The Saudi Royal Court yesterday announced that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud had left King Faisal Specialist Hospital after reassuring medical tests, QNA reported from Riyadh. The Royal Court issued the following statement yesterday: “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud left King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, on January 16, 2026, after completing medical examinations. The results were reassuring.” Source link

UK, Portugal shut their embassies in Tehran

 Portugal announced yesterday a “temporary” closure of its embassy in Tehran, citing a “context of tension”, and advised its nationals not to travel to Iran. Portugal’s foreign ministry said in a statement that eight Portuguese citizens had already left Iran, and others were preparing to do the same. Another 10 Portuguese passport holders, including seven dual nationals, had decided to remain in the country, the ministry said. On Wednesday the British embassy in Tehran was temporarily closed. “We have temporarily closed the British embassy in Tehran, this will now operate remotely. Foreign Office travel advice has now been updated to reflect this consular change,” a UK government spokesperson said.Britain’s ambassador and all consular staff were evacuated based on a security assessment and a decision to prioritise staff safety, a British official said. – AFP/Reuters  Source link

Yemen PM quits, replaced by FM

 The prime minister of Yemen has been replaced by his foreign minister after the premier submitted the government’s resignation, the country’s Saudi-backed presidential body said. Prime Minister Salim Saleh BinBuriek met Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi and “submitted the government’s resignation to pave the way for the formation of a new government”, a statement published by news agency Saba, said. The presidential council posted on state media that foreign minister “Dr Shaya Mohsen Zindani is appointed prime minister and tasked with forming the government”. The statement published on Saba cited “efforts to restore state institutions, strengthen the unity of sovereign decision-making” and “defeating the coup” as reasons for the premier’s resignation.  Source link

Ethiopian runners dominate at ’26 Doha Marathon by Ooredoo

Tamirat Tola bags the event’s top award, followed by compatriots Asefa Boki and Boki Diriba.  Ethiopian runners dominated the 2026 Doha Marathon by Ooredoo yesterday, clinching top honours in both the men’s and women’s elite races as thousands of participants took part in the prestigious sports event.The men’s race was led by reigning Olympic champion Tamirat Tola, who confirmed his status as one of the world’s premiere marathoners by winning in 2:05:40. He controlled the pace from the front and spearheaded an emphatic Ethiopian clean sweep of the top five positions. Tola was followed closely by compatriot Asefa Boki, who finished second in 2:05:55, while Boki Diriba claimed third in 2:06:26. Fellow Ethiopians Dinkalem Ayele (2:06:43) and Balew Yihunle (2:07:07) rounded out the top five, highlighting Ethiopia’s depth in elite distance running. The dominance extended beyond the podium. Eritrea’s Oqbe Kibrom Ruesom finished sixth in 2:07:55, while Ethiopia returned to the fore with Mulugeta Debasu (2:09:49) and Desalegn Girma (2:10:43) placing seventh and eighth, respectively. Kenya’s Nicholas Kirwa secured ninth place with a time of 2:10:56, ensuring representation from East Africa’s traditional marathon powerhouses. In the women’s elite race, Ethiopian runners were equally formidable. Tigist Gezahagn clinched victory in 2:21:14, leading an Ethiopian sweep of the top three. She was followed by Tigist Girma, who finished second in 2:22:33, and Muluhabt Tsega in third with 2:23:21. Both Girma and Tsega arrived in Doha with strong personal bests and proven international credentials, and their performances secured their standing among the world’s leading marathon athletes.  Kenya’s Amana Mursi Kipyatich finished fourth in 2:23:43, while Ethiopian runners filled positions five through ten, led by Roman Gidey (2:25:29) and Alemtsehay Mekuria (2:26:18), further highlighting Ethiopia’s overwhelming presence in the women’s field. The event also drew thousands of participants from across Qatar’s diverse communities, blending world-class sport with mass participation. International endurance runner and Paralympian Richard Whitehead was also among the field, completing his 101st marathon, a milestone that drew widespread admiration.(Sources: https://www.watchathletics.com and https://www.olympics.com)  Source link

Birla Public School celebrates 22nd Annual Sports Day

 Birla Public School (BPS) successfully hosted its 22nd Annual Sports Day for Kindergarten and Primary students at the Aspire Dome on January 10.The event brought together the stakeholders of Birla Public School for a day filled with enthusiasm, discipline and memorable performances. Femi Seun Ogunode, an Arab and Asian champion and World bronze medallist, was the chief guest. The event was formally declared open by Indian ambassador to Qatar Vipul. Also present at the opening ceremony were members of the school management and leadership, including Gope Shahani, management representative Chindhu Antony, principal Dr Anand Nair, vice-principal Edna Fernandez, the headmistresses of the Kindergarten and Primary sections, and the headmaster of discipline and activities. The programme commenced with a welcome by the sports captains of Primary 1 and Primary 2, followed by the opening ceremony. The march past featured the four student houses — Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune — along with the Student Council members, Cubs and Bulbuls, Beavers and Brownies. This was followed by the oath-taking ceremony, led by the Sports and House Captains of the Primary section, In a symbolic tribute to the Olympic spirit, director Gope Shahani passed the ceremonial torch to the school’s young sports achievers. The torch was carried forward by 10 student achievers. The event culminated in the presentation of prizes and medals to outstanding performers and winning teams. The event ended with the announcement of the individual champions and the march past winners, followed by a vote of thanks proposed by the Sports Vice-Captain of the Primary section. The Annual Sports Day 2025-26 was formally closed by the principal, who handed over the school flag to Albert Anthony, HOD of the PhysicalEducation Department.  Source link

Deprived of heating, Kyiv enters survival mode to beat big freeze

After running her stiff fingers along the keys, Ukrainian piano teacher Yevgenia retreated to her fort of mattresses and sheets to shelter from the cold reigning in her Kyiv flat.Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country would declare a “state of emergency” in its energy sector, battered by massive Russian strikes and buckling as temperatures dip as low as -20C.A Russian barrage of drones and missiles last week left half of the Ukrainian capital without heating, prompting mayor Vitali Klitschko to call on residents to temporarily leave the city if able to do so.Six days later, some 300 apartment buildings still lack heating and the capital is facing prolonged emergency rolling blackouts, imposed by the authorities to ration precious supplies.In Yevgenia’s flat, the temperature was hovering at a chilly 12C.The heating in her building connected to city’s electric grid gets cut off with every blackout, as backup batteries do not have the capacity to take over.”We’ve been without power for 12 hours,” she told AFP. “And that’s not even the worst scenario.”Every hour without power, the temperature in her living room dropped further.”With each passing day, we’re getting closer to zero.”‘To break people’Equipped with her flashlight and with her cat by her side, Yevgenia slipped into a pocket of warmth inside the apartment: a makeshift mattress castle.The temperature inside reached 24C.”This idea came to me Thursday at midnight,” said the 32-year-old, surprised at its effectiveness.”I just wanted some kind of feeling, I don’t know, of safety, of childhood.”Russia has pummelled Ukraine’s energy grid each winter since invading in February 2022, attacks Kyiv says are designed to hurt civilians.”This is an attempt to break people,” Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of Kyiv-based Energy Industry Research Study Center told AFP.He accused Russia of trying to drive major cities “into a man-made disaster, into an absolute crisis.”Right now the situation is the most difficult of the entire war in terms of energy supply and heating in several major regions,” he added.In Kyiv, the glow of car headlights and runners’ headlamps dotted the otherwise frozen, blacked-out city streets after sunset.The sound of Russian attack drones mixed with the low hum of power generators.But residents dared not look up to check the threat from above, their gazes fixed on the path ahead to avoid slipping.People exercised by candlelight in gyms, got their hair cut by the light of headlamps, and scanned supermarket shelves using the light from their mobile phones.Without electricity in homes, fridges served as shelves and balconies as freezers.No ‘disaster’The city has also set up large, heated tents where hot meals are distributed. But amid the crisis, politics has also been at play. Zelensky has blasted city officials for the response.”Far too little has been done in the capital”, he said in a video address on Wednesday.Mayor Klitschko, a political rival and former heavyweight boxing champion, has hit back.Such statements “diminish the selfless work of thousands of people,” he said on Telegram, denouncing messages of “hate” directed at him.Zelensky has ordered an urgent increase in the volume of electricity imports to help put the lights back on.Yevgenia, meanwhile, was waiting for winter to end in her blanket fort, flanked by her phone, her power bank “and the kitty, of course.””The cat is priceless,” she said.  Related Story Source link

US ‘monitoring Iran closely’, slaps sanctions

 US. President ‌Donald Trump ‍is closely monitoring the situation ‍on the ground in Iran, White ‌House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt ‍said yesterday, adding Trump and his team have warned Tehran ​there ‌would be “grave consequences” ‍if — according to Washington — killings linked to ​its crackdown continue. It also imposed sanctions yesterday on Iranian security officials and financial networks, accusing them of orchestrating a violent crackdown on peaceful protests and laundering billions in oil revenues. Among those sanctioned is Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council for National Security, whom Washington accused of coordinating the crackdown and calling for force against protesters. Four regional commanders of Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces and Revolutionary Guard were also sanctioned for their roles in the crackdown in Lorestan and Fars provinces.  Source link
