A protest in Austria yesterday against noise and pollution blocked one of Europe’s most important highways connecting Germany and Italy but early reports showed traffic disruptions were not as bad as feared.The Brenner Pass links northern and southern Europe, with the Austrian stretch providing trans-Alpine access into Italy.Communities in Austria’s western Tyrol province have long complained about traffic on the route, especially trucks passing through the province.Several thousand protesters gathered on a stretch of the road at Matrei am Brenner on Saturday, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.”We want to send a message to Brussels, to the federal government in Vienna, that things absolutely cannot and must not continue like this with the constantly increasing traffic here,” organiser Karl Muehlsteiger told AFP ahead of the protest.”This has been an issue for a very, very long time. It’s been dragging on for years,” said Muehlsteiger, who is the mayor of Gries am Brenner.”It is no longer manageable for the population, no longer bearable,” he added, saying pollution, noise and traffic jams were plaguing local communities like his along the highway.To make space for the protest, authorities closed part of the highway and surrounding roads to all transit traffic from 11:00am local time (0900 GMT) to 7:00pm.Austria’s motoring club OeAMTC had warned of the possibility of “extensive traffic jams” and advised drivers to avoid travelling through Tyrol that day.But the OeAMTC said on Saturday morning that there were “no significant traffic jams at all” and that “so far it has been very quiet”.The German motorists’ association ADAC also said there were no traffic jams on the German side.However, Italian train operator Trenitalia reported massive disruptions to rail traffic on the Brenner to Verona line during the protest due to a “malicious act by unknown persons”.Lorry traffic through the Alpine Brenner Pass has increased to the point that more than 2.4 mn vehicles used it last year, according to mobility organisation VCOe.This compares to a total of 860,000 trucks passing through neighbouring Switzerland via four transit routes, VCOe added.In 1991, only 900,000 lorries used the Brenner Pass, according to road statistics.Austria has for years been at loggerheads with the European Commission, which has said any ban on heavy goods lorries (HGVs) risks disrupting EU road traffic.In 2023, the European Union’s top court suspended an Austrian order banning heavy goods lorries from a stretch of the highway.Austria has been in dispute with its EU neighbours over the environmental impact of HGV traffic ever since it joined the bloc in 1995.  Source link

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth struck a measured tone towards China at a major defence forum on saturday, noting “rightful alarm” over Beijing’s military build-up but saying Washington sought a “stable equilibrium” in Asia.Hegseth’s headline speech at Singapore’s Shangri-La Dialogue, which brings together top defence officials and experts from about 45 countries, contrasted with his strongly confrontational remarks on China at last year’s gathering.It came as Donald Trump struggles to resolve the Middle East war — which has caused oil prices to soar, hurting major Asian economies — and after the US president met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping against the perennial background of tensions over Taiwan.”When we look across the region today, there is rightful alarm regarding China’s historic military build-up and the expansion of its military activities in the region and beyond,” Hegseth said.Washington does not seek “needless confrontation” but rather “a genuinely stable equilibrium (in Asia) that works for Americans as well as our allies”, he said.That means “a favourable but durable balance of power in which no state, including China, can impose its hegemony and hold the security or prosperity of our nation and our allies in question”, according to Hegseth.Unlike Beijing, which has sent a panel of military experts and scholars instead of Defence Minister Dong Jun for the second year running, Hegseth is leading a bumper US delegation to the event that provides chances for both open debate and closed-door diplomacy.The Pentagon chief said the US sought “respectful” and “good-faith” engagement with Beijing, adding: “I wish my counterpart was here at this conference, but I look forward to other options when we can cross paths.”Major General Meng Xiangqing, the head of the Chinese delegation, said following the speech that “stable US-China relations are not only good for both peoples, but also good for regional stability and global peace”.Trump visited China this month, talking up “fantastic” trade deals but giving few details and later suggesting Washington could use its arms sales to self-ruled Taiwan as a bargaining chip with Beijing.There had been “no change” in Washington’s stance towards Taiwan, but “any decision about future Taiwan arms sales… will rest with” Trump, Hegseth said.His remarks about the regional state of affairs contrasted sharply with last year’s event, when Hegseth painted China as a potentially “imminent” threat to security and outlined a swaggering vision of muscular American deterrence.Chinese delegate Da Wei, director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, told AFP this year’s address was “much more moderate”.However, he said Hegseth’s depiction of a hegemonic China was “ironic… given what the US is doing in Iran and has done in Venezuela.”US delegate Tammy Duckworth, a Democratic senator and Trump critic, said Hegseth’s remarks were overly conciliatory towards China.”I worry that this administration is being distracted into wars that they’ve started in other parts of the world at the expense of our commitment here in the Indo-Pacific,” she told reporters.Instead of Dong, China has sent experts and scholars from its army’s academic institutions, led by Meng of the National Defense University.Analysts have said Dong’s no-show reflects Beijing’s confidence as an established power with little inclination to answer publicly for its assertive moves in the region.Some argue, however, that China is also running the risk of having no senior policymaker present if two major security issues come up: reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and Beijing’s claim to Taiwan.Hegseth praised nations including South Korea, Japan, Australia and the Philippines for boosting their defence spending, while threatening consequences for nations that “free-ride”.”Those days are over. Allies who refuse to step up and carry their own weight for our collective defence will face a clear shift in how we do business.”Hegseth’s remarks came as a peace deal between the US and Iran to end their war remained elusive.A White House official told AFP on Friday that Trump, who is weighing a final decision on a potential accord, would only commit if Iran met all his conditions.But Iran has said “no final agreement” is in place, and its state media has rebutted parts of Trump’s characterisation of the deal.Hegseth said Washington was “more than capable” of restarting the war if it wanted.Separately, Hegseth and his British and Australian counterparts announced that they would team up under their AUKUS security alliance to develop payloads for undersea drones.  Source link

A Palestinian man succumbed to his wounds on Sunday after being injured in an Israeli airstrike near the Firas market in central Gaza City.The Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), citing medical sources, reported that the man had been wounded in the attack on the area before succumbing to his injuries.The death toll from the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, has risen to 72,819, with 172,894 wounded.Israeli forces continue to violate the ceasefire agreement by carrying out further assassinations, artillery shelling, airstrikes, and heavy gunfire in various areas of the Gaza Strip.  Related Story Source link

The Indian government announced a reduction in export duties on gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel for two weeks, effective Monday, June 1. In a statement, the government said that the export duty on gasoline has been set at 1.5 rupees, ($0.0158) per liter, while the duty on diesel is 13.5 rupees per liter, and 9.5 rupees per liter on jet fuel. It added that these duties are subject to review every two weeks, based on the average global prices of crude oil, gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel during the period following the last review. This move is part of India’s periodic pricing mechanism, which aligns export duties on fuel with global market developments and energy prices. ( Source link

Medical sources in the Gaza Strip reported that 929 Palestinians have been martyred since the ceasefire agreement, announced on Oct. 10, 2025, came into effect.According to Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), citing the same sources, 247 children and 191 women were among those martyred, reflecting the continued impact of the conflict on civilians.The sources stated that April was the deadliest month since the ceasefire began, with approximately 117 fatalities recorded during the month, compared to 79 fatalities in March. They added that the pace of bombardment and the number of casualties continued to rise rapidly throughout May.The sources warned that the health sector in the Gaza Strip is facing catastrophic conditions due to the ongoing blockade and restrictions on the entry of medicines and medical supplies, a situation that is further worsening the suffering of patients and the injured.  Source link

Germany has initiated talks with France on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence, as part of the defense and strategic coordination mechanism announced by the two countries last March.Local sources reported that the first round of talks began in Paris, while a second round of talks is expected to be held in Berlin before summer holiday.A statement by the German Chancellery explained that Berlin and Paris agreed on executive steps for the Nuclear Steering Group, including taking concrete steps during the current year, as Germany will participate in French nuclear exercises, and several joint visits to strategic facilities will take place, in addition to the two countries’ participation in developing the nuclear defense capabilities of other European countries.Germany will participate for the first time in this type of training next September, with its participation initially being in the form of an observer role. In the later stages, the German army will provide strategic support that is not directly related to nuclear weapons.The joint German-French declaration stressed that the new cooperation does not aim to replace NATO’s nuclear deterrence, nor the nuclear participation arrangements to which Germany contributes, but rather to complement them, while the two countries continue to adhere to international law, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.The declaration also stressed that German-French cooperation is based on commitment to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty and Article 42, paragraph 7, of the European Union Treaty, and aims to strengthen European security as a whole, paying particular attention to coordination with the United States, the United Kingdom, and the rest of the allies.Last March, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron announced the establishment of a high-level nuclear steering group, to be a bilateral framework for defense dialogue and coordination of strategic actions, including consultation on the appropriate combination of conventional capabilities, missile defense, and French nuclear capabilities.  Related Story Source link

Israeli air force launched new airstrikes on various areas in southern Lebanon on Saturday, killing three people and injuring several others.According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, an Israeli drone strike targeted the town of Jibchit, killing one person, while another strike targeted the town of Loubiyeh in the Sidon district, killing one person and injuring another.The Agency added that an Israeli drone also struck the town of Ansar, killing a paramedic and wounding four other people.According to the latest official figures, the death toll from the Israeli military campaign in Lebanon has risen to 3,371 people, with an additional 10,129 injured.
