Egyptian President warns of impact of rising regional tensions on security and stability

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi warned on Monday of the consequences of escalating regional tensions on security and stability of the region and livelihoods of its peoples, as well as the economic impacts of the ongoing conflict, particularly on prices, especially energy, and on navigation in the Red Sea.During his meeting in Cairo with President of World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, President El Sisi outlined Egypt’s efforts to contain regional tensions and reaffirmed his country’s consistent position of calling for resolution of regional crises through peaceful means, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.He noted that Suez Canal Authority revenues had lost about 10 billion USD due to the war in Gaza over recent years.For his part, the President of World Bank Group highlighted ongoing coordination between the two sides to implement several development projects across various sectors, including social protection, health, food security, education, and climate change mitigation.   Source link

World Cup tickets: Huge demand and sky-high prices

From almost $900 for the opening game to over $8,000 for the final, match tickets are far from cheap for the World Cup which begins in North America in 100 days. AFP Sport assesses the cost of attending games at the tournament: How many tickets, how much demand?According to world football's governing body FIFA, almost 7mn tickets have been made available in total. Each person can buy a maximum of four tickets per match and a total of 40 for the whole competition.Around 2mn tickets were sold during an initial lottery in October. A second sales phase in December and January was also a lottery and attracted a record 508mn requests, according to FIFA. It has not said how many tickets have been attributed but the matches in highest demand were the Group K finale between Colombia and Portugal in Miami on June 27, co-hosts Mexico against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, and the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Prices skyrocketThere will be a total of 104 matches played at this expanded World Cup, the first ever to feature 48 teams, and ticket prices have soared for the most in-demand games. Fan group Football Supporters Europe said the North American bid had initially promised tickets would be available from as little as $21, but instead the cheapest tickets to go on sale have been for $60, for example for the Group J opener between Austria and Jordan at the Levi's Stadium in California.Most tickets cost at least $200 for matches involving leading nations, while the cheapest tickets for the final cost $2,000 and the best seats $8,680 – that is before taking into account FIFA's official resale site, where one category three seat for the game at the MetLife Stadium on July 19 was being advertised for an eye-watering $143,750, over 41 times its original face value of $3,450.FIFA president Gianni Infantino insists ticket prices are simply a consequence of the huge demand. ‘In the US in particular there is this thing called dynamic pricing, meaning the prices will go up or down’, depending on the match in question, he said.Having faced sustained criticism over prices, FIFA announced a cheaper category of tickets, but those seats available for $60 were reserved for fans of qualified teams and would make up just 10 percent of each national federation's allotment.FIFA has also put on sale packages combining match tickets with access to VIP lounges. For France against Senegal in New Jersey on June 16, those packages cost between $2,900 and $4,500.FIFA is keeping aside an unspecified number of tickets which it will make available from April until the end of the tournament ‘on a first come, first served basis’.Then there are the resale platforms, including FIFA's own official site. But this controversial fan-to-fan market allows resellers to determine prices themselves, hence the huge price advertised for a final ticket.The resale market is unregulated in the United States and Canada. In Mexico, reselling a ticket above face value is prohibited, but only when the ticket is purchased in Mexico using the local currency. A ‘category three’ seat – the highest section of the stands – for the tournament's opening game between Mexico and South Africa at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium on June 11 was recently listed at $5,324, compared to an original price of $895. Other sites such as SeatGeek and StubHub were selling tickets at slightly lower prices.Extra costs-It is not just the ticket prices that travelling supporters need to consider. The price of parking is also through the roof at many World Cup stadiums, which are often situated well away from the downtown areas of host cities. A space in a parking lot for a group game in Atlanta costs $100, while the price is $300 in Los Angeles.An alternative for visiting fans who do not have match tickets is to go to one of the Fan Festivals in and around the 16 host cities. The Fan Fest in Kansas City will be able to welcome up to 25,000 people. In New York, the US Open tennis venue at Flushing Meadows will be transformed into a fan zone holding up to 10,000 paying visitors, albeit only from June 17 to 28.  Source link

IAEA says no indication of Iranian nuclear facilities hit by US‑Israel attacks

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said Monday that the agency has no indication that any nuclear facilities in Iran were hit by the US and Israeli airstrikes, stressing that the situation in the Middle East is “very concerning”.Grossi, at the start of an extraordinary meeting on the Iranian file, reiterated his call for all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation, amid the US and Israeli offensives on Iran and Iran’s missile attacks in response.He added that contact efforts with Iranian nuclear regulators are underway, but without any response so far, expressing hope that this essential communication channel can be re-established soon enough.The extraordinary IAEA meeting, requested by Russia, ahead of the nuclear watchdog’s regular Board of Governors session, which includes 35 countries, at a time when the region is witnessing a large-scale escalation of military tensions.The IAEA, tasked with monitoring Iran’s nuclear program, confirmed last Saturday that it is closely observing developments in the Middle East, calling on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid any nuclear risks that could threaten the region’s population.  Source link

Jordan announces partial, temporary closure of Airspace

Chief Commissioner and CEO of the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC), Capt. Daifallah Alfarajat, announced Monday that Jordan has partially closed its airspace to all inbound, transit, and outbound flights in the wake of the unfolding regional developments, to assess the risks based on the highest international standards.Alfarajat clarified that this procedure will be enforced on a daily basis, with the closure effective from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day, adding that this decision shall be enforced starting from tonight until further notice in pursuit of ensuring the safety and security of civil aviation in Jordanian airspace.  Source link

Lebanon Government announces ban on security and military activities of Hezbollah

The Lebanese government announced an immediate ban on all security and military activities of Hezbollah, considering them illegal, and called for the group to surrender its weapons to the state, limiting its work to the political sphere within constitutional and legal frameworks.The Lebanese Cabinet, in a statement, expressed absolute rejection, without any ambiguity, of any military or security operations launched from Lebanese territory outside the framework of legitimate state institutions. It stressed that the decision on war and peace rests solely with the state, which requires the immediate prohibition of all security and military activities of the group as they are considered illegal, and the obligation to hand over its weapons to the Lebanese state.It instructed all military and security agencies to take immediate measures to implement the decision and prevent any military operations or launching of missiles or drones from Lebanese territory, and to arrest violators.The council also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intensify diplomatic contacts with the international community and other countries to halt the Israeli aggression on Lebanon and implement relevant international resolutions.   Source link

EU doesn's expect immediate impact on oil supply from Iran war

Death toll from the Israeli aggression on Gaza rises to 72,097

The death toll from the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, has risen to 72,097 martyrs in addition to 171,796 wounded.The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip stated Monday that the Strip’s hospitals received one martyr and five injuries in the past 24 hours, while a number of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, as ambulance and civil defense teams have been unable to reach them so far.It said that the total number of martyrs since the ceasefire last October has risen to 630, and the total number of wounded to 1,698, while the bodies of 735 martyrs have been recovered from under the rubble.  Source link

Germany will not participate in military operations in Middle East, FM Wadephul says

Germany has announced on Monday that it will not participate in the ongoing military operations in the Middle East region.The German government has no intention to participate in the military operations against Iran, said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, before adding that Germany has no bases in the Middle East like Britain, which has allowed the US to access its bases in order to destroy Iranian missiles and missile launch platforms.Wadephul added that Germany has no appropriate means, as the nation certainly has no intention to engage in any kind of these operations, clarifying that it is possible for German troops to defend themselves when they are under attack, but there would never be any other measures beyond that on the part of Berlin.Germany has small military units in two nations in the Middle East.  Source link
