Israeli forces continued their attacks on towns in southern Lebanon on Monday, carrying out artillery shelling and machine-gun fire operations in several areas of the region.According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), Israeli forces conducted intermittent artillery shelling on the outskirts of Al-Deir neighborhood in Nabatieh Al-Fawqa, while simultaneously opening machine-gun fire toward the town of Beit Yahoun in the Bint Jbeil district.The Israeli attacks on Lebanon come amidst ongoing tension and escalation along the southern border, alongside fears that the scope of the attacks will widen and that residential areas will continue to be targeted.  Source link

Former West Ham and Czech international goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has died aged 64, five years after he was diagnosed with cancer, the English Championship club announced on Monday.Miklosko made nearly 400 appearances for the Hammers between 1990 and 1997 after joining from Banik Ostrava, and later played for QPR. The Czech helped West Ham win promotion to the top flight in 1991 and 1993 and was much loved by supporters, who regularly sang his name long after he left the club. He later returned as a goalkeeping coach. Miklosko announced his decision to withdraw from further cancer treatment in December 2024.”It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United announces the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Ludek Miklosko,” West Ham said in a statement.”Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.”Banik described their former player as an “outstanding goalkeeper and above all a great personality”. London-based West Ham said they would honour Miklosko with a period of appreciation at Tuesday’s League Cup third-round match against Fulham. In a statement shared by West Ham, his son Martin said: “We are heartbroken at his loss, but take huge comfort from the immense support he received from all of you, along with the knowledge that he is now at peace and no longer suffering. “Dad simply loved West Ham United, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game. The club, and its fans, were and always will be a part of our family, so thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.” Miklosko, who represented Czechoslovakia and then the Czech Republic, told Czech media in 2024 he stopped having treatment because he wanted to “live a normal life”.  Related Story Source link

More than 31,000 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas in south China’s Hainan Province as persistent heavy rain battered parts of the island.According to China’s Xinhua news agency, 31,564 people had been relocated, though no major disasters were reported, according to the provincial committee for disaster prevention, mitigation and relief.Hainan raised its flood-control emergency response to Level II, coinciding with Wanning, which had activated a Level I emergency response, the highest level in China’s four-tier emergency response system.Authorities in the island province of Hainan, southern China, suspended classes in some areas and closed 27 tourist attractions after a tropical depression formed over the South China Sea, bringing heavy rainfall across the province.The relevant authorities said that they are closely monitoring rainfall and working to prevent flooding, water accumulation in urban areas, geological disasters, and the inundation of roads and bridges. A Palestinian was martyred and six others were wounded as a result of gunfire and raids carried out by the Israeli occupation army in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday.Medical sources reported the martyrdom of a Palestinian by Israeli occupation forces in the Al-Mawasi area west of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.The sources pointed out that five Palestinians were wounded, one of them in critical condition, from shelling by an Israeli drone strike west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, while a sixth Palestinian was wounded by Israeli gunfire in Al-Qassam Street in the center of the city.Israeli vehicles fired east of the city amid continuous artillery shelling, while occupation fire hit the tents of the displaced in the area of the Austrian cemetery, west of Khan Younis. Israeli occupation boats also fired towards the shore of the Rafah Sea, south of the Strip.The number of victims of the Israeli occupation’s aggression on the Gaza Strip has risen since October 7, 2023, to 73,786 martyrs and 174,771 wounded.  Source link

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs (PCDEA) warned Sunday of the ongoing abuses against inmates languishing inside the Israeli occupation’s jails.In a statement, PCDEA stressed that those Palestinian inmates are plagued by complex living and health conditions amid persistent vengeance policies against them, thus aggravating their travails and threatening their lives. Three prisoners there are suffering from deteriorating health conditions in Ofer Prison, the statement cautioned, clarifying that among them is an elderly inmate who is reeling from chronic illnesses and traces of bruises he seemed to have incurred during his detention. The statement warned that those prisoners are sorely in need of medical treatment, as patients are deprived of receiving medication, coupled with the proliferation of cutaneous diseases that pose a threat to their health. Those inmates are deprived of sanitation tools, alongside numerous other punitive actions, the statement continued, calling for urgent intervention to provide essential medical care, particularly to patients and elderly inmates. The commission stressed that assaults and medical negligence must stop, indicating that humanitarian conditions should be improved inside these jails to ensure their rights are protected based on international and humanitarian rules and standards. At the end of last February, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said the aforementioned prison had been mired in Israeli repression and starvation policies, stressing that the Israeli occupation had pursued novel repression techniques, including weapons that cause burns to the body.  Source link

France’s President Emmanuel Macron will make a two-day state visit to neighbouring Spain from September 29, the Spanish government said on Monday.The centrist French leader will be welcomed by Spain’s leftist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on September 30, while a banquet will be held in Macron’s honour with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, the government said. It will be Macron’s first official visit to Spain since January 2023 and the first state visit by a French president to the country since 2009, according to the French presidency. “The two countries share… a common commitment to protecting democracy and young people, particularly in the face of the challenges posed by social media and artificial intelligence,” Macron’s office said. Both leaders will also address “the major European and international issues, in particular the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East”, the Elysee added. While on his 2023 visit, Macron and Sanchez signed a friendship treaty, which has yet to be ratified by Spain in the face of objections by the right-wing opposition Source link
