Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi affirmed, during talks with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Yvette Cooper, that the signing of the Joint Statement concluding the negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the GCC and the United Kingdom (UK) marks a new phase in the GCC-UK relations.During the discussions, the two sides reviewed GCC-UK bilateral relations and exchanged views on the latest regional developments. The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution supporting strong action to combat climate change, despite US diplomatic efforts to to have the measure withdrawn.The General Assembly, comprised of 193 member states, adopted a non-binding resolution endorsing the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice last July, which stated that countries’ failure to protect the planet from the effects of climate change constitutes a violation of international law.In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “this is a powerful affirmation of international law, climate justice, science, and the responsibility of states to protect people from the escalating climate crisis.”Over 140 countries voted in favor, 8 against, and 28 abstained.The United States, Russia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, along with other countries, opposed the resolution. Climate change is primarily caused by emissions from burning coal, oil, and gas.The resolution calls on countries to adopt national climate plans aimed at limiting global temperature rise to well below 1.5 degrees Celsius, to phase out subsidies for the exploration, production, and exploitation of fossil fuels, and to urge countries responsible for climate damage to provide compensation.The resolution is part of international efforts to achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which set a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius on global warming compared to pre-industrial levels.The initial draft of the resolution included more stringent provisions based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, including a call for the establishment of an international register of climate damage. Al Arabi SC Wednesday won the Sports and Youth Excellence Award for the 2025/2026 season at a special ceremony attended by leaders of sports clubs, youth centers, and prominent institutions active in sports and youth development. He noted that the award has evolved beyond an annual recognition program into a comprehensive national framework that motivates institutions and individuals to adopt best practices and elevate performance standards based on quality, sustainability, and innovation. Karim Rizkallah claimed a dramatic victory in Round 3 of the Qatar Karting Championship (QKC) after edging Victor Litaudon by a razor-thin margin of just 0.031 seconds in the Grand Final at Lusail International Circuit on Tuesday night. Competing on the 1.124km Lusail track, Rizkallah completed the 12-lap race in 12 minutes 49.943 seconds, narrowly holding off Litaudon in one of the closest finishes of the season. Rizkallah also clocked the fastest lap of the race at 1:02.886.Litaudon stayed glued to the leader throughout the race and crossed the line only fractions behind in 12:49.974, while Alfie McElroy secured third place after finishing 5.320 seconds off the pace.Felice Carena delivered another consistent performance to finish fourth, with championship leader Tameem Hassiba rounding off the top five after a solid drive that helped him strengthen his position in the standings.Following three rounds, Hassiba continues to lead the championship with 60 points, having collected 25 points in Round 2 and 10 in Round 3 after his opening-round tally. An economic impact assessment conducted in partnership with Nielsen Sport – a leader in sports analytics, underscored the tournament’s role as a primary catalyst for tourism in Qatar in 2025, contributing towards a surge in revenue across travel, hospitality, and retail sectors. The tournament’s strong global appeal attracted 305,015 fans from outside Qatar, resulting in QR288.9mn spent on flights, QR315.5mn spent on accommodation, and 1.5mn room-night bookings during the tournament period. From these international attendees, 97% believed that the tournament had a positive impact on Qatar. FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 LOC CEO, Jassim al-Jassim, said: “Mega-sporting events such as the Arab Cup, continue to serve as key drivers for economic growth and diversification in the country, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Throughout the competition, the LOC offered a comprehensive suite of media services at the Main Media Centre and a dedicated Broadcasting Hub in Souq Waqif, a gathering hotspot for fans during the tournament. This resulted in robust tournament and host country coverage, generating QR241mn in media value. In addition, social media engagement across major platforms drove QR24.6mn in economic impact. The FIFA Arab Cup was part of a record-breaking football season in Qatar, which also saw the country host the first 48-team FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025. Taiwan's opposition lawmakers made a failed bid Tuesday to impeach President Lai Ching-te, after the number of votes in favour of the motion fell well short of the minimum required.Lai and his Democratic Progressive Party have been locked in a bitter conflict with the two opposition parties that control the parliament since he took office in May 2024.Lawmakers from the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) launched impeachment proceedings after Lai and his premier refused to sign off on a revenue-sharing bill passed by parliament.Both sides have accused each other of violating the democratic island's constitution.Opposition legislators have described Lai as ‘dictatorial’. DPP lawmaker Wu Szu-yao said Monday the KMT and TPP ‘are co-ordinating with external hostile forces to manipulate Taiwan's political struggles.’Fifty-six lawmakers supported impeaching Lai and 50 were against it. The number of votes in favour was below the minimum two-thirds of the 113-seat parliament needed for the motion to succeed.Premier Cho Jung-tai vowed Tuesday to ‘continue to push for reconciliation and coexistence’ with the opposition parties.But divisions remain deep.
