Eight people, including students, were injured in a shooting outside a vocational and technical high school in Turgutlu district of Manisa Province, western Turkiye, on Tuesday morning. Security forces apprehended the suspect.
In a statement, the Manisa Provincial Governorate said the shooting took place outside Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. Police and emergency medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting and the motive behind it.
The incident comes amid heightened attention to school security in Turkiye. On Monday, Turkish authorities held a special meeting attended by the ministers of interior and education and governors from all 81 provinces to discuss measures to enhance security at educational institutions.
The shooting also comes less than two weeks after a security operation across 22 provinces in which 27 suspects were detained over social media posts that authorities said indicated preparations for armed attacks on three schools.
On April 14, an 18-year-old former student opened fire inside a vocational high school in Siverek district of Sanliurfa Province, injuring 16 people, including students, teachers, a cafeteria employee and a police officer. The gunman later took his own life after being surrounded by police.
The following day, a 14-year-old student opened fire inside his middle school with weapons believed to belong to his father, a retired police officer. The attack killed 10 people, including eight students and a teacher, and injured 13 others.
