Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, who is visiting Egypt, discussed regional issues of mutual concern, particularly the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, in addition to strengthening bilateral relations. At a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart in Egypt, Abdelatty said that their talks reaffirmed complete rejection and condemnation of all violations committed by Israel against the Palestinian people in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in the Gaza Strip, as well as full rejection of any infringement on the rights of the Palestinian people alongside condemnation of settlement expansion in the West Bank. Regarding bilateral relations, the Egyptian Foreign Minister affirmed the importance of enhancing investment cooperation between the two countries, and that it was agreed to strengthen connections between international trade corridors and intensify institutional and technical coordination to help improve regional and international supply chain efficiency. On his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip are living a tragedy, emphasizing that his country is working closely with Egypt on the Palestinian issue and Gaza to achievepeace and stop the war. He also stressed his country’s rejection of all attempts to displace Palestinians from their lands, adding that Israel’s goal is to displace the Palestinian people and Gaza residents. He highlighted the importance of implementing the second phase of the peace plan regarding Gaza, and called on the United States to pressure Israel to stick to the peace plan. The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted yesterday to add an inscription bearing President Donald Trump’s name to the building’s exterior, according to Democratic US Representative Joyce Beatty, a move that could set up a clash with a federal judge who previously ordered his name removed from the facade. “In its meeting today, the board voted to change the front of the building’s facade to read ‘The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump,’ and renamed the physical site ‘the President Donald J. Trump Plaza,'” said Beatty, an ex officio member on the center’s board. A second source with knowledge of the situation confirmed the decision. The New York Times, citing a resolution, reported earlier yesterday “that the center desires to recognize and honor President Trump’s existential and unprecedented contributions to the survival of the center by all legal means”. The board — dominated by Trump loyalists — also voted to close the Kennedy Center for two years, according to Beatty, who sued the Trump administration and the centre over what she called an unlawful name change and the planned closure.The Trump administration in December added Trump’s name to the facade of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. But in May a judge ordered the removal of Trump’s name, ruling that the iconic Washington venue cannot be renamed without an act of Congress.A federal appeals court last month denied the administration’s bid to keep Trump’s name on the building while it pursues court action to restore it. Workers stripped Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center in June.The Trump administration argued that removing Trump’s name would hurt fundraising and worsen the centre’s finances. The appeals court said those claims were not supported by specific facts or evidence.  Source link

(Reuters/File photo) Workers at SK Hynix yesterday launched a new labour union in Republic of Korea, seeking to bring together employees across different job categories and locations as they pursue greater bargaining power at the leading memory chipmaker.The launch comes as SK Hynix and its existing unions are locking horns over annual wage talks, after the chipmaker posted record quarterly profits on strong demand for AI infrastructure.Nearly 2,500 SK Hynix workers have joined the new union, according to its website. The union was formally launched after the government approved an application. SK Hynix has nearly 35,000 employees in Korea.Unlike existing unions organised around particular job categories or workplaces, the new union aims to represent employees across SK Hynix’s operations, including factory workers in Icheon, Cheongju, as well as technical and office staff.Its immediate goal is to become a majority union by signing up more than half of the company’s workforce, which would give it greater influence in negotiations with management.The chipmaker last year agreed with its union to allocate 10% of annual operating profit to employee bonuses in cash under a deal that would remain in place for 10 years.But SK Hynix this year proposed paying a majority of workers’ bonuses in shares rather than cash, after its peer Samsung Electronics agreed on similar terms earlier this year.Park Ji-soon, a social security law professor at Korea University’s School of Law, said the launch could trigger competition among unions for members, as becoming the majority union is key to securing control over collective bargaining.He said a shift towards stock-based bonuses could prompt unions to seek other benefits such as housing loans comparable with those at rival Samsung Electronics.Kim Yong-jin, a management professor at Sogang University, said while workers’ concerns over stock compensation were understandable, given the volatility of Korean stocks, equity-based bonuses were common in the United States.Investors have also questioned whether allocating 10% of operating profit to employees reduces funds available for investment or shareholder returns.In May, Samsung Electronics and its unionised workers agreed on a deal on performance pay, averting a major strike at the chip giant that had threatened to disrupt supplies.Samsung agreed to allocate 10.5% of its annual semiconductor operating profit to special bonuses for chip workers. The bonuses would be paid in company stock, with the immediate sale of over a majority of the shares to be restricted.  Related Story Source link

Air India pilots will undergo mandatory drug screening starting Thursday, according to an internal memo seen by AFP, after a captain involved in a serious mid-air incident reportedly tested positive for marijuana.Existing rules require airlines to randomly test at least 10 percent of their flight crew for psychoactive substances each year.”We have decided to undertake a full screening of all Group pilots for any substances or medications that are not permitted under prevailing regulations,” the memo said.”Testing is mandatory and will start today.”On August 4, at least 24 passengers were injured when an Airbus A320 lost about 300 feet (91 metres) of altitude shortly after departing from Thailand’s Phuket for New Delhi.Local media reports said the main pilot had smoked marijuana and had tested positive in a second confirmatory test. Air India said the results have not been shared with them.Indian investigators have not commented on the reports but said they were closely examining evidence linked to the flight.The inquiry is being supported by Airbus and France’s civil aviation safety agency, the BEA.The incident came as Air India is seeking to overhaul its operations following a string of setbacks.Its reputation suffered a major blow in June 2025 when the London-bound Flight 171 crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, killing all but one of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground.Last week, the airline appointed former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as its new chief executive.  Source link
