Zverev hails mother's unwavering belief after US Open triumph

Family was at the heart of Alexander Zverev's U.S. Open triumph on Sunday as the German saluted the members of his inner circle and paid a heartfelt tribute to his mother for refusing to let diabetes define his future.The top seed beat American Ben Shelton 6-3 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2 at Flushing Meadows to finish a spectacular year at the Grand Slams in which he proved his doubters wrong by going from perennial nearly man to two-time major champion.Shortly after his victory, Zverev reserved special praise for his mother Irina, a former professional tennis player, and credited her with ensuring type 1 diabetes never limited his ambitions in life.’When your 4-year-old son is diagnosed with diabetes and doctors in the office tell you that life and sports will be very limited for that child, it takes a very strong mother to say 'my son will be whatever he wants to be',’ Zverev said.’'If he wants to be a tennis player, he'll be a tennis player. If he wants to do something else, he'll do something else, but this illness will not define us'.’I'm happy that we worked through it and we're doing the things that we're doing now. My mother is the most important and strongest person I know because it takes an unbelievably strong woman to do what she did.’The 29-year-old thanked his team, which includes his father Alexander Zverev Sr and his brother Mischa, for their hard work that had delivered him another Grand Slam trophy to add to his Olympic gold medal from the Tokyo Games five years ago.’We went almost 30 years without winning a Grand Slam title and now we've won two in a span of three months,’ Zverev said.’I think everyone has seen how hard we've worked, how much we've suffered, how much pain we went through and I think that 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.’ SCARS OF 2020Zverev had come agonisingly close to capturing his maiden Grand Slam title in New York in 2020, leading Dominic Thiem by two sets to none and later serving for the match in the fifth set before losing.He finally won his first major crown at this year's French Open after defeating Flavio Cobolli in five sets, and the German doubled his tally in New York despite making a shaky start to the fortnight.He also reached the Wimbledon final this year, falling to Jannik Sinner in four sets.’The scars of the 2020 (U.S. Open) final, they disappeared after I won in Paris. I said at Wimbledon, though I lost in the final, I enjoyed the match … enjoyed playing on Centre Court in front of an amazing crowd,’ Zverev said.’Before winning in Paris, I felt a lot of stress all the time, because there was always a question mark. 'Will I ever win one?' Now it's more of a joy to play those kinds of finals.’With Sinner sidelined by a knee injury and Carlos Alcaraz having just returned from a wrist problem, Zverev reluctantly accepted that he was the man to beat in men's tennis after a strong finish to the Grand Slam season.’Four or five months ago, when both of them were healthy, I wasn't. I was losing to Jannik all the time,’ he added.’So if everyone is healthy, Jannik is still ahead. It's as simple as that.’  Source link

De Zerbi apologises to fans after Spurs’ stalemate extends goal drought

Tottenham Hotspur’s Italian head coach Roberto De Zerbi reacts during the English Premier League football match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton (AFP) Roberto De Zerbi said sorry to Tottenham’s furious fans after his winless side were booed off following their 0-0 draw against Everton on Saturday. De Zerbi’s side have yet to score a single goal in four Premier League matches this season and Tottenham supporters showed their frustration at the final whistle. After the jeers had rained down from the stands, Tottenham boss De Zerbi said he understood the abuse. “I’m sorry for the fans. They were fantastic today. It is normal, the reaction of the fans,” he said.Asked how he felt about the bleak start to the season after Tottenham splashed out more than £300 million ($406 million) on 10 signings, De Zerbi said: “It is not a tough moment. A tough moment was last season in Sunderland when we were close to relegation. “Now is one of the moments in football when you are rebuilding a team.”We played very well in the first 30 minutes then we lost energy because our physical condition is not the best. We are working for that.”Tottenham’s miserable form has left them languishing just above the relegation zone after two draws and two defeats from their first four games.Their only win and goals this season came in a League Cup victory over second tier Charlton.Tottenham’s lack of attacking firepower is a major concern and De Zerbi conceded they lacked composure in the Everton penalty area.”We didn’t shoot enough for the quality of the play we showed. We had to shoot more times. We went inside the area 74 times but we didn’t create enough for the quality of the play,” he said. “We have to work for sure. We have to analyse the quality of the decisions but we made too many wrong decisions. I’m not positive and I’m not negative. I am realistic.”I have to analyse the performance and the potential situations when we could shoot and score with better decisions.”Tottenham only avoided relegation on the final day of last season and have finished 17th for the last two years.Their summer spending spree was supposed to end their miserable period of underachievement.But De Zerbi admitted his team lacked confidence as the game wore on, with the tense atmosphere in the stadium adding to their anxious display. “I observed my players with a little less confidence in the second half and I don’t like this. They need to understand that we are in the right way,” he said.”They are human. They are sensitive, they have emotions. My position is to help them and stay focused on the improvement we need to do.”If we play 90 minutes like we did the first 30 we will win many games.”  Related Story Source…

Beds too short in ‘worst-ever’ Asian Games rooms, say South Korea

Accommodation at the Asian Games starting this week in Japan is the “worst ever”, South Korean officials told AFP on Monday, also warning of “a serious shortage” of rooms. Beds in shipping container-style huts are too short for players to stretch out, a South Korean basketball chief said, while officials from the Philippines resorted to Airbnb.There is no dedicated athletes’ village at the Games, with organisers instead relying on a cruise ship, temporary wooden cabins and hotels in a bid to cut costs. The Games in the city of Nagoya and Aichi prefecture officially open on Saturday but football and basketball is already under way. Jung Jae-yong, vice president of the Korea Basketball Association, told AFP he was deeply unhappy with the cabins where the men’s basketball team are staying.”Based on my experience this is the worst it has ever been,” he said. “Athletes who are over two metres tall cannot even stretch their legs out on the beds. It’s unreasonable.” Byeon Jun-hyeong, from the basketball team, posted a video on social media showing a leaking sink and soaked floor in his hut.He posted the caption, “Please help us”.The huts are set to be home to 2,000 athletes and officials over the more than two weeks of the Games. Indian sports chiefs are so worried about the cabins that they built replicas to help get their athletes used to them.The vice president Jung accused organisers of failing to respond to South Korea’s concerns. “The organisers have still not said anything,” said Jung.”We are very concerned and discussing extensively with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee what to do about this.”Hundreds of athletes were briefly evacuated from their accommodation last week as record rainfall lashed Nagoya.More rain has been forecast in the coming days. – ‘Serious shortage’ – More than 17,000 athletes and officials are expected at the Games — a bigger number than the Olympics.Local organisers were initially expecting 15,000 and argued last month that they had “neither the manpower nor the budget” to deal with ballooning numbers.The Olympic Council of Asia later said that everyone would get a place to stay.Star cricketers have voiced fears about a lack of top-notch hotels. A South Korean Olympic committee official told AFP that, with the Games just days away, there are problems.”At the moment there is a serious shortage of accommodation not only for the entire South Korean delegation to the Asian Games, but for delegations from around the world in the Aichi-Nagoya area,” the official said. “We are doing everything we can to resolve the issue and ensure there are no such problems.”Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino told AFP that all his country’s athletes had been given a room.But “some officials, like coaches, were moved to different hotels and Airbnb”. Asian Games organisers did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena is due to arrive in Nagoya on Tuesday. Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes will stay on the vessel.The rest will be in hotels, including in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events will take place.  Related Story Source link

India cricketers refuse Asia Cup trophy from top Pakistan official

PICTURE: Asian Cricket Council India’s women refused to collect the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi after the team won a record-extending eighth continental title.India hammered Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the T20 final in Dubai on Sunday but Harmanpreet Kaur’s side skipped the trophy presentation, repeating the stance of the men’s team last year. On both occasions the trophy was supposed to have been handed over by Naqvi in his role as head of the Asian Cricket Council.Naqvi is also Pakistan’s interior minister and head of the country’s cricket board.There are long-running tensions between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan. A year after beating Pakistan in the final, the men’s side have still not collected their trophy.”That stand has been taken by BCCI (Indian cricket board), and we stand by it,” Indian women’s coach Amol Muzumdar told reporters.”We are the champions, that’s good enough.” Sunday’s presentation was delayed by nearly 50 minutes, after which Naqvi distributed medals to the runners-up before the ceremony ended abruptly.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajeev Shukla were at the ground as India presented medals to their players themselves.  Related Story Source link
