Debris is left behind in Union City following a tornado that hit several cities in rural southwest Michigan. – AFP Tornados tore through the central United States in a series of storms that continued into the weekend, leaving eight people dead and at least a dozen others injured, authorities said.Four people were reported killed in Oklahoma, where the twisters gained strength, and four others died further north in the Midwestern state of Michigan.The Branch County Sheriff’s Office said a tornado touched down near Union City in southern Michigan on Friday, killing three people and injuring 12.About 50 miles (80km) west, officials in Cass County said one person was killed and “several injuries” were reported after a tornado hit the area.”Our thoughts are with those who have lost family, friends, and property during this incident,” the Branch County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.Authorities in Cass County said a number of trees had fallen onto roads and buildings, and more than 500 people were reported to be without power.”Emergency Management personnel will be conducting damage assessments in the affected area as required by the State of Michigan,” the local sheriff’s office said.Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Friday evening that she was activating a state emergency operations centre “to co-ordinate an all-hands-on-deck response to severe weather in southwestern Michigan”.In Oklahoma, the extreme weather led to fourth deaths late on Thursday and Friday, and people were waking up Saturday to scenes of destruction and loss in several towns across the state.”Severe weather struck Major County last night and tragically claimed the lives of a mother and daughter,” Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt posted on X.Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said in a statement that two people died in a tornado that hit the town of Beggs on Friday night. Bahrain’s Defense Force announced that its air defense systems have intercepted and destroyed 86 missiles and 148 drones since the start of Iranian attacks targeting the kingdom.According to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), authorities urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to exercise maximum caution for their safety. Multiple casualties, widespread destruction as Israel strike towns South, East of Lebanon
Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes at Saturday dawn targeting several towns in southern and eastern Lebanon, resulting in deaths, injuries, and widespread destruction of homes and property. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the targeted areas.The Lebanese health ministry announced that the death toll from the Israeli airstrikes and clashes in the town of Nabi Sheet in the Baalbek district of the Bekaa Valley has risen to 26, in addition to massive destruction in the town’s neighborhoods, squares, and streets.Also in the Baalbek district, Lebenese news agency reported, Israeli warplanes targeted a house in the Daher al-Sawan area of the town of Shamshtar at dawn today. A displaced family from the city of Baalbek had taken refuge in the house. The attack completely destroyed the building and killed all members of the family: the father, mother, and their four children.In the south, Israeli warplanes committed a massacre in the town of Jebchit. An airstrike at dawn today targeted a house, killing six people, including four members of the same family, after completely destroying the building.Later that morning, Israeli warplanes launched a second, more intense attack targeting the town square. This caused widespread destruction, drastically altering the landscape. Dozens of shops, restaurants, and butcher shops were destroyed, along with the municipality building, several apartments, and a number of cars.Israeli aircraft also carried out two airstrikes on the towns of Shahour and Tayr Dibba in the Tyre district. No further information is yet available regarding the extent of the damage or casualties.Rescue and civil defense teams are continuing their operations in the targeted areas to remove rubble and transport the wounded. Turkiye has introduced Emergency and Defense Planning departments across all government ministries, except the Ministry of National Defense, which remains the primary authority responsible for implementing the policy.According to Turkish media reports, the new units will oversee and coordinate preparations related to war readiness, disaster response, civil defense and national mobilization.Heads of the departments have been appointed, with the decisions published in the Official Gazette and signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.The departments were established under a decree issued in October 2025 and will also be responsible for ensuring the flow of information to the presidency and coordinating related measures within affiliated institutions. The death toll from the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has risen to 72,123 martyrs in addition to 171,805 wounded since October 7, 2023.The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip stated in a statement today that hospitals in the Strip received three martyrs whose bodies were recovered in the past 24 hours, in addition to the wounded. A number of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, as ambulance and civil defense teams have been unable to reach them so far.The statement added that the total number of martyrs since the ceasefire last October has risen to 640, while the total number of injuries has reached 1,707, and the bodies of 753 martyrs have been recovered from under the rubble.
