US President Donald Trump paused on Wednesday the imposition of the new 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods for three days as the two countries firm up a trade deal.
Trump said that this hold allows more time for additional negotiations and, for the time being, avoids an escalation of tensions in the already strained relations between the two countries.
Last month, Trump signed orders imposing 50% tariffs, accusing Canada of engaging in discriminatory treatment against American products, particularly automobiles and dairy products.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that there is still work to be done despite the suspension of the US tariffs.
