French President Emmanuel Macron called on Iran to “engage in good faith in negotiations” aimed at de-escalating the ongoing war in the Middle East, following a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian.In a post on X, Macron said he urged Iran to engage in good faith in negotiations to open a path toward de-escalation and to establish a framework addressing the international community’s expectations regarding Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its destabilizing regional activities. In a meeting on the Palestinian issue, the United Nations Security Council listened last night to a briefing by UN Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator at the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) Ramiz Alakbarov regarding settlement activities.The UN coordinator provided a briefing to the Security Council on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2334, concerning settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.The resolution, adopted by the Security Council in 2016, affirms that “Israel’s establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders.”At the outset of his review of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report on the implementation of the resolution, Alakbarov noted that the resolution reiterates its demand that Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.He said that settlement activities nevertheless continued at high levels. During the reporting period from Dec. 3 to March 13, Israeli planning authorities advanced or approved more than 6,000 housing units in the occupied West Bank.Alakbarov also reported an acceleration in the demolition and seizure of Palestinian-owned structures, attributing this to the lack of Israeli-issued building permits, which are nearly impossible for Palestinians to obtain. He added that the eviction of Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem has continued, while violence against civilians persists, with numerous deadly incidents recorded.Regarding the situation in Gaza, the UN coordinator said that the ceasefire remains highly fragile. He referred to ongoing Israeli air operations, shelling, and live fire across the Gaza Strip, including around what is known as the ‘Yellow Line.’ At the same time, he noted that high levels of violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have continued at an alarming pace.During the period covered by the report, 32 Palestinians, including 7 children, were killed in large-scale operations carried out by Israeli security forces, exchanges of fire, settler attacks, and other incidents in the West Bank.The UN official also noted that daily settler attacks have escalated, often in the presence of Israeli forces, resulting in casualties, property damage, and displacement among Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank.He conveyed the condemnation of the UN Secretary-General of the continued and unrelenting expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, stating that it fuels tensions, restricts Palestinian access to their land, and threatens the viability of an independent, contiguous Palestinian state.Alakbarov called on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law, expressing concern over unilateral Israeli measures to deepen administrative and territorial control over the West Bank. He said these steps are likely to further entrench Israeli control over the land and contribute to settlement expansion.In his report, the UN Secretary-General reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Palestinians in ending the unlawful occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, UN resolutions, and bilateral agreements aiming to achieve the vision of a two-state solution, with two states living side by side in peace and security based on the pre-1967 lines. I hope I am going to be able to play during the international break and make a difference.”The France captain – a World Cup winner in 2018 and runner-up in 2022 – said he had been annoyed by the rumour mill suggesting his injury was more serious than it actually was. I am not going to go into the details, I will say I was not at my best in handling this period, I was not the happiest of players but I am delighted that is behind me now. Organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games unveiled the event’s official visual identity on Monday, a floral-themed design system meant to reflect the city’s landscape, neighborhoods and cultural character.The branding will appear across competition venues, fan areas, citywide installations, signage, digital platforms and broadcast presentations during the Games, LA28 said.At the center of the design is the “Superbloom,” a reference to the bursts of wildflowers that can blanket parts of Southern California after periods of rain.”It was a great turning point for us when we developed this color palette,” Geoff Engelhardt, LA28 Head of Brand Design, told reporters on a call.”It’s high energy, optimistic, and most importantly, welcoming. We are welcoming the world in 2028 to the biggest and greatest party it has ever seen.”BIRD OF PARADISEThe core graphic is built around 13 individual blooms, which organizers said represent different elements of Los Angeles, from its entertainment culture to its neighborhoods, people and native landscape.The color palette draws on the Bird of Paradise, the official flower of Los Angeles, and is grouped into four families – Poppy, Scarlet Flax, Bluebell and Sagebrush – to evoke the region’s terrain and vegetation.”We’re inviting the world to this space and the colors that we pulled from our beautiful, official flower of the city reflect that,” said Ric Edwards, LA28 Vice President of Brand Design and Executive Design Director.”We’ve got 40 plus venues that we need to design and these colors transmit different moods. (AFP) Iran denied Monday that it had engaged in negotiations with the United States, after President Donald Trump postponed a threat to bomb Iran’s power grid because of what he described as productive talks with unidentified Iranian officials.Trump wrote early in the US morning on his Truth Social platform that the US and Iran had held “very good and productive” conversations about a “complete and total resolution of hostilities in the Middle East”.As a result, he said, he was postponing a plan to hit Iran’s energy grid for five days. His announcement sent share prices sharply higher and oil prices sharply lower, a sudden reversal to a market swoon caused by his weekend threats and Iran’s vows to respond.He later told reporters that his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who had been negotiating with Iran before the war, had held discussions with a top Iranian official into the evening on Sunday that were to continue Monday.”We have had very, very strong talks. We’ll see where they lead. Vietnam and Russia Monday signed a co-operation agreement on the construction of Vietnam's first nuclear power plant, Russia's Rosatom nuclear agency said Monday.Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was visiting energy-rich Russia as Vietnam seeks to shore up its fuel reserves at a time of disruption to energy supplies caused by the war in the Middle East, sparking fears of fuel shortages around the world.Since the US-Israeli war against Iran began in late February, the cost of 95-octane petrol and diesel in Vietnam, a manufacturing hub, has soared by 50% and 70% respectively.The agreement lays out the legal framework for the construction of two reactors with a total output of 2,400MW at Vietnam's proposed Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant, Rostam said.Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev said the agreement would be the ‘foundation for a long-term industrial partnership, which will strengthen Vietnam's energy independence and open up new opportunities for economic growth’.No timeline was given for when construction would start or when the plant might come online.Moscow and Hanoi had initially agreed to build the Ninh Thuan 1 atomic power station back in 2010, but later decided to suspend construction.Another agreement between Russia's top liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer Novatek and a Vietnamese buyer was also signed recently, Novatek's CEO Leonid Mikhelson said Monday.’We have been in negotiations with potential buyers for over five years, and have very recently signed a preliminary supply agreement with one of them.
