US aiding Saudi with intel and planning support, says official

A US military task force is working to enhance intelligence sharing and planning assistance for Saudi forces, a US official said yesterday, as the kingdom faces attacks from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi fighters. US Central Command “has a task force in place for enhancing intelligence sharing and planning support with Saudi forces,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the military command “maintains a strong security alliance with our Saudi partners in confronting regional challenges.” The Houthis have renewed fighting against government forces since Yemen’s civil war reignited in July, when the group declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia and began targeting its ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis seized control of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait last week, which has become increasingly vital as the wider US-Iran war chokes off the Strait of Hormuz, another key Middle East shipping route. The Houthis have also attacked oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading crude exporter, and the group says the kingdom has hit back with dozens of air strikes in Yemen. The sudden revival of Yemen’s war, dormant since 2022, has left Riyadh rushing to respond. Last week, US media reported that the kingdom’s crown prince made a personal request to President Donald Trump for US intervention, but was turned down. On Saturday, Trump said that the Houthis have asked Washington not to intervene.  Source link

Gaza civil defence says toll from building collapse rises to 20, including 5 children

At least 20 people, including five children, died, and dozens remained missing on Wednesday after a Gaza apartment building collapsed from damage sustained in earlier Israeli strikes, the territory’s civil defence agency said, giving an updated toll.The bodies of “20 martyrs have been recovered from the rubble of a building that collapsed… Among the dead are five infants, while dozens of people remain trapped beneath the debris,” said Mahmoud Bassal, the spokesperson for the civil defence agency, which operates as a rescue force under Hamas authority. Moreno demands best from Al Rayyan against Al Faisaly

Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno has urged his players to produce their best as they begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Jordanian side Al Faisaly at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday night. “We are eagerly looking forward to playing against Al Faisaly tomorrow in the AFC Champions League Two,” Moreno said at the pre-match press conference. “We know we are facing a good team and that it will be a very difficult match, but we are playing at home and are determined to secure a win in our opening game.” The match marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010. Their opponents, two-time AFC Cup winners Al Faisaly, finished runners-up in the Jordanian Pro League last season. Al Rayyan have made a strong start to the Qatar Stars League and sit second after four matches, just two points behind leaders Al Sadd. Moreno believes that form can provide confidence, but stressed that his players must remain focused on the task ahead. “Past results give us great confidence heading into tomorrow’s match. It is very important for us, but our focus right now is solely on tomorrow’s game. Previous matches are over; right now, we know we must think only about tomorrow’s match,” he said. Moreno acknowledged the challenge of facing an opponent from a different league, saying Al Rayyan did not have a complete picture of Al Faisaly’s level. “It is a different competition. We are ready to play in the league, ready for the Qatar Cup, and ready to face Al Faisaly in the Champions League,” he said. “However, it is true that sometimes I do not know the opponent’s exact level because they play in a different league. We are entering tomorrow’s match without knowing their precise level, which is a challenge for us. But I repeat: we are ready, we respect the opponent greatly, and I have immense confidence in my players. I told them that if we want to win tomorrow, we must be at our very best.” Al Rayyan have conceded only two goals in their four league matches, and Moreno was pleased with the team's defensive solidity while calling for greater efficiency in attack. “We have a very good defence, and certainly a very good attack as well, because we are Al Rayyan, and Al Rayyan possesses very talented players,” he said. “However, we always want to improve our performance. Ideally, we would not concede any goals, though that is very difficult to achieve. We want to improve and score more goals. In recent league matches, we created plenty of scoring opportunities, and we need to capitalise on those situations.” Moreno also provided an update on striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who remains sidelined as he continues his recovery. “Mitrovic is currently sidelined. While he did begin training with us last week, he is only performing specific drills. He needs more training time to get up to speed, and I believe he could start playing after the upcoming break,” he said. “We also have a few players dealing with minor issues, and we will decide on their status tomorrow. It is normal to have players managing slight knocks from time to time.” Midfielder Julien De Sart said Al Rayyan were determined to make a strong start to their continental campaign. “We expect a tough match. We know we must give our best in every game to stand a chance of winning,” he said. “As the coach mentioned, we are entering this tournament with great ambition. It is an honour to play in the AFC Champions League Two. We will take it one match at a time and aim to go as far as possible.” De Sart, who has had to contend with injuries and time on the bench, said he was ready to contribute whenever called upon. “That’s football. I believe that throughout your career, you go through periods of injury or time on the bench, and you simply have to adapt to the circumstances,” he said. “I feel I am constantly improving; the more I play, the better I feel. So, if the coach needs me tomorrow, I am ready, and if I’m on the bench, well, that’s just football. Regardless of how long I play, I will try to give my best in training and in matches. As I said, I am ready for however many minutes I play, whether it’s 10 minutes or 90. I will give my all, and the rest will follow.”  Source link

Saudi air defences intercept Houthi drone south of Makkah

Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening before it entered the prohibited airspace of the holy city, the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen said. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercepted the drone at 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 15 before it entered the restricted airspace over Makkah. Al-Maliki described the incident as the Houthis’ second attempt to target Makkah, citing an earlier ballistic missile launch on July 27, 2017. He said the latest attempt targeted a city of profound religious significance to Muslims worldwide and sought to endanger and intimidate pilgrims, citizens and residents. Al-Maliki said the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims is a “red line,” adding that the coalition would not hesitate to take necessary measures to deter further Houthi attacks.
