China urges Korea not to take sides, blames US policy for Korea tensions

(AFP) China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Republic of Korea not to take sides between Beijing and Washington, saying the US should abandon its “hostile” policy toward North Korea to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.Wang made the remarks in a meeting with South Korea’s National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac in Seoul yesterday, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported, where he also met South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.”The fundamental solution to the tensions on the Korean Peninsula lies in addressing the root causes of the problem and urging the US to abandon its hostile policy toward North Korea,” Xinhua cited Wang as saying.China hopes Korea will “achieve genuine strategic autonomy, refrain from bloc confrontation and taking sides, and develop relations with major powers including China and the US in parallel and without contradiction,” Wang said. The remarks came after US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he plans to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un later this year, adding that the Asian nation held 57 “very powerful” nuclear weapons.Trump had also ordered Pentagon officials to cut short joint military exercises with South Korea, citing his “very good relationship” with Kim. The US has maintained its official stance demanding North Korea to denuclearise, which Pyongyang has consistently rejected. Korea condemned North Korea’s launch of more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles yesterday and ordered its military to maintain full readiness during ongoing joint exercises with the US”China would be glad to see the peninsula move toward peaceful coexistence between Korea and North Korea,” Wang told Wi, calling for a restart of dialogue and restoration of trust. He also invited Wi to visit China, according to South Korea’s presidential office. Wi asked Wang for China’s constructive cooperation in pursuing South Korea’s policy on North Korea, the office said. The South Korean government is trying to resume dialogue with North Korea as well as calling for a phased, pragmatic approach to North Korea’s denuclearisation beginning with a halt to its nuclear programme.In separate talks with Lee, Wang urged Seoul to adhere to a friendly policy towards China, saying bilateral ties had “fully recovered” and made progress this year following meetings between the two countries’ leaders.”A rational, pragmatic, and positive policy towards China is entirely in line with South Korea’s interests and the trend of the times,” he said.Wang also called for an early completion of the second phase of negotiations on their free trade agreement, saying the two countries should promote regional economic integration amid intensifying fragmentation in the global economy and rising trade protectionism, Xinhua reported. Lee told Wang that China and South Korea have achieved tangible results toward a “full restoration” of bilateral ties, pledging to support China’s effort in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen later this year, his office said. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told Parliament that the ministry was pursuing a summit between Lee and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit.  Source…

Egypt Ministers of Investment, Finance to QNA: Qatar, Egypt Open New Horizons of Cooperation

Their Excellencies Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh and Egyptian Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk said relations between their country and the State of Qatar have opened new horizons for bilateral cooperation, paving the way for long-term investments and increased trade and tourism between the two countries. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the seventh session of the Qatar-Egypt Joint Higher Committee, held today in Alamein under the chairmanship of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh stressed the importance of the agreements and memoranda of understanding concluded during the committee’s meetings. These included efforts to establish a joint committee for economic, trade and investment cooperation, as well as Qatar’s participation in investment opportunities in Africa in cooperation with Egyptian companies and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. He noted that the meeting also discussed industrial investment cooperation, including Qatari investment in Egypt through the industrial investment sub-fund of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. He welcomed the recent Qatari investment in the Ras El Hekma area, saying it would further enhance the area’s importance in attracting tourism to Egypt’s North Coast and the country as a whole. HE the Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade also said the two sides discussed sectors targeted for growth in the Egyptian economy, as well as cooperation between financial and business centers in Egypt and their counterparts in Qatar. He expressed optimism about the future of bilateral cooperation, saying it would lead to long-term investments and increased trade and tourism between the two countries. For his part, HE Egyptian Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk told QNA that the committee’s seventh session addressed a wide range of investment and industrial issues, providing an opportunity to strengthen bilateral coordination, as well as coordination on regional issues, within the framework of the ongoing cooperation between the two countries across various fields. In this context, he highlighted the signing of an agreement with Qatar’s Ministry of Finance on cooperation and coordination in areas related to customs policies, the exchange of expertise, and full digital exchange. He said the agreement would enable the two sides to exchange the information required on transactions and new customs policies, contributing to greater efficiency in customs cooperation between the two countries. Concluding his remarks to QNA, HE the Egyptian Minister of Finance said the cooperation aims to reduce costs and accelerate the procedures for exchanging and documenting information and documents in real time, thereby supporting the smooth flow of trade between the two countries.   Source link

Al Sadd start as favourites as Qatar Stars League begins

Al Wakrah and Qatar SC will kick off the 2026-27 Qatar Stars League season on Thursday at Lusail Stadium, while Al Rayyan face newly promoted Lusail at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.The opening round will be played over three days, with all matches taking place at air-conditioned stadiums. Lusail will make their top-flight debut after winning the second division last season to secure promotion.The new season also brings changes to player registration regulations, with teams now allowed to field seven foreign players from a maximum squad of 10 foreign players. All 12 participating teams have completed their preparations and enter the new season with high hopes and ambitions.Al Sadd, the competition’s most successful club with 19 titles and the reigning champions for the past three seasons, will begin their title defence against Al Ahli on Saturday at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.The champions will look to make a strong start under new Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, who replaced Italian Roberto Mancini. Al Sadd will rely on the likes of Akram Afif, Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino and Claudinho, and Spanish striker Rafa Mujica.Al Sadd held their pre-season camp in Austria, where Lucescu worked on preparing the squad for the new campaign, with the team also targeting a strong run in the AFC Champions League.Al Ahli, meanwhile, will be hoping to avoid defeat against the champions and establish themselves as contenders under new Spanish coach Borja Jimenez. The club strengthened its squad during the summer, most notably with the signing of French midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud from Al Duhail.Former champions Al Duhail will face Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday. Al Duhail had a poor season last season, finishing fifth and will be aiming for a stronger campaign as they seek to return to the upper reaches of the table. The Red Knights completed their pre-season preparations in Amsterdam and will be eager to make a strong start.Al Sailiya, meanwhile, are back in the top flight and will look to build on their first season after promotion. They finished 10th last season and have strengthened their squad ahead of the new campaign.Al Wakrah face Qatar SC today, with both teams seeking a positive start to their campaigns.Al Wakrah will be led by Chilean coach Jose Luis Serra, who hopes to guide the team back towards the top after they finished eighth last season. The club held its pre-season camp in France and will rely on players including Egyptian Hamdi Fathi and Tunisian Issa El Aidouni.Qatar SC, coached by Spaniard Marquez Lopez, are aiming for a much-improved campaign after finishing sixth last season. The club last won the league title in 2002-03 and will hope to challenge for honours again.Qatar SC completed their preparations with a training camp in Spain and strengthened their squad with several new signings, including Brazilian Bruno Tabata.Lopez said he was pleased with the team’s preparations ahead of the opener. “I am very happy with the start of a new season, and I am happy with the effort, work and commitment I have seen from the players during the preparation period, as well as the team’s ability to implement the ideas we have worked on,” he said.”During the season, we look forward to implementing what we have worked on, and we hope to succeed in achieving our goals,” he added.Al Rayyan will face Lusail tomorrow at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, with the eight-time champions looking for a strong start after finishing third last season and narrowly missing out on the title.Al Rayyan know their newly promoted opponents will provide a stern test and will need to be at their best under Spanish coach Vicente Moreno.The club is also preparing for its AFC Champions League 2 campaign in September. Al Rayyan have retained the core of their squad, renewing Brazilian striker Roger Guedes’ contract until 2031 and signing Ahmed al-Janahi from Al Gharafa.  Debutants Lusail train ahead ahead of their opener against Al Rayyan. Four killed after being hit by express train in Tokyo

Four workers were killed on Thursday morning after being struck by an express train while carrying out maintenance work on the tracks at a train station in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo.Japanese public broadcaster (NHK) reported that the four workers were on the tracks to remove weeds when the accident occurred on Thursday morning at Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line.The four were taken to the hospital unconscious and were later pronounced dead.Police and firefighters are investigating the details of the incident. QFA President underlines consultation, governance in Asian football system
