FIFA President Gianni Infantino: AFP FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Saturday he has scrapped a plan to allow private investment in the World Cup following fierce backlash from football officials worldwide. “Our purpose has always been — and will always be — to unite and improve,” Infantino said in a statement. “As a result, this proposal will not proceed.” FIFA, world football’s governing body, had floated the plan on Tuesday, saying it could raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for a new FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary it proposed to run events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup. It said that, if approved, the project could provide each of FIFA’s 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million. The Asian Football Confederation, which represents 47 member nations, welcomed the plan’s withdrawal on Saturday. Any initiative that may impact global football should be “presented and discussed with the Confederations, the FIFA Council, Member Associations (MAs) and other stakeholders in a timely, transparent and meaningful manner,” the Kuala Lumpur-based body said in a statement. The Mexican Football Federation also welcomed the move, saying that “unity among all the Confederations and Federations has been prioritised for the good of football”. Earlier this week, European football’s governing body UEFA said none of its national teams would participate in any FIFA competition “for so long as these proposals remain alive”. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and North American and Caribbean federation (CONCACAF) also condemned the move. “The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product,” UEFA said in a statement. “No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.” Pressure mounted on Infantino on Friday with the resignation of senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro, who called the idea “a bad deal for FIFA’s member associations, a bad deal for football, and a bad deal for the long-term future of the game”. South American confederation CONMEBOL, whose president Alejandro Dominguez is regarded as a close ally of Infantino, demanded further information on the “scope, structure, governance and potential effects” of the project. – ‘Created divisions’ -In the late-night statement announcing the plan was dead, Infantino said the project was conceived as a means of strengthening member associations, and that it would only have gone ahead if a majority supported it. “Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” he said. FIFA had tried to fend off the critics, saying in a statement early Friday that it would continue consultations with member associations and insisting that “nobody is selling football”.But the pressure mounted, and not just within the football community. A day after the European Union praised UEFA for “defending the integrity of the game,” UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Friday that Infantino was “the wrong man” to lead FIFA. The beleaguered Infantino said he would focus now on restoring harmony while continuing to grow the game.”Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,” he said. Kuwait’s armed forces said Saturday they had intercepted hostile drones after the country came under an Iranian attack.  The General Staff of the Armed Forces said air defence systems had intercepted the hostile drones and urged the public to follow safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.  The latest incident came a day after Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence said the armed forces had intercepted and destroyed hostile drones that entered the country’s airspace early Friday. A wildfire in southern Germany was burning out of control on Saturday as strong winds hampered firefighters’ efforts to contain the blaze, local authorities said.The fire broke out in a forest near Freudenberg, in the Amberg-Sulzbach district of Upper Palatinate, Bavaria. About 330 emergency personnel have been deployed to battle the blaze, authorities said.Officials said strong winds have fueled the fire, while rugged terrain has hampered firefighting efforts and allowed the blaze to spread beyond containment.The blaze comes amid a wave of extreme weather sweeping across Europe, with Spain, France and Greece battling destructive wildfires fueled by scorching heat.  Source link

Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun condemned yesterday the ongoing violations and attacks carried out by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, particularly the bombings targeting infrastructure and archaeological sites listed as World Heritage sites. He emphasised that these attacks have caused significant damage and serious repercussions affecting most villages in the south.In a statement issued by the Lebanese Presidency, Aoun said, “The massive explosions that rocked Beaufort Castle today, generating seismic waves equivalent to a 3.8-magnitude earthquake according to the National Center for Geophysics, represent a highly dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of existing commitments. They also pose a direct threat to the progress made under the framework agreement, to which Lebanon has committed.” He added that the timing of the attacks, on the eve of the scheduled meeting in Rome to continue discussions on implementing the tripartite framework, sends negative messages and undermines international efforts to stabilise the situation. He called on the sponsoring parties and the international community to assume their responsibilities and take action to end these violations, which threaten the chances of progress in the diplomatic process and undermine security and stability in southern Lebanon. It is worth noting that Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement under US auspices that stipulates security arrangements and the redeployment of the Lebanese army in the south, as well as measures to rebuild the affected areas, revive the Lebanese economy, establish direct communication channels between the two sides, and take confidence-building measures as a prelude to lasting peace. The 11th Local Dates Festival at Souq Waqif continues to attract large numbers of residents, with shoppers flocking to the venue to buy freshly harvested Qatari dates directly from local farms. This trend, it is learnt, highlights a sustained public interest in homegrown produce and support for the country’s agricultural sector.Running until August 10 at Souq Waqif’s Eastern Square, the festival has become a busy marketplace where visitors browse a wide selection of locally grown dates, compare varieties and prices, and purchase directly from growers.   The event, organised by the Ministry of Municipality in co-operation with Souq Waqif Management, brings together 125 local farms – the largest participation since the festival was launched in 2016 – offering varieties such as Khalas, Khunaizi, Shishi and Barhi, along with seasonal Qatari fruits including figs, papaya, limes and almonds. Since its launch on July 25, the festival has seen busy aisles, shoppers examining neatly packaged dates, and families exploring traditional displays decorated with palm fronds and fresh date clusters, highlighting its appeal as both a marketplace and a cultural attraction. According to the Ministry of Municipality, the festival forms part of ongoing efforts to support local farmers, promote Qatari agricultural products and encourage consumers to purchase locally grown dates.   It also provides producers with an opportunity to market their harvest directly to consumers, improving returns while strengthening links between farms and the public. The festival comes as Qatar continues to strengthen domestic agricultural production. The Ministry of Municipality said national date production reached approximately 24,000 tonnes in 2025, supported by technical assistance, pest-control programmes, improved irrigation technologies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and productivity of date palm cultivation.   Dates remain one of Qatar’s strategic agricultural crops and an important component of the country’s food security strategy. The ministry added that Qatari dates are promoted through local agricultural markets, retail outlets and annual events such as the Local Dates Festival, allowing farmers to showcase and sell their produce at competitive prices while increasing consumer awareness of local products. The festival’s popularity mirrors the steady expansion of Qatar’s agricultural sector.  The 11th Local Dates Festival at Souq Waqif’s Eastern Square, running until August 10, showcases a wide variety of locally grown dates…
