UN Official: Sudan continues to face acute hunger and displacement crisis

A senior UN official has warned that Sudan continues to face the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis, with 20 million people suffering from acute hunger and 14 million displaced, cautioning that funding shortages could force UN aid agencies to drastically scale back operations in the coming weeks.At the conclusion of an eight-day visit to Sudan, Acting Director of UN World Food Programme (WFP) Carl Skau said around five million people are facing Emergency levels of hunger, classified under Phase 4 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), while around 200,000 people are experiencing Phase 5 levels, which is Famine. Reaching those in need has also become extremely difficult, he explained, noting that a journey from El Obeid to El Fasher that took about six hours before the war required three days now.He added that humanitarian workers are unable to cross front lines to reach communities on the other side.He explained that conditions in El Fasher are exceptionally harsh, noting that the city, which once had a population of around one million and served as a major regional capital, has endured 18 months of siege, including famine and indescribable atrocities.He noted that some conditions have improved, with better shelter provision, including plastic sheeting and tarpaulins requested by women to protect their families from the rain. WFP has also expanded its operations, currently reaching about 950,000 people in El Fasher each month. However, aid remains insufficient.According to the UN official, families receive only half-rations, providing enough food for about two weeks. Furthermore, many households are headed by women who have lost their husbands or sons, amid severe shortages of education, healthcare, shelter, and safe play spaces for children.He pointed out that drought is intensifying pressure on the population, explaining that Darfur has not witnessed such drought since 1984, despite the current period being the rainy season, highlighting local communities’ fears regarding its impact on agriculture and livestock.Despite the risks, Skau said WFP continues to reach between 4 and 5 million people each month, including between 2 and 2.5 million in hard-to-reach areas.He emphasized that the greatest obstacle currently facing the Programme ‘s operations is a lack of funding, warning that the agency may be forced to substantially scale down operations in the coming weeks if additional resources are not secured.  Source link

Germany strengthens Naval, reconnaissance capabilities by building new class 424 reconnaissance vessel

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the start of the steps to build a 424-class reconnaissance vessel, noting that the parliamentary consultations necessary to purchase the vessel and agree on its construction with the German company Rheinmetall are currently underway.A statement by the German Army quoted Pistorius as saying that the new planning of the capabilities of the armed forces identifies a need for four vessels of this category, while three vessels are currently being built. He noted that the identification of reconnaissance needs was carried out in coordination with the naval commands and the cyberspace and information sector.The German Defense Minister said that the reconnaissance vessels represent “Germany’s eyes and ears on the high seas,” at a time when the need to enhance information superiority is increasing, pointing to their importance in supporting the ability to make sound defense decisions to confront what he called “Russian hybrid warfare.”A statement by Rheinmetall, the manufacturer of the group of reconnaissance vessels, said that the delivery process will start gradually from 2029, with the aim of securing maritime reconnaissance capabilities over the coming decades.The statement explained that the advanced sensors will allow the monitoring of electromagnetic signals emitted from land, air and sea, while specialists in the cyberspace and information sector will work on collecting and analyzing information to support the assessment of the military situation.The four new vessels will replace three old reconnaissance ships that entered service between 1988 and 1989 and operated in the North, Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as the Horn of Africa and the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans.  Source link

Saudi Civil Defence announces danger passed in several areas

The Saudi Civil Defence announced Tuesday that the danger has passed for several areas of the Kingdom, following an alert issued by the National Early Warning Platform.The Saudi Civil Defence stated on X platform that an alert was issued via the National Early Warning System for emergencies across the governorates of Yanbu, Taif, Jeddah, and Al-Ula, as well as the city of Abha and the Jazan region, warning of a potential danger. It later announced that the threat had passed and conditions returned to normal.  Source link

Palestinian martyred from wounds sustained during Israeli raid on Al Bireh in West Bank

 A Palestinian man was martyred on Tuesday by Israeli occupation forces’ gunfire in the Umm Al Sharayet area of Al Bireh in the West Bank.The Palestinian man was martyred after succumbing to wounds sustained from being shot by the Israeli occupation army during a raid on the Umm Al Sharayet area. Occupation forces had stormed the area at dawn and fired live ammunition, critically wounding him. His death was subsequently announced, WAFA news agency reported.With his death, the number of Palestinians martyred by Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank has risen to over 100, amidst ongoing raids, assaults, and shootings targeting Palestinians.Israeli occupation forces continue to raid various Palestinian areas and towns, often firing live ammunition at civilians, amidst escalating attacks and military measures across the West Bank.  Source link
