Reigning champions PSG will host Newcastle at the Parc des Princes. (Reuters) Holders Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool are among the clubs battling for direct passage to the last 16 of the Champions League going into the final round of the league phase this week. Fifteen teams have already sealed their progress to the knockout rounds but a further 17 sides will be competing for the remaining places with all 18 games kicking off at the same time Wednesday. The top eight receive a bye into the last 16 while the next 16 teams enter Friday’s draw for the play-offs, although PSG demonstrated last season that is no obstacle to lifting the trophy. Here is a look at what’s at stake on matchday eight: Qualified for last 16Arsenal, with seven wins from seven, and Bayern Munich are the only two clubs already assured of a place in the last 16. The Gunners could become the first team to win all eight games since the league phase was introduced last season. They host Kairat Almaty, who are bottom of the table with just a single point. Bayern’s lone defeat in Europe came at Arsenal in November. Vincent Kompany’s side go to PSV Eindhoven in their final fixture. Knockout place guaranteedReal Madrid, record 15-time winners of the competition, will wrap up a last-16 berth with victory away to Jose Mourinho’s Benfica. Liverpool will join them if they beat Qarabag at Anfield, while Tottenham know victory at Eintracht Frankfurt will allow them to also bypass the play-offs despite their domestic struggles. Eight teams – those placed sixth to 13th – are locked on 13 points, with reigning champions PSG hosting Newcastle at the Parc des Princes. Chelsea currently occupy the final top-eight spot but face a tricky assignment at Napoli, coached by former Blues boss Antonio Conte. Barcelona and Manchester City are ninth and 11th respectively. They are poised to sneak into the top eight if any of the teams above them slip up. At least PSG or Newcastle, if not both, will drop points. Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid and Atalanta are also in the mix, while Inter – who have lost three matches in a row – and Juventus sit on 12 points. All of those clubs will progress from the league phase regardless of Wednesday’s results. On course for knockoutsBorussia Dortmund are all but certain to advance alongside Galatasaray. Azerbaijan’s Qarabag are on track to reach the knockouts for the first time after a last-gasp win over Eintracht last week. Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco, PSV, Athletic Bilbao and Olympiacos round out the top 24 as it stands, but there are seven clubs beneath them who could force their way back into contention. Teams in dangerItalian champions Napoli are the most notable team at risk of missing out on the knockout phase. They are 25th – behind Olympiacos by virtue of fewer goals scored. FC Copenhagen also have eight points but head to Barcelona for their final match. Benfica and Ajax, both former European champions, must win to stand a chance of qualifying. The same is true for Club Brugge, Bodo/Glimt, Pafos and Union Saint-Gilloise. EliminatedDebutants Kairat and Villarreal have lost six of seven matches. Slavia Prague are also yet to win, while Eintracht sacked coach Dino Toppmoeller earlier this month after a poor run of results both in Germany and Europe.  Related Story Source link

Hybrid-electric vehicles dethroned purely petrol-powered cars as the top power option among consumers in Europe last year, data showed Tuesday.Some 1.88 million new vehicles were registered in 2025 in the European Union, an increase of 1.8 percent from the previous year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). New car sales “remain well below pre-pandemic levels”, however, the trade association said in a statement.Despite the only modest overall sales growth, consumers continued to shift towards hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. Sales of hybrid-electric vehicles climbed by 13.5 percent last year to account for 34.5 percent of total sales in the EU last year, putting them ahead of petrol cars at 26.6 percent. Meanwhile, sales of battery-electric vehicles jumped by 30 percent to account for 17.4 percent of overall sales, although the ACEA noted the gain was from a weak performance in 2024 and needs to rise further to stay on track with the EU’s transition goals.Sales of plug-in hybrids also rose, but sales of petrol and diesel vehicles dropped. The combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 35.5 percent, down from 45.2 percent in 2024.Volkswagen Group saw sales rise by 5.5 percent last year to increase its lead as the top-selling carmaker in Europe. France’s Renault saw similar growth, but Stellantis — which owns several European brands such as Peugeot and Fiat — saw sales slide by 4.7 percent.Chinese carmaker BYD tripled its sales in the EU last year, although from a small base. China’s SAIC Motor, which owns the MG brand, saw sales rise by a third.Sales of Teslas fell by nearly 38 percent last year as the electric car brand has suffered reputational damage in Europe from its association with billionaire Elon Musk, who backed US President Donald Trump before afalling-out, and who has endorsed Germany’s far-right AfD party. Climber Alex Honnold waves from the top of Taipei 101 after successfully free soloing the building  An American climber took on Taiwan’s tallest building yesterday, becoming the first person to scale Taipei 101 without a rope, harness or safety net.Hundreds of spectators gathered at the base of the 101-storey tower to watch Alex Honnold, 40, embark on his daredevil feat, which was also broadcast live on Netflix. After an hour-and-a-half, he successfully made it up 1,667 feet before triumphantly rappelling down to reunite with his wife, Sanni McCandless Honnold. Speaking at a press briefing afterwards, Honnold said “time is finite”, and people should “use it in the best way”. “If you work really hard… you can do hard things,” Honnold added. Honnold has conquered some of the world’s most intimidating rock faces and rose to global fame in 2017 after he climbed Yosemite’s “El Capitan”, lauded among his peers as the pinnacle of technical difficulty on the massive granite monolith. It had always been a dream of Honnold’s to add scaling Taipei 101 to his list of achievements he told reporters, adding that his first request had been rejected. He did not offer more details about why this was the case.  Source link

The number of victims of the Israeli occupation’s aggression against the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, has soared to 71,660 fatalities and 171,419 injuries.The enclave’s hospitals received three new fatalities, including a martyr whose body had been recovered, and 20 injuries in the past 24 hours, while several victims are still languishing under the rubble and on the streets, as paramedics and rescuers have been unable to reach them, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported in a statement Monday.The statement added that since last October, the fatality toll has reached 486 Palestinians, with 1,341 others wounded, while 714 bodies have been dug out from the rubble.  Related Story Source link

 Bangladesh yesterday said it was “surprised” and “shocked” that India had allowed fugitive former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to make a public address in New Delhi. Hasina, 78, fled to neighbouring India in August 2024 after a student-led uprising ended her 15-year rule. She made her first public speech since then in an audio address in Delhi on Friday. “The government and the people of Bangladesh are surprised and shocked,” Dhaka’s foreign ministry said. “Allowing the event to take place in Delhi and letting mass murderer Hasina openly deliver her hate speech… constitute a clear affront to the people and the government of Bangladesh.” –   Source link

A Palestinian man was martyred on Monday by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip, according to medical sources.The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that the Israeli occupation forces fatally shot the man in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, northeast of Gaza City.In a separate incident, a girl was injured by Israeli army fire west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, WAFA added.Israeli violations have continued since the ceasefire came into effect on October 11, resulting in 484 deaths, 1,321 injuries, and the recovery of 713 bodies.  Related Story Source link

A “Baggy Green” cap worn by Don Bradman during a series against India ‌in 1947-48 was sold ‌for $460,000 at a ‍Gold Coast auction Monday, fetching the highest price for a cap sported by ‍the great Australian batsman. Bradman had gifted it to Indian cricketer Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni, whose family preserved it for the last 75 years. “That’s over three ‌generations under lock and key. If you were a family member you ‍were only allowed to look ‌at it when you were 16 years old for five minutes,” said Lee Hames, the chief operating officer of Lloyds Auctioneers and Valuers. The cap was sold to an anonymous bidder and will be kept on display ​at an Australian ‌museum, local media reported. The cap, which has ‍the names “D.G. Bradman” and “S.W. Sohoni” inscribed on the inside, is in good condition. Another cap worn by Bradman was sun-faded and insect-damaged ​when it fetched $311,000 at auction in 2024. Widely regarded as the greatest batsman in history, Bradman played 52 tests with a batting average of 99.94, nearly 40 runs higher than any other player.  Source link

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China.”We have no intention of doing that with China or any other non-market economy,” he told reporters on Sunday in Ottawa. “What we’ve done with China is to rectify some issues that have developed in the last couple of years.” Carney said that under the continental trade pact, known as CUSMA, Canada cannot pursue free trade agreements with non-market economies – ones driven more by government than market forces without prior notification. Carney’s remarks come one day after US President Donald Trumpآ threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffsآ on Canada if it goes through with a trade deal with China. ( Source link
