Gohar survives heated Khafagy clash

Former World No. 1 Nouran Gohar set up a quarter-final showdown with arch-rival Hania El Hammamy after surviving a heated five-game duel with Egyptian compatriot Malak Khafagy at the Qatar Classic.Gohar, playing her first event since giving birth to her first child in April, had to dig deep to overcome Khafagy in an acrimonious affair that included more than 50 refereeing decisions over 91 minutes of chaotic play in Doha.The match descended into a scrappy, physical battle, with neither player able to find any sustained rhythm or accuracy. This was punctuated when Gohar required significant physio treatment after a heavy blow to the nose midway through the third game – an echo of the broken nose she sustained on this very court two years ago.After the players traded games deep into a dramatic decider, it was fifth seed Gohar who eventually prevailed, clinching victory by an 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 12-14, 11-9 scoreline. “This is the part of being back that I didn’t miss.” Gohar said after the match. “I didn’t enjoy my squash today, but I did enjoy my resilience and mental toughness. I need to go through matches like these.Gohar will face off against El Hammamy for the 34th time on the PSA Squash Tour in quarter-finals, after the World No.1 defeated England’s Lucy Turmel by an 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 scoreline.Elsewhere, World No.9 Tinne Gilis fended off India’s teenage sensation Anahat Singh in five games to advance to her first Platinum quarter-final since the Windy City Open in February. The eighth seed was forced to battle back from 2-1 down to set up a quarter-final tie with World No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam, after the Malaysian proved too strong for Salma Hany.In the men’s event, World No. 1 Mostafa Asal overcame a superb showing from Yannick Wilhelmi, while World No. 13 Aly Abou Eleinen claimed a clinical three-game victory over Baptiste Masotti.World No. 9 Marwan ElShorbagy and World No. 19 Gregoire Marche were the final two players to secure wins on day two of action at the Khalifa International Squash Complex after defeating Curtis Malik and Timothy Brownell, respectively.  Related Story Source link

(Reuters) Kimi Antonelli moved a mighty step closer to the Formula One title on Sunday after winning the first Spanish Grand Prix held at Madrid’s new circuit with a slice of luck on the side. The 20-year-old Italian’s Madring victory, his eighth win of the season, stretched his championship lead to 81 points after 14 rounds.Antonelli benefited from a well-timed virtual safety car (VSC) and calamitous McLaren pitstop on lap 16 of 57 that robbed pole-sitter and early leader Lando Norris of a likely win on a track where overtaking proved almost impossible.”I think today it’s good to win but it doesn’t feel as good because I think Lando today deserved the win but overall, we take it,” said Antonelli. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was second with Norris third. Antonelli now has 292 points to closest rival and teammate George Russell, who finished fifth, on 211.”There was nothing I could do… just luck not on our side,” said Norris. “I felt like we deserved it today but that’s racing sometimes. I feel like I drove a perfect race today, just luck wasn’t with me.” OPENING BATTLE FOR POSITIONAntonelli twice had to give the lead back to Norris on the opening lap after going off and gaining advantage in a battle through the opening corners but the Briton then settled into a rhythm and began to pull away. Verstappen also gained a place that he had to hand back to Antonelli and lost and gained position to Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who then suffered a brake problem that eventually forced the seven-time world champion to retire.Norris was more than six seconds clear with everything seemingly under control when Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll triggered the VSC by stopping on track on lap 14. Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell all came in for a cheap pitstop but Norris was unable to do so, having already gone past the entry point, and by the time he came around again the VSC had ended.McLaren called him in anyway on lap 16 for a switch to hard tyres but he was stopped for seven seconds and returned to the track in fifth place but effectively fourth with new leader Charles Leclerc, who ended up fourth for Ferrari, yet to stop. That proved the defining moment, with the remainder of the afternoon effectively a high-speed procession to the chequered flag without major incident — despite fears that there could be multiple crashes and red flags as seen in earlier junior races.Antonelli crossed the line 4.3 seconds clear of Verstappen with Norris a further 0.7 behind. Liam Lawson was sixth for Red Bull with Franco Colapinto seventh for Renault-owned Alpine and Mclaren’s Oscar Piastri eighth. Arvid Lindblad secured precious points for Racing Bulls in their battle for fifth with Alpine and Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg was the final scorer in 10th.  Related Story Source link

Zelensky ready to meet Putin at G20 in Miami

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would be willing to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami for talks on ending the war, in a media interview released yesterday. But the Kremlin said it had not yet made a decision on whether Putin would attend the gathering of world leaders on December 14-15, and repeated the Russian leader’s demand that Zelensky come to Russia for talks. Putin has repeatedly rejected offers for a face-to-face meeting with Zelensky aimed at brokering an end to more than four years of war. But the latest offer comes as Washington seeks to kick-start long-stalled talks onEurope’s deadliest conflict since World War II, with US negotiators visiting Kyiv and Moscow and President Donald Trump and Putin this week holding talks over the phone. The US holds this year’s presidency of the Group of 20 major economies, which comprises 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union, and Russian’s finance minister has already attended one G20 meeting. Asked whether he would be willing to meet Putin at the December summit if both leaders were invited, Zelensky told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle: “Yes, of course.“We have to come. We have to meet, to speak, and make decisions. It’s not about words. What I will tell him or what he wants to tell me, it doesn’t matter.” All that mattered were “results”, he added. But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was cited by Russia’s TASS news agency as saying that “we do not know yet whether we will be going to Miami”. Peskov repeated Putin’s demand that Zelensky come to Russia — which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, triggering the war — for any talks: “If he really wants to meet Putin, then Putin has said before that he can fly to Moscow.” In June Zelensky said he had proposed meeting Putin in the US during a call with Trump, and was waiting to see what came of it.The Ukrainian leader previously said that Putin ignored an invitation to meet him at a G7 summit in France the same month. Last weekend, US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow and Kyiv.In the Deutsche Welle interview, which took place Friday in Canada, Zelensky said that Witkoff and Kushner’s visit was a “good signal”, and it was important the pair had made a trip to Kyiv as well as Moscow. Zelensky has also announced he plans to meet Trump in late September, as Washington pushes for fresh face-to-face talks between Moscow and Kyiv. Asked about Ukraine’s position ahead of possible negotiations, Zelensky responded: “Ukraine now is much more stronger than last year on the battlefield. “That’s why we think that we have now (a) good position for negotiations.” Kyiv has said the talks could happen as early as this month, but the Kremlin on Monday said it was “too early” to discuss a venue or dates. Several previous rounds of negotiations have failed. Trust between the sides is low, and there is no sign that Moscow or Kyiv have shifted their positions. Both Moscow and Kyiv have escalated long-range strikes on each other in recent months, leading to the highest civilian death toll since the early days of the war.  Source link
