The FIFA Arab Cup qualifiers kicked off in Qatar Tuesday with Palestine, Kuwait and Syria reaching the group stage on a thrilling day of action. Less than a week out from the start of the second edition of the tournament proper, Palestine needed penalties to beat Libya after a goalless draw, while Mohammad Daham dazzled as Kuwait eased past Mauritania 2-0 and Syria comfortably dispatched South Sudan by the same scoreline. At the Al Gharafa Stadium, Palestine enjoyed the better run of play in the first half and had the best looks at goal, first through a left-footed effort from Oday Dabbagh that missed the target, followed by Mustafa Zeidan hooking a right-footer wide of the mark from inside the area.Libya found their footing in the second half and nearly had an opener when Ezzeddin Elmaremi swung a shot wide, followed later by a gilt-edged chance for Mahmoud Alshalwi that was spoiled. Back came Palestine and Libya goalkeeper Ayman Altihar was called on to save a well-struck volley from Hamed Hamdan.Libya made a notable switch right before the full-time whistle, as Altihar made way for Abdelhadi Yassin with penalties looming, but it was Palestine’s Rami Hamada stealing the show by saving a spot kick before a missed attempt from Maruwan Alhibeeshi secured their progress. The field is now set in Group A of the regional showpiece, which contains hosts Qatar, Tunisia, Syria and Palestine. At the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Daham stole the show in the first qualifier as the electric winger scored one and created the other in Kuwait’s fairly straightforward win over Mauritania. The winger was on hand to nod home the opener at the back post in just the eighth minute, following a deflected Rashed al-Dousari cross. Then it was the 25 year-old’s teasing cross that lured Mauritania defender Nouh Mohamed into a touch that flew past his own goalkeeper to send Kuwait to the break with a two-goal advantage. Mauritania had a Hacen El Id effort ruled out for offside just shy of the hour but an organised Kuwait saw things out to set up Group C dates with Egypt, Jordan and United Arab Emirates.Meanwhile, Syria continued their excellent form this year by comfortably defeating a plucky South Sudan team to reach the group stage. South Sudan bravely held off the Syria attack in the opening half. But they fell a goal behind in the 52nd minute after brilliant play down the right wing from Mahmoud al-Aswad, who crossed for Mohammad al-Hallak to convert from close range. That goal immediately changed the trajectory of the game, with captain Mahmoud al-Mawas doubling the lead seven minutes later with an exquisite strike into the top corner. Syria twice came close to extending their advantage late on through al-Aswad and al-Hallak as South Sudan’s wait to qualify for their first major tournament continued. Related Story Source link

After a bruising Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Lando Norris lost the lead to Max Verstappen at the start and finished second before being disqualified for excessive skid-block wear, the championship leader is now looking forward to ‘warm weather, playing some golf and padel’ in Qatar.Norris’ hopes of stretching his advantage ahead of this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit, and the Abu Dhabi finale the week after, took a heavy hit when both he and McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri were disqualified following post-race checks in Las Vegas.Despite the setback, Norris still tops the standings with a 24-point cushion over Piastri and Red Bull’s Verstappen. The title remains his to lose, but the Qatar weekend complicates matters with Sprint race points on offer this Saturday.A total of 58 points remain on the table: 25 each for Qatar and Abu Dhabi, plus eight for winning Saturday’s Sprint. Should Norris end the Qatar GP with a lead of 26 points or more over both Piastri and Verstappen, he will seal his maiden world championship.Even if he wins the Sprint and both rivals fail to score, Norris would move 32 clear with 50 still available. Over the weekend as a whole, simply outscoring both by two points would be enough for him to clinch the title. Before diving into the pressure of an action-packed weekend in Lusail, the McLaren driver wants to unwind in Qatar for couple of days. “I look forward to Qatar. I look forward to getting somewhere warm and just go play some golf, go play some padel for a few days, enjoy a few days off, and do everything we can to try and win in Qatar,” Norris said. However, with an in-form Verstappen breathing down his neck and chasing a fifth consecutive world championship, Norris can seldom take a breather. Since Verstappen’s victory in Austin last month, the Dutchman has slashed his deficit to the championship leader — then Piastri — by 64 points across four races. Averaging 12 points over Norris in the final two rounds is still a tall order for Verstappen, but his relentless form and Red Bull’s late-season resurgence mean the reigning champion will be ready to capitalise on any slip by – as he did in Las Vegas.Asked whether he would approach the race differently after surrendering the lead in Vegas, a moment rendered moot by the disqualification, Norris insisted he has no intention of going conservative. “I’ve never been in that position before, so I probably can’t really answer it,” he said.“But nothing feels different now, even though that is the opportunity I’m entering into. I treat it the same. I treat it like I want to go and win. I’ll do everything I can to try and win the race. It’s a lot more fun when you win than when you come second. My goal is to win both races to the end of the season, and the Sprint as well. So I’ll try and win all three. I just focus on having a few days off, shifting the time zone back, and then focusing on Free Practice 1,” he added. The high-speed Lusail Circuit, flowing through the desert on the outskirts of Doha, adds further intrigue to the title battle. Originally designed for motorcycle racing, the 5.419km track is dominated by medium- and high-speed corners and features a one-kilometre start-finish straight that provides the prime overtaking chance into Turn 1. Tyre management will be crucial, with Pirelli limiting each set to 25 laps due to the extreme load generated by the fast corners. For Verstappen, winner of both previous Qatar Grands Prix, Lusail presents an ideal opportunity to ramp up the pressure on Norris. But Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies warned that the grid should expect a complete “reset” after the unique conditions in Las Vegas.“You can’t imagine a more different situation in Qatar compared to Las Vegas. Everything is the opposite. We will reset and try to nail the weekend,” Mekies said.Verstappen’s win in Las Vegas was his sixth of the season and his fourth in the last seven races. Mekies believes the 28-year-old is performing at one of the highest levels ever seen in F1.“In terms of driving and what he does, I think he’s as good or better than everything we have seen,” he said. “There are many examples this year. We know we suffered in the first part of the season. The guys have done an amazing job turning around the car, and now that he’s able to fight again for the win, he produces masterclass after masterclass.” Related Story Source link

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emphasised the importance of increasing diplomatic pressure on the Israeli occupation and removing all obstacles to the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.“These matters cannot be postponed. A determined demonstration of the international community’s will and capacity to impose sanctions would effectively restrain the Israeli occupation,” Erdogan said during a press gaggle aboard his plane returning from South Africa on Sunday, following his participation in the G20 Summit.During his meetings with G20 leaders and in the speeches he delivered throughout the summit sessions, Erdogan highlighted the need to maintain the existing ceasefire and advance reconstruction efforts.Addressing the humanitarian catastrophe facing Gazans, Erdogan underscored that all nations have a moral duty to stand with the Palestinians in their struggle. He stressed that the countries responsible for enabling Israel’s reckless actions must immediately assume responsibility for their role.Erdogan also criticised the United Nations for failing to fulfill its responsibilities so far, urging it to assert its influence in the measures to be taken going forward.According to the Gaza Government Media Office, although a ceasefire agreement took effect in Gaza on October 10 as part of its first phase, Israel has since violated the deal more than 497 times, resulting in the deaths of 342 Palestinians.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stressed that it is important to ramp up diplomatic pressure on the Israeli occupation and remove all obstacles to surge the humanitarian aid into Gaza.Such things can't be postponed, as long as the demonstration of resolute desire and capability of imposing sanctions by the international community would literally restrain the Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Erdogan said while he was in a press gaggle aboard the plane returning from South Africa Sunday after his participation in the G20 Summit.During his meetings with leaders of G20 and the speeches he delivered throughout the sessions, Erdogan noted the significance of maintaining the ceasefire that had been achieved, as well as the reconstruction efforts.Erdogan tackled the humanitarian catastrophe gripping the Gazans, highlighting that it behooves all nations to stand in support of the Palestinians' hard struggle. Killing of commander has deepened fears of new escalationIsrael has kept up strikes since US-brokered truce a year agoAnalyst says Israel could be using AI to identify future targetsHundreds gathered in Beirut's southern suburbs Monday to mourn Hezbollah's top military commander Haytham Ali Tabtabai and four other fighters from the Lebanese group killed in an Israeli strike on the city's outskirts the previous day.The targeted assassination by Israel – a type of operation that had become rarer since a ceasefire was agreed last year – came a day after Lebanon marked its Independence Day and deepened fears of a renewed Israeli escalation. As the mass funeral snaked its way through neighbourhoods in the Lebanese capital's southern suburbs Monday, chants rang out against Israel and the United States. Both countries have been pressuring Lebanon to move faster to disarm Hezbollah, in line with the 2024 ceasefire agreement.’We will not leave our weapons, we will not leave our land!’ the mourners chanted. Top Hezbollah political officials attended the funeral in person but it was unclear if any military officials were present. The November 2024 US-brokered ceasefire was meant to end a year of fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli military, triggered by Hezbollah's rocket fire on Israeli posts a day after the October 2023 storming of Israel by its Palestinian ally Hamas. During that war, Israel killed Hezbollah's then-leader Hassan Nasrallah, his expected successor and much of the group's top military brass.Tabtabai, 57, rose through the ranks swiftly to fill roles left by slain commanders, according to the Israeli military and a Lebanese security source. After the truce, he was appointed the group's top military official and sat on its Fighter Council, the body responsible for military operations.A Lebanese security source said Israel now appeared to be targeting the group's ‘next generation’ after having killed most of the group's founding leadership.’Israel is peeling them off layer by layer,’ said a Western diplomat who works on Lebanon.Israel has sustained near-daily strikes on Lebanon since the truce, targeting what it says are Hezbollah arms depots, fighters and efforts by the group to rebuild. It has ratcheted up the strikes in recent weeks.Israel has also continued to gather intelligence on Hezbollah's activities using surveillance drones, a Lebanese security source said. Monday, Israeli drones flew over Beirut, Lebanon's south and its eastern Bekaa Valley, according to the source.Israel's advanced capabilities have worried Hezbollah's supporters. Malek Ayoub, a retired military analyst, told Hezbollah's Al Manar television station Monday that Israel could be using facial recognition technology to identify Hezbollah figures from the station's coverage of Tabtabai's funeral.’Artificial intelligence can identify any of those faces to build Israel's bank of targets,’ Ayoub said. A total of three winners of WISE Prize for Education 2024-2025 were announced yesterday at the closing session of the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE 12).Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, awarded the winners – global changemakers who are redefining how the world learns. The winners are: TUMO (First Place), headquartered in Armenia; Queen Rania Foundation ( Jordan) the organisation that developed Iqrali.jo ( Second Place) and Darsel headquartered in the USA ( Third Place). The winners collectively received a total prize fund of $1mn with $500,000 awarded to TUMO; $300,000 to Iqrali.jo, and $200,000 to Darsel.TUMO, headquartered in Armenia, is reimagining after-school creative learning experiences; Iqrali.jo, headquartered in Jordan, is a parental platform designed to support children’s Arabic literacy development; and Darsel, headquartered in the USA, provides AI-driven math tutoring in low-connectivity settings.Since its inception, the WISE Prize for Education has become one of the most respected international recognitions in education, honouring visionary individuals and organisations whose work delivers lasting, systemic impact for learners and communities worldwide.Under its new structure that expands the impact of education solutions, six finalists were shortlisted for the accolade, with three winning educational solutions being chosen and awarded during the summit’s closing ceremony.Stavros N Yiannouka, CEO of WISE, said: “Each year, the WISE Prize reaffirms that transformative educational change begins with individuals and organizations who dare to rethink what learning can be. These winning solutions demonstrate what is possible when innovation is grounded in evidence and committed to improving learning and life outcomes at scale.”Yiannouka also noted that three themes have emerged from WISE12. He stated: “The first is that education must remain a deeply human endeavour. The second theme that emerges is that tools and technologies have always been part of the human story. But they exist to serve us, not the other way around.“Today we are on the cusp of something potentially very different. We are introducing not just a tool or a technology, but potentially an alien intelligence. We are introducing it into our homes, into our workplaces, and into our classrooms. We must ensure that it is fully aligned with our interests, our values, and that it supports and not detracts from human partnership.”Abhijit Banerjee, Nobel Prize winner and a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology speaking at the closing session noted that with artificial intelligence and with the rise of different access to technologies, there is also a vivid promise of a future.“It could be entirely different where access would be through many different mechanisms that we haven’t visualised right now. I think that it is very important that in this moment we hold on to the excitement and the optimism because I think one of the things that almost surely will happen is already happening,” he added.
