Italian teen Curtis breaks women’s 50m backstroke world record for second time

Italian teenager Sara Curtis broke the women’s 50m backstroke world record for the second time in as many days at the European swimming championships in Paris on Thursday.The 19-year-old clocked 26.56sec on her way to gold in the final, a day after lowering the mark with 26.63 in the semi-final to better Australian Kaylee McKeown’s mark from three years ago by 0.23sec.France’s Mary-Ambre Moluh took silver in 27.06 and Britain’s Lauren Cox bronze, 0.59sec off the pace.Curtis adds the world record to the short-course European record she set in the event in Poland last year.It was also her second medal of the championships after she took bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle on Tuesday.”I’m absolutely delighted. It’s hard to come to terms with the emotions of yesterday’s record,” Curtis told Rai.”I struggled to get to sleep last night. I really did try to pick up the pace over the last 15 metres. It’s unbelievable. I’m so happy. A dream, a huge goal.”With both records coming either side of the total solar eclipse on Wednesday, Curtis joked to Sky Sports that she would get the natural phenomenon “tattooed on me” to honour the moment.”I’ve already given myself my 20th birthday present. I hope I can treat myself to more, but world records are the best present I could ever have given myself,” added the Savigliano native, who will celebrate her birthday next week.Earlier, Olympic champion Kristof Milak set a new European record in the men’s 100m butterfly final.Hungary’s Milak clocked 49.48sec to snatch gold ahead of world champion Maxime Grousset of France.Grousset had been leading after the first length but was caught in the final 25 metres finishing in 49.70sec. Swiss Noe Ponti took bronze in 49.93.Milak then showcased his class as he anchored Hungary to gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay in a championship record time of 3min 10.03sec.The 26-year-old’s 46.29sec leg catapulted Hungary to the top of the podium ahead of neutral athletes from Russia in second and Croatia in third.British 18-year-old Filip Nowacki pipped Netherlands’ Caspar Corbeau to the 200m breaststroke title by 0.08sec.The Commonwealth Games champion took gold in a time of 2min 7.70sec, with Corbeau in the silver-medal spot and Austrian Luka Mladenovic rounding off the podium.Barbora Seemanova saw off Marrit Steenbergen to secure 200m free gold in a championship record 1min 54.38sec.It was the Czech swimmer’s career third European gold medal in the event.Dutchwoman Steenbergen took silver at 0.27sec, while Britain’s Freya Colbert claimed the bronze.  Related Story Source link

Former Nepal premier Deuba returns home, faces graft probe

(AFP) Nepal’s former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who faces arrest in a corruption case, returned to the country yesterday nearly six months after leaving for medical treatment abroad.The veteran leader of the opposition Nepali Congress party waved and smiled as hundreds of supporters lined up the streets leading to Tribhuvan airport in the capital Kathmandu.In April, police issued an arrest warrant for Deuba over money laundering charges, making him the latest high-profile figure targeted under the current government of Prime Minister Balendra Shah.Deuba, 80, who left Nepal in February, has denied the allegations against him.The five-term prime minister is set to attend a three-day assembly of his party starting today.Gita Chaudhari, a Deuba supporter, said the former premier “is our guardian and a guardian of this nation”.”We are grateful for the freedom and rights he gave us,” she told AFP, as she waited to welcome him back to Nepal.”With a heart full of gratitude and an open mind ready to embrace the possibilities of change, I have returned to you after five months of medical treatment,” Deuba said in a Facebook post after his arrival.”I return with a deep sense of respect for our shared national responsibility,” he added.”I have returned not to gain power, but to strengthen the national unity.”Nepal police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said Deuba’s case — including any decision to arrest him — is being handled by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation.”We are giving security for him at the airport and to his rally because he is a former prime minister,” Kafle told AFP.Authorities have also issued a warrant for Deuba’s wife, former foreign minister Arzu Rana Deuba.The warrants were issued a month after Shah won a landslide victory on a platform of youth-driven political change, in the first elections since deadly protests in September 2025.Shah’s administration has launched a sweeping crackdown on high-profile political figures since coming to power.Former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-home minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested briefly in March for their alleged roles in last year’s protests.The youth-led uprising was triggered by a brief social media ban but tapped into longstanding frustration over corruption and economic hardship in the Himalayan nation.Protesters set fire to the parliament building and offices, eventually toppling the government.Deuba’s home was among the buildings torched, and videos of protesters attacking the couple circulated widely online. Bundles of cash were reportedly discovered at the property.In his testimony to a commission investigating the protests, Deuba dismissed videos circulating on social media as potentially fabricated.”This is a conspiracy, although I do not know who is behind it,” he said.The commission has recommended further investigation into the cash allegedly found at Deuba’s home and other properties.Deuba’s tenure as president of the Nepali Congress ended in January, after younger members pushed for a leadership change.  Related Story Source link

 Regional powers to form political, military ‘mechanismsJoint military exercises, defence industry cooperation plannedTurkiye participating in meetings for defence of Red Sea shipping Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will group senior ministers, hold joint exercises and deepen defence industry co-operation under a military pact signed between the regional powers last week, Turkiyes defence ministry said yesterday.The three regional powerhouses, alarmed by a regional conflagration that has brought Iranian missile fire onto Gulf oil exporters, signed the “Makkah Joint Defence Agreement” on August 7. They said the accord stipulates that an armed attack against any member would be regarded as an attack on all, similar to Nato’s Article 5 collective defence clause.At a weekly briefing in Ankara, the defence ministry said the pact’s fundamental goal was to ensure defence and military ties were put on a “more institutional and sustainable” footing.”Under the accord, strategic political and military mechanisms plan to be established involving the Defence Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Chiefs of General Staff/Armed Forces Commanders, and that coordination among the three countries will be conducted at the highest level,” it said.The ministry added that joint military exercises involving land, naval, and air forces, as well as air defence and unmanned systems were planned, in addition to deeper defence industry cooperation.”The aim is to provide not only product and system supply, but also joint development and production, technology cooperation, and sustainable maintenance and logistics support,” it said, adding that unmanned and autonomous systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence capabilities would be prioritised.Turkiye, which has Nato’s second-largest army, has said the pact with nuclear-armed Pakistan and top oil exporter Saudi Arabia was open to expansion – with Egypt as a potential candidate – and did not seek to replace any existing alliances.The ministry also said Turkiye was participating in meetings in Jeddah aimed at establishing an international coalition to protect Red Sea shipping. Iran, US make competing claims over Hormuz control

(Reuters) The Strait of Hormuz is “under Iran’s control and management”, the recently appointed head of Iran’s Basij paramilitary unit said yesterday, a day after US President Donald Trump said the United States had “total control” of the strategic waterway.Hossein Taeb said the US had sought to disrupt what he described as the country’s popularity in the region by launching another war in the Strait of Hormuz, but had once more been defeated despite claiming Iran had neither an air force nor a navy.”Today you see that the Strait of Hormuz is under the management and control of the Islamic Republic,” Taeb said, according to the semi-official Fars news. He added that Iran was continuing on its course in complete security.After the start of the war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, Tehran effectively shut the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas was previously shipped.The US subsequently imposed a naval blockade on Iranian shipping and ports, while saying it would protect freedom of navigation for vessels travelling to and from non-Iranian ports.Iran’s joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said later yesterday that no vessel could transit the Strait of Hormuz without Tehran’s permission.”The baseless claims made by the United States regarding the normal passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz … are nothing more than lies and falsehoods,” the command said in a statement published by state media.In June, the two countries reached an interim agreement declaring a permanent ceasefire and calling for a swift return to freedom of navigation in the Gulf.The deal unravelled a few weeks later, with both sides accusing the other of violations. Iran resumed limited attacks on vessels that it said were sailing contrary to the arrangements under the agreement, and the US restarted strikes on Iran’s southern provinces, which Washington said were aimed at degrading Tehran’s ability to target vessels in the Gulf.In a post on X yesterday, Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, said that Mojtaba’s strategy would be “offensive war”, if Tehran’s conditions were not met.”The most enduring path to a new regional order lies in implementing the Hormuz economic-security mechanism, independent of Washington’s military guarantees,” Mokhber wrote, in an apparent reference to an expected deal between Iran and Oman to organise transit through the Strait of Hormuz.Separately yesterday, senior military political official Rasoul Sanaei-Rad said Iran would not reopen the strait unless the other side fulfilled its commitments under the interim deal, adding that the reopening of the waterway was not something the US could achieve unilaterally, according to Fars news.  Source link

Large explosion rips through Italian munitions factory

A powerful explosion ripped through a munitions factory near the town of Colleferro, southeast of Rome, yesterday, with the blast heard for kilometres around.The explosion occurred when firefighters and police were already at the site responding to a fire, local media reports said. No injuries were reported, said the Franco-German defence group KNDS. The plant is operated by KNDS Ammo Italy, which is a subsidiary of the group. “It would have been a tragedy” if the blast had not happened during the summer holiday when the plant was closed, Colleferro mayor Giulio Calamita told reporters. He said efforts were underway to put out the last fires. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated and assessed by the teams on site,” KNDS said in a statement. The plant makes medium- and large-calibre ammunition for land and naval defence systems, as well as solid propellants for aerospace launch vehicles, according to its website.The company is among the contractors on European Defence Agency 155-mm ammunition framework agreements concluded in 2023, EU documents show. Large plumes of smoke rose above the industrial site as emergency services worked, television footage showed.  Source link
