The Israeli occupation continued its attacks on southern Lebanon on Tuesday, violating the ceasefire that began on April 16.The Lebanese National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes launched three airstrikes on the town of Zawtar Al-Sharqiyah in the Nabatieh district. Meanwhile, a number of people remain missing following an airstrike on the town of Haris in the Bint Jbeil district, southern Lebanon.In a related development, Israeli warplanes also attacked the town of Jabal Al-Batoum in the Tyre district, while occupation forces fired heavy machine guns in Bint Jbeil.On another note, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced today that four people were killed and 51, including three children, were injured in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon Monday night.By continuing its strikes on southern Lebanon, the Israeli entity is violating the 10-day ceasefire that began on April 16 and was later extended for three weeks last Friday.  Source link

(Reuters) British lawmakers will vote on whether embattled Prime Minister Keir Starmer should face a parliamentary probe over the Peter Mandelson scandal, the House of Commons speaker announced yesterday. Members of Parliament will debate today on whether to refer Starmer to a committee to consider if he misled parliament over the appointment of the former associate of the late convicted US criminal Jeffrey Epstein, Lindsay Hoyle said. It is the latest development in an unrelenting scandal that has plagued Starmer’s government for months and led to calls for him to resign. Hoyle added that his decision followed requests from “numerous” lawmakers, including opposition Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch, Hoyle added. Badenoch has accused Starmer of misleading lawmakers by insisting “due process” was followed ahead of the 2024 appointment of Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the US despite having failed his security vetting. Starmer has sacked the most senior civil servant in the foreign ministry for not telling him or other ministers that Mandelson had not passed the checks. He has also denied claims that his office applied pressure on the foreign ministry to approve the appointment. Starmer commands a large majority in the lower house of parliament, meaning that lots of MPs from his ruling Labour party would have to vote for an inquiry for one to be launched. A spokesman from the prime minister’s office called the debate “a desperate political stunt by the Conservative party”, insisting that “their claims have no substance”. The Privileges Committee was responsible for former prime minister Boris Johnson’s exit from frontline politics after it investigated him for misleading parliament over the so-called “partygate” breaches of Covid-19 laws.He quit as an MP in 2023 before the committee published a report recommending his suspension.Starmer sacked Mandelson in September 2025 after a fresh batch of revelations over the latter’s friendship with Epstein came to light.UK police are currently investigating Mandelson over allegations he committed misconduct in office while serving as a Labour minister more than a decade ago by leaking information to the late disgraced financier.  Source link

Defending champions Al Sadd beat a dogged Al Shamal 3-2 on Monday to retain the Qatar Stars League (QSL) crown. Playing in front of a partisan crowd of 12,324 fans, captain Akram Afif and his powerful side dominated proceedings in both halves to clinch the QSL crown on home soil at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. It is Al Sadd’s 19th QSL title win and third in a row. Even a draw would have sealed the fate in favour of points leaders Al Sadd but they looked for goals from the get-go.   A plucky effort from Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Al Sadd’s first goal was followed by a slick strike from Brazilian Roberto Firmino two minutes later. Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah scored the first goal for Al Shamal in the 65th minute. Brazilian left-back Paulo Otavio added Al Sadd’s third goal two minutes later. Colombian Jeison Murillo Ceron scored off a penalty for Al Shamal in the 85th minute. Al Sadd, who signed Italian coach Roberto Mancini last November, clearly looked like a much stronger side against Al Shamal in the final match of the 2025-26 season. Former AFC Champions League winners, Al Sadd – backed by a vociferous crowd Monday – ended a satisfying season with 45 points from 22 games. Al Shamal, who were seeking their first QSL title, finished the league in second spot with impressive 40 points. Al Rayyan (38 points) finished third followed by Al Gharafa (36) in fourth.   Speaking after the title triumph, Mancini, 61, said Monday: “First of all, I would like to congratulate the players, the technical and administrative staff, and Al Sadd fans on this important title. Winning the league for the third consecutive time is not easy; it is the result of daily hard work and great commitment from everyone within the team. From the beginning of the season, we knew the challenge would be difficult, but the players showed strong character and a winning mentality that helped us overcome every obstacle.” A TENSE START FOR BOTH TEAMS The match got off to a tense start for both sides. Qatar national team player Tarek Salem of Al Sadd made a poor clearance in the third minute, allowing the ball to go for the game’s first corner. As the battle gathered steam, Bounedjah got elbowed by his former Al Sadd teammate Boualem Khoukhi in the third minute. Qatar national team skipper Afif seconds later found Brazilian teammate Firmino with a long ball from the left flank but Al Sadd’s Brazilian import failed to connect from close range. In the eighth minute, keeper Meshal Barsham easily collected a weak header from Algerian star and Al Shamal skipper Bounedjah inside the Al Sadd box after an assist by Waad. Both teams looked a little rough in the first 10 minutes even as Al Sadd skipper Afif gestured to his players to calm down. In the 15th minute, Al Shamal’s Spanish midfielder Alex Collado controlled the ball for about 20 yards, then unfurled a powerful shot from the edge of the Al Sadd box but the ball missed the target. A minute later, Al Sadd’s Otavio drilled a low shot from close range, but Al Shamal keeper Babacar blocked his effort. Shortly afterwards, the script changed for Al Sadd. Al Sadd’s Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After a short dribble past Musaab Khidir, Afif aimed at the goal with a low shot from inside the box but Al Shamal defender Omid Ebrahimi deflected the ball into his own net. With celebrations barely dying down in the stands after the first goal, Al Sadd doubled the lead through Firmino in the 22nd minute. Firmino latched on to a short pass from Claudinho and slipped a low ball to the right of Al Shamal keeper. Shortly after the half-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Mohamed Naceur Manai produced a slick bicycle kick from the edge of the box but Al Sadd keeper Barsham smartly collected the ball. In the 38th minute, Al Sadd could have scored their third goal but Claudinho’s powerful shot from inside the box hit the Al Shamal goalpost and ricocheted away. In injury time, Bounedjah was a fraction of a second late on a close-range shot, but Al Sadd’s Otavio blocked the move.   In the last move of the first half, Bounedjah’s header from very close range – following a set piece situation – went above the Al Sadd crossbar. Four minutes into the second half, disaster struck Al Shamal when Algerian defender Abdessamed Bounacer received a red card from 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound referee Mohammed al-Jassim for a tackle on Afif. In the 56th minute, Firmino rifled in a powerful shot that narrowly missed the Al Shamal crossbar. Seconds later, Brazilian forward Giovani also took a long-range shot that keeper Babacar smartly parried away. At the one-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Omar Mohammed aimed with a left-footed drive from an acute angle inside the box but his shot slipped past the Al Sadd goalpost from close range. Bounedjah, the untiring Algerian, reduced the deficit for Al Shamal with a solo run of about 30 yards into the Al Sadd box. With Agustin Silvera shadowing Bounedjah, the Algerian quickly took aim and slipped the ball past a charging Barsham in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Otavio delivered a low left-footed drive that went past Al Shamal keeper Babacar much to the delight of coach Manicini and the Al Sadd dugout. Al Shamal scored their second goal when Jeison Murillo converted an 85th-minute penalty. In other results Monday, Al Rayyan cruised to a 4-0 victory over Al Arabi while Al Duhail narrowly edged out Qatar SC with a 2-1 win. Al Wakrah defeated Al Sailiya 3-1 and Al Ahli also won 3-1 on the road against Umm Salal. Meanwhile, the clash between Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya ended in a 1-1 draw. The flow of Iraqi fuel oil shipments through Syrian territory towards the port of Baniyas in Tartus governorate on the Mediterranean Sea constitutes a qualitative step that paved the way for a strategic corridor for oil flows towards the Mediterranean.Director of Corporate Communications at the Syrian Petroleum Company Safwan Sheikh Ahmad said that this step reflects Syria’s return to playing an important role as an energy corridor in the region, and the country’s preparedness for operational capabilities.He explained that the ongoing transport operations are carried out according to an integrated logistics system that currently relies on land transport via dedicated tankers, where the receiving, unloading and storage operations are organised within prepared facilities, leading to re-pumping via the Baniyas outlet.He revealed that the transition to the level of pipelines, including historical projects such as Kirkuk-Baniyas, requires broader arrangements, in addition to infrastructure rehabilitation and modernisation works. He also pointed out that this route provides direct revenues related to transit and storage services.Ahmad noted that Syria has a unique geographical location that qualifies it to be a pivotal energy corridor towards the Mediterranean Sea. With the development of infrastructure and the strengthening of partnerships, this role can be expanded to include a wider range of transport and export operations in light of the regional need to diversify supply routes and enhance their reliability.Director of Local and International Relations at the General Authority for Ports and Customs in Syria, Mazen Alloush, echoed similar views pertaining to the latest developments. Alloush explained that the procedures included simplifying and standardising customs transactions, adopting dedicated routes so as to ensure convoys reach their destination with high efficiency and without registering obstacles.He pointed out that the authorities faced several challenges due to the damaged infrastructure they inherited from the previous regime. For example, Al Tanf crossing, which is the passage through which Iraqi fuel convoys pass needed comprehensive rehabilitation. Despite this, he said that things are smooth as the authorities are addressing these challenges through continuous maintenance. Alloush added that the Authorities are working in light of regional changes to implement a strategic vision to enhance Syria’s role as a regional energy transit corridor, through developing the infrastructure of border crossings in parallel with rehabilitating ports and modernizing their operational infrastructure, introducing modern operating systems and increasing capacity, adopting advanced operating models, as well as developing the customs work system in line with international standards. He noted that Syria has a pivotal strategic location on the regional energy transport map, with its geographical advantages and logistical infrastructure that qualify it to play an active role in transporting and exporting Iraqi oil and the oil of other countries to the Mediterranean Sea. He pointed out that reactivating this role in light of the current changes serves common economic interests and enhances opportunities for regional integration. Concluding his remarks to QNA, Alloush stressed the Authority’s commitment to providing a safe and efficient transit environment that supports trade and energy in the region, and contributes to consolidating Syria’s position as a key player in the regional energy equation.  Source link

A Syrian court conducted the first hearing Sunday in the trial of ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad and senior figures from his government, one of whom appeared in person.Assad and his brother Maher have fled Syria and will be tried in absentia, but one of their relatives, former security official Atef Najib, was in the dock in handcuffs.”Today we begin the first trials of transitional justice in Syria,” judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan declared as he opened the session.”This includes a defendant in custody, present in the dock, as well as defendants who have fled justice,” he said.A judicial source, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the proceedings marked the beginning of preparations for the trials of Assad, his brother and other prominent figures like Najib.Najib, who was arrested in January 2025 in the aftermath of the collapse of the Assad government, appeared in court in Damascus in a striped prison jersey.He previously headed Syria’s political security branch in the southern province of Daraa, where Syria’s 2011 uprising first erupted.He is accused of leading a broad campaign of repression and arrests there.Assad fled to Moscow as Islamist-led forces closed in on Damascus in December 2024, ending more than five decades of his family dynasty’s rule.The judge did not question Najib during Sunday’s session, which was dedicated to “preparatory administrative and legal procedures”, and announced that a second hearing would be held on May 10.The judicial source said in-person trials will include Wassim al-Assad, another relative of the ousted president, former grand mufti Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, as well as military and security officials arrested by the new authorities in recent months.  Source link
