Addressing the UN General Assembly, the Emir said that “the essence of the dangerous situation we are witnessing is the absence of a regional system of collective security – one that respects the sovereignty, integrity and territorial unity of States, encourages the peaceful resolution of disputes, and rules out interference in the internal affairs of nations.”
Despite everything that has happened, he said, Qatar remains deeply and realistically convinced that the Gulf crisis can be resolved diplomatically, through reopening the Strait of Hormuz to navigation and a return to negotiations between Iran and the United States.
“The chance for a realistic and peaceful diplomatic solution must not be squandered,” he added.
A real test
The Emir described the destruction of Gaza as “genocide, in every sense the word carries, and a stain on the conscience of all humanity – future generations will be stunned by the sheer scale of the gap between the catastrophe and the level of the international response to stop it.”
He added that it was not credible to speak of a just international order while Palestine remains such a blind spot.
On the Gaza ceasefire agreement, he said the international community bore direct responsibility to push for its implementation and must not allow the deal to be held hostage to the calculations of a party accustomed to breaking its commitments whenever it has a free hand.
He also said that “the continued persecution, apartheid and settler terrorism in the occupied West Bank, the desecration of Islamic and Christian holy sites – foremost among them Al-Aqsa Mosque – and the denial of the Palestinian people’s rights, chief among them their inherent right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, remain an open wound.”
He stressed that “curbing” the harm caused by Israel and “reining in its conduct outside the law is the real test by which the international community will prove its seriousness in upholding values and the rule of law.”
Support for Syria, Lebanon, Yemen
Sheikh Tamim affirmed that Qatar stands with the Syrian people during their recovery and reconstruction, and supports State institutions, sovereignty, independence and national and territorial unity.
On the Sudan war, he called for a comprehensive dialogue leading to lasting peace that preserves the country’s unity and sovereignty.
On Lebanon, he affirmed that Qatar supports its State institutions and its sovereignty over the whole of its territory, condemns Israeli attacks against it, and stresses the need to abide by the ceasefire and Security Council resolution 1701.
He said Qatar also supports UN efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen.
