(AFP) Defending champion Ben Shelton shook off a nasty crash into a backcourt hoarding as he steamrolled Learner Tien 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final of the ATP Montreal Masters on Wednesday.Shelton, who won the title in Toronto last year in the ATP Masters 1000 event that alternates between cities, will try to double up in Toronto when he takes on fellow American Brandon Nakashima in Thursday’s title match.Nakashima held off Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 to book his first ATP Masters final.”It means a lot, so many American guys in the mix,” Shelton said.The last all-US pair to battle for a Masters trophy were Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick in 2003 in Cincinnati.Shelton was treated by a trainer in the second set to staunch bleeding from his left elbow and webbing of his fingers.He shook off the discomfort to earn a payback win against Tien, who had beaten him in two previous meetings.”I played four good return points after the timeout, I was not feeling anything except the sting of the medicine,” Shelton said.”I’m super happy with the performance,” added the American, who saved all four break points he faced and won 81 percent of his first-serve points.”Learner presents a lot of problems to my game. He’s a challenge to overcome,” Shelton said. “He can jerk you around the court. I had to play intelligent tennis. The final will be a war and I’ll leave it all out on the court.”Shelton is seeking his fourth title this season after winning on three different surfaces: indoor in Dallas, clay in Munich and grass in Stuttgart.He has beaten Nakashima all five times they have played – including in Toronto last year. Nakashima needed two hours – including 66 minutes in the second set – to subdue Jodar.The Spanish sensation, a finalist in Washington this month and tipped to soon crack the top 10 in the rankings, saved four match points before his opponent fired an ace on his fifth opportunity to prevail in a final game that featured six deuces and lasted more than 10 minutes.”That final game was crazy,” Nakashima, 25, said. “It was super-tight. We both had to keep fighting.”I was lucky I was hitting my spots on serve, it paid off today. I’m happy to get through that one.”Nakashima goes into his first Masters final with growing confidence on serve and with his forehand.”I’m just trusting it and swinging through on every ball,” he said. “When I connect with it, (my forehand) is one of my best shots. I’m happy it paid off today.”Nakashima will be playing the fifth final of his career and by far his most prestigious.He has never before competed in anything more than a 250-level title match.Jodar said he’d take “a lot of positive things” from Montreal as the build up to the start of the US Open on August 31 continues.He said fatigue wasn’t a factor, despite piling up matches in his deep runs in Washington and Canada.”It wasn’t about that. I was feeling good,” he said. “I was trying to play my game the whole match.”He played especially the important points of the match better than me, and that’s one of the reasons why he won the match today.”  Related Story Source…

Bangladesh is intensifying electricity-saving measures as the country grapples with gas shortages, power cuts and the broader fallout from the Iran crisis.Under a government directive that took effect yesterday, shops, markets and shopping malls must close by 8pm (1400 GMT), one hour earlier than previously. Commercial establishments are now permitted to operate only between 11am and 8pm, while hospitals, pharmacies and food-related businesses are exempt.The move comes as natural gas shortages continue to constrain power generation. Limited gas supplies have reduced electricity generation, leaving the national grid facing a shortfall of several hundred megawatts during peak hours and triggering load-shedding in different parts of the country.The situation has been aggravated by the Iran crisis, which has disrupted energy markets and increased volatility in global fuel and LNG prices.Bangladesh, increasingly reliant on imported LNG as domestic gas production declines, is vulnerable to supply disruptions and rising import costs. A recent outage at an LNG terminal further strained supplies, temporarily reducing gas flows to the national grid.The conflict has heightened uncertainty over LNG availability and made securing energy supplies more expensive at a time when Bangladesh already faces a wide gap between gas demand and supply.  Source link

 * Regional powers to form political, military ‘mechanisms ‘* Joint military exercises, defence industry cooperation planned * Turkiye participating in meetings for defence of Red Sea shipping Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and ‌Pakistan will group senior ministers, hold joint exercises ‌and ⁠deepen defence industry ‌cooperation under a military ‌pact signed between the regional powers last week, Turkiye’s defence ⁠ministry said on Thursday. The three  Muslim US allies, alarmed by a regional conflagration that has brought Iranian missile fire onto Gulf oil exporters, signed the “Mecca Joint Defence Agreement” on August 7. They said the accord stipulates that an armed attack against any member ​would be regarded as an attack on all, similar to NATO’s Article 5 collective defence clause. At a weekly briefing in ‌Ankara, the defence ministry ⁠said the pact’s ​fundamental goal was to ensure defence and ​military ties were put on a “more institutional and sustainable” footing.”Under the accord, strategic political and military mechanisms plan to be established involving the Defence Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Chiefs of General Staff/Armed Forces Commanders, and that coordination among the three countries will be conducted at the highest level,” it said.   The ministry added that joint military exercises involving land, naval, ‌and air forces, as ‌well as air defence ⁠and unmanned systems were planned, in addition to deeper ⁠defence industry cooperation.”The aim ⁠is to provide not only product and system supply, but also joint development and production, technology cooperation, and sustainable maintenance and logistics support,” it said, adding that unmanned and autonomous systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence capabilities would ​be prioritised. Turkiye, which has NATO’s second-largest army, has said the pact with nuclear-armed Pakistan and top oil exporter Saudi Arabia was open to expansion – with Egypt as a potential candidate – and did not seek to replace any existing alliances. The ministry also said Turkiye was participating in meetings in Jeddah aimed at establishing an international coalition ‌to protect Red Sea ​shipping. Germany’s Robert Koch Institute for disease control announced Thursday that around 12,500 people have died as a result of heatwaves that swept the country this year.According to a new report, the institute recorded the highest heat-related death toll this year between April 6 and August 2, surpassing figures from previous years, particularly 2018 and 2019, which also saw unusually high temperatures and significant numbers of heat-related deaths.The report noted that 9,400 people died from heat in 2018, while the figure reached around 7,700 in 2019. Older people were the most vulnerable, with approximately 6,300 deaths among those aged over 85, more than 3,100 among those aged 75-84, around 1,900 among those aged 65-74, and about 1,200 among people under 65.The institute also recorded nearly 9,600 heat-related deaths in a single week, from June 22 to 28, when temperatures reached the 40°C range across large parts of Germany.The estimates were based on mortality data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, along with data from 52 weather stations operated by the German Meteorological Service. The Qatar Stars League (QSL) has announced schedule for Qatar Cup 2026, the tournament's rescheduled edition which was previously announced for 2025-2026 season.The tournament will feature the top four clubs from final standings of 2025-2026 season Doha Bank Stars League – Al Sadd, Al Shamal, Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa.The two semifinal matches are scheduled for September 1, 2026. Khalifa International Stadium will host the match between Al Sadd and Al Gharafa, while Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium of Al Sadd club will host the match between Al Shamal and Al Rayyan.QSL has also set the date for the final match, to be played on December 11, 2026, at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.According to the tournament regulations, if any match ends in a draw after regulation time, penalty kicks will be used to determine the winner.  Source link

Colonists stormed on Thursday the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, heavily protected by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF).WAFA news agency said that dozens of colonists, led by extremist colonist leader Yehuda Glick, stormed the eastern area opposite the Dome of the Rock and performed Talmudic rituals in the courtyards of the mosque.The blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque has been subjected to repeated incursions by colonists, under the protection of the IOF, amidst escalation and continuous violations against the Palestinians and their holy sites.
