with the hypothesis later dismissed. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the premier had held consultations on the matter and was “monitoring developments”. “The incident is under control, and all measures are currently being deployed in order to return the Israeli passengers safely to Israel,” a statement said. Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty and Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohamed Mustafa discussed, in a telephone call today, the developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.The call addressed the developments in the Gaza Strip and the efforts made by Egypt, in coordination with mediators, to implement the US President Donald Trump peace roadmap, which include Israel’s withdrawal from the enclave; ensuring flow of humanitarian assistance; initiating early recovery and reconstruction efforts; the entry of the Palestinian National Authority’s committee to manage Gaza; and the deployment of an international stabilization force.The two sides also touched on the serious developments in the occupied West Bank, where the Egyptian Foreign Minister denounced the illegal settlement expansion and the escalating settler violence and attacks against Palestinians and their property. He warned against the dangers posed by the E1 settlement project, which threatens the geographical contiguity of the Palestinian territories and isolates East Jerusalem from its Palestinian surroundings.Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection to any attempts of annexing Palestinian territories; displacing Palestinians, or altering the legal and demographic status of the occupied territories, which would entrench the status quo and undermine the prospects for establishing a Palestinian state. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Saturday condemned Israel’s continued settlement plans in the occupied West Bank, including the E1 settlement project, warning that pursuing such plans constitutes a flagrant challenge to international law and a systematic undermining of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi stressed that such practices by Israeli occupation forces would undermine prospects for peace and threaten international and regional efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state. He called on the international community to take serious and responsible action to halt Israel’s settlement policies and plans and to oppose any measures aimed at altering the geographic and demographic character of the occupied Palestinian territories. Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
