The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said Sunday that more than 230 journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip, affirming that Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world for journalists and humanitarian workers.Lazzarini explained that the ban on the entry of international journalists into Gaza contributes to the escalation of disinformation campaigns and the spread of polarized narratives, and forecloses efforts aimed at conveying the reality of the humanitarian situation on the ground. He stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of media access and protecting journalists in accordance with international humanitarian law. The continued targeting of journalists and humanitarian workers constitutes a serious violation of international laws, Lazzarini stressed, calling for the provision of the necessary protection for them and for enabling media organizations to carry out their duties without restrictions. Since the beginning of the war, international journalists have been banned from entering Gaza independently, which is fundamental to media freedom. (   Source link

The spotlight turns today to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which is hosting the General Assembly meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). During the meeting, the leadership of OCA, the continental sports body behemoth, will be handed over to the State of Qatar, represented by His Excellency the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, ushering in a new era of development for Asian sports. Taking on the mantle of OCA’s hierarchical leadership, HE Sheikh Joaan is set to herald a new phase of prosperity for this long-standing Asian sports institution, based on an ambitious Qatari strategy that aims to achieve sustainable development through the organisation of state-of-the-art green sporting events, as well as digital transformation that broadly bets on integrating AI and cutting-edge technologies in athletes’ performances and sports facilities management. The Qatari presidency will mark the culmination of OCA’s pathway, which was established 77 years ago. Its headquarters is located in the State of Kuwait. Interestingly, the establishment of this council was the product of a long odyssey to advance Asian sports, starting with the creation of the Asian Games Federation and culminating in the formation of OCA, the largest continental sports body. This was achieved through two historic phases that shaped the contours of the sporting landscape across the largest continent in the world. The idea of organising alternative Asian Games, replacing the previous Far Eastern and West Asian Games, was proposed by the Indian Guru Dutt Sondhi, then President of the Indian Olympic Committee. Subsequently, the Asian Games Federation was founded on Feb 13, 1949, during a meeting held at Patiala House in New Delhi, India. The sublimest objective of this federation was to unify Asian athletes under one banner, and it discharged its responsibility of organising the Asian Games since their first edition in 1951. The Federation undertook this role for over three decades. With the need to advance the organisational structure and keep abreast of growing sports ambitions, a decision was taken to dissolve the federation, especially following the emergence of feuds and standoffs among the member states, triggering the urgent need for a sports authority with greater powers capable of controlling the Asian sports arena. The OCA was officially established on Nov 16, 1982, during the 9th Asian Games in New Delhi, becoming the sole legitimate representative of Asian National Olympic Committees. It comprises 45 member countries and organisations and is responsible for overseeing sport in Asia and co-ordinating member activities on both regional and global stages. Its mandate extends beyond the Asian Games to include the Asian Winter Games, with both events held every four years. Since its establishment, OCA has been spearheaded by key sports figures who shaped the course of Asian sport and strengthened Asia’s standing within the international Olympic movement. History records the late Kuwaiti Sheikh Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah as the spiritual founder of the Council, having led the transition from the Asian Games Federation to the OCA. As the first President, he laid strong institutional foundations and selected Kuwait as the permanent headquarters until his death in 1990. Following the passing of Sheikh Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah, Roy de Silva of Sri Lanka assumed the role of Acting President of OCA during a transitional period from 1990 to 1991, playing a vital role in maintaining OCA’s cohesion and ensuring the continuity of its activities amid one of the region’s most challenging political crises. He was succeeded by Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahad al-Sabah of Kuwait, who served as President of OCA from 1991 to 2021, marking the longest and most influential presidency in the Council’s history. During his three-decade tenure, OCA evolved into a major continental sports institution, with the launch of the Asian Indoor Games, Asian Winter Games, and Asian Beach Games, alongside strengthened Asian influence within the International Olympic Committee. In September 2021, Sheikh Ahmed stepped down, and Randhir Singh of India assumed the position of Acting President. Although Sheikh Talal Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah was elected President in July 2023, Singh remained Acting President following the Executive Board’s endorsement of the IOC Ethics and Compliance Commission’s recommendation to annul the 2023 election results. In September 2024, Randhir Singh was elected President of OCA for a four-year term, becoming the first Indian to hold the post. However, due to health issues, he chose not to complete his term, prompting the opening of nominations for an early presidential election on July 15, 2025, for which HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani emerged as the sole candidate, making his assumption of the presidency a matter of time. During its 77-year-long journey, OCA has proven day after day its role as a powerful driving force for Asian sports, committing itself to strengthening Olympic values and providing a fair and motivating competitive environment for millions of Asian athletes.  The number of victims of the Israeli occupation’s rampage on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, has soared to 71,657 fatalities and 171,399 injuries.The enclave’s hospitals received three new fatalities and eight injuries in the past 24 hours, while several victims are still languishing under the rubble and on the streets, beyond the reach of paramedics and rescuers, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported in a statement Sunday. The statement added that since last October, the fatality toll has reached 484 Palestinians, with 1,321 others wounded, while 713 bodies have been dug out from the rubble. French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday vowed to speed up the legislative process for a social media ban on under-15s, with the goal of enacting it in September this year. “I have asked the government to activate the accelerated procedure so it can go as quickly as possible,” he said in a self-recorded video broadcast on BFM Television. He said he wanted it to be “applied from the start of the next school year”, in September. French lawmakers have been debating the bill for such a ban, following in the footsteps of Australia, which last month became the first country to prohibit children under the age of 16 using such popular – and addictive- platforms as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Their draft legislation is to be submitted to the French parliament on Monday. Macron said that, on top of a ban on children under 15 accessing social media, he also backed a ban on pupils having on mobile phones in schools.  Source link

The Saudi delegation to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026 today observed a series of announcements aimed at addressing urgent global challenges.  Her Royal Highness Ambassador Reema Bandar Al-Saud, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United States of America, announced that Saudi Arabia will host the first Global Coral Reef Summit in 2026, bringing together global leaders, scientists, and investors to drive solutions for the protection and recovery of coral reef ecosystems.   The summit will address key challenges and policy and regulatory gaps, develop science-based solutions, and advance sustainable financing and investment mechanisms to scale coral reef protection and recovery.   Building on the call for constructive dialogue in an era of fragmentation, His Excellency Ahmed A. Alkhateeb, Minister of Tourism, said: “Tourism brings peace at a time when it’s needed – connecting people and encouraging dialogue. Tourism growth is good for peace, it’s good for people, good for youth, and good for women.”  On the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a global hub for AI, His Excellency Abdullah A. Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, commented: “Saudi Vision 2030 was about economic diversification and empowering youth. Fast forward to today and we’ve achieved 56% non-oil contribution to GDP, and in terms of talent and youth, our tech force has increased dramatically.”  Earlier in the day, HUMAIN and the National Infrastructure Fund (“Infra”) announced a Strategic Financing Framework Agreement of up to $1.2 billion to support the expansion of AI and digital infrastructure projects in the Kingdom. The agreement outlines non-binding financing terms for HUMAIN’s development of up to 250 MW of hyperscale AI data center capacity.   The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16 Presidency also launched the Business4Land (B4L) Champions’ Council. This high-level coalition brings together CEOs, sustainability leaders, investors, and policymakers to accelerate land restoration, combat land degradation, and strengthen drought resilience.   The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources (MIM,) in collaboration with WEF, announced the Lighthouse Operating System, a country-level framework designed to accelerate manufacturing transformation. Developed in partnership with WEF’s Advanced Manufacturing and Production Centre (AMPC), this initiative aims to diversify the Kingdom’s economy, build robust non-oil industries, and position Saudi Arabia as a global hub for advanced manufacturing and logistics.  MIM and WEF announced a cooperation agreement on the sidelines of the Future Minerals Forum, which took place the week before the WEF Annual Meeting. The agreement runs until September 2027 and aims to unify efforts to strengthen partnerships around critical minerals required for energy and other technologies, contributing to the assurance of resilient, sustainable, and responsible mineral supplies aligned with industrial objectives and the energy transition. According to the agreement, the initiative will be overseen by a joint executive committee comprising representatives from the ministry and WEF.  Source link

 A gas explosion at a high-rise residential building in New York City triggered a massive fire on upper floors, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others, authorities said.The explosion occurred in a 17-story apartment building after reports of a gas odor on the 15th and 16th floors. Firefighters were already on the scene investigating the reports when the blast occurred, sparking a fast-moving quad-alarm fire that engulfed several upper-floor apartments. Chief of Department John Esposito said firefighters had been checking complaints of a gas smell when the explosion caused significant structural damage. About a dozen apartments were damaged, with active fires reported in 10 units on the 16th and 17th floors. Officials confirmed that one person was killed in the incident. Another victim was critically injured, five sustained serious injuries, and eight others suffered minor injuries. Authorities said the building had recently undergone renovations and that work on the natural gas system had been completed and inspected. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation Source link
