Kuwait condemns Iranian attacks on Jordan

Arab League welcomes UK decision to ban trade with Israeli settlement goods

The Arab League welcomed the decision of the United Kingdom to ban trade with goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements, as well as the intention expressed by twelve friendly countries to take similar steps by imposing restrictions on trade with goods produced in settlements that are illegal under international law.In a statement today, Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Fahmy considered that these measures, which included a clear statement from those countries, a step in the right direction towards addressing the illegal Israeli settlement system, restoring an accountability approach and not turning a blind eye to the rogue behavior of the occupation government.Fahmy stressed that the concrete and practical measures in the face of the settlement system aimed at undermining the two-state solution reflect the sense of all parties of the gravity of the developments taking place in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the apartheid regime established by the occupation, and its unleashing of settler terrorism against unarmed Palestinian civilians under the protection and encouragement of the Israeli government.The Secretary-General of the Arab League called on all countries that still believe in international law and in the two-state solution as the only way to settle the conflict between Palestine and Israel, to join this courageous position taken by the United Kingdom, which was clearly expressed in the statement of the twelve countries. He stressed that practical and concrete measures against the racist settlement system will make the occupation think about the cost of its illegal practices after years of absence of the logic of accountability and punishment.  Source link

New Zealand's Chapman switches to casual contract to play in BBL

Rwanda marks 21st Kwita Izina, Qatar Olympic champion Barshim among gorilla Namers

Rwanda has celebrated the 21st edition of Kwita Izina, its annual gorilla naming ceremony, with 22 baby mountain gorillas receiving names at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park.Held under the theme “Conservation is Life: Sustaining the Future,” the ceremony brought together local communities, conservationists, government officials, partners and international guests to celebrate Rwanda’s mountain gorillas and the country’s decades-long conservation efforts.The event was attended by Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Justin Nsengiyumva, as Guest of Honour, alongside former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and former Tanzanian Prime Minister Peter Pinda Mizengo.Distinguished Namers from the worlds of conservation, tourism, business, sport, entertainment, philanthropy and public service bestowed names on the newborn gorillas, highlighting the shared responsibility of protecting the species and its habitat.Speaking at the ceremony, Nsengiyumva recalled that only about 250 mountain gorillas remained in the Virunga Massif in the early 1980s. Today, more than 1,000 mountain gorillas live in the wild, including more than 600 in the Virunga Massif.“This remarkable recovery did not happen by chance,” he said, attributing the progress to the persistence of rangers, the expertise of veterinarians and researchers, strong conservation policies, responsible tourism and collaboration among multiple stakeholders.“Protecting nature cannot be separated from improving people’s lives, just as national conservation efforts cannot be separated from international cooperation,” he added.Jean-Guy Afrika, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board, said the mountain gorilla represented what sustained commitment, strong institutions, community participation and international partnerships could achieve.“This is an extraordinary conservation achievement, but it is also a reminder that our work must continue,” he said.Maurice Mugabowagahunde, Governor of Rwanda’s Northern Province, said Kwita Izina provides an opportunity to recognise the value of the country’s natural heritage, encourage communities to protect biodiversity and highlight the role of Volcanoes National Park in the development of local communities and Rwanda as a whole. 22 gorillas receive namesThe 22 newborn gorillas were given names reflecting values ranging from determination and courage to leadership, unity and commitment.Among them, H.E. Shaikha Al Nowais named a female gorilla Ishakwe, meaning “determination”, from the Muhoza family. Dominic Barton named a male from the Izuba family Mukondo, meaning “starting point” or “source”, while Paul Danforth named a male from the historic Susa family Shikama, meaning “stand strong”.Miguel Ángel Gil Marín named a male from the Pablo family Inkera, meaning “traditional celebration”, while Eng. Sadek Elsewedy and Anita Dravec named a male from the Hirwa family Rugamba, meaning “fighter”.Other names included Mucyo (“light”), named by Olivier and Quitterie Granet; Ngabonzima (“protector”), named by Garreth and Nicola Wood; and Ndongozi (“leader”), named by Aston Villa legend James Chester.Susan Hollern named a female Kambere, while Rwandan filmmaker Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo named a baby from the Humura family Bukaka, meaning “majesty, strength and power”.Francesco Calvo named a male from the Kwitonda family Ngoga, meaning “brave” or “courageous”, while David Lappartient named a male from the Kwisanga family Muhuza, meaning “one who connects” or “brings together”.The remaining names were Komezutsinde (“keep winning”), Mpinga (“on the top”), Tarama (“to socialise/come together”), Impeta (“award/symbol of recognition”), Igeno (“destiny”), Ruhembe (“at the forefront”), Ndahiro (“commitment”), Ntwarane (“united in pursuit of a common goal”), Muganura (“harvest/thanksgiving”) and Nkwakuzi (“brave persons”).Among the Namers were Olympic high-jump champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, former French international footballers Mamadou Sakho and Patrice Evra, filmmaker Alastair Fothergill, Rwandan gospel singer Israel Mbonyi, Miss Belgium 2024 Kenza Johanna Ameloot and Nyungwe National Park ranger Jeannette Uwimbabazi.With this year’s additions, the number of mountain gorillas named through Kwita Izina since the event became an official annual ceremony in 2005 has reached 460.  Music, dance and cultureIn addition to the naming of the gorillas, Kwita Izina 2026 was marked by a celebration of Rwandan culture. Musicians, dance groups and folkloric performers were part of the programme in Kinigi.Drums, traditional dances, distinctive clothing and choreographed performances gave the ceremony the character of a grand popular celebration, bringing together the protection of nature with Rwanda’s traditions and cultural identity.Among the artists involved in the event was Rwandan singer Israel Mbonyi, a leading name in East African gospel music and one of the guests selected to participate in the naming of the gorillas.The 2026 edition brought together guests from different countries and fields of expertise, including representatives from sports, culture, tourism, business and environmental conservation.  Conservation and communitiesMore than 1,060 mountain gorillas now live in the wild across the Virunga Massif and Bwindi ecosystem. Mountain gorillas are the only great ape whose wild population continues to increase, following decades of cooperation among governments, conservation organisations, researchers, veterinarians, rangers and local communities.Kwita Izina also highlights the link between conservation, tourism and community development.Under Rwanda’s Tourism Revenue Sharing Programme, 10% of national park tourism revenues is reinvested in communities surrounding protected areas. More than RWF 23 billion has so far supported nearly 1,300 community projects, including schools, health centres, water infrastructure and livelihood initiatives.This year’s celebrations also included the groundbreaking of the Smart Green Village in Kinigi, part of the wider Volcanoes Community Resilience Project.As part of its long-term conservation vision, Rwanda plans to expand Volcanoes National Park by approximately 3,740 hectares and establish around 6,620 hectares of buffer zones. The broader programme is expected to improve livelihoods for more than 17,000 people.Kwita Izina, which means “to give a name” in Kinyarwanda, draws on Rwanda’s centuries-old tradition of naming newborn children in the presence of family and community.Since becoming an official annual event in 2005, the ceremony has evolved into an international platform celebrating Rwanda’s conservation achievements while recognising the contribution of communities and partners to protecting mountain gorillas and their habitat. Qatar squash, padel teams set sights on Asian Games medals

Leading Qatar’s challenge in squash will be Abdullah al-Tamimi, who won the bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation has announced its squash and padel teams for the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, with both squads targeting strong performances and medals at the continental event in Japan from September 19 to October 4.The participation is particularly significant for Qatar’s padel team, as the sport will make its first official appearance at the Asian Games. Qatar will enter the competition with growing confidence after establishing itself as one of the leading teams in the region and recording strong results at Arab and Asian level.In squash, Qatar will aim to challenge for medals in both the singles and team events, with the squad drawing on considerable experience from Asian and international competitions.The squash delegation comprises head coach Amir Wajih Radwan, team manager Nasser Ahmed al-Obaidli and players Abdullah al-Tamimi, Syed Azlan Iqbal, Salem Yousef al-Malki and Ali Ahmed al-Darwish.Leading Qatar’s challenge will be al-Tamimi, who won the bronze medal in the men’s singles at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. He also claimed silver at the 2025 Asian Squash Championships in Malaysia.Al-Tamimi has enjoyed a series of notable results on the international circuit, including victory at the Cape Town Squash Championship in South Africa in 2024. He also won the Qatar Challenger Championship and the Atlanta and Qatar Professional Championships in 2023.Qatar’s padel delegation includes coaches Pablo Nicolas Sisti and Florencia Sofia Galdo, administrator Rashid Abdullah Al-Baeer and players Rashid Nawaf Nayef, Mishari Nawaf Nayef, Hassan Adel Wali, Mohammed Saadoun al-Kuwari, Maha Abdul Redha Faramarzi, Hanan Hassan al-Abdulrahman, Mariam Mansour Al-Sultan and Dana Mohammed al-Mudahka.Qatar finished runners-up at the inaugural Asian Padel Championships in Doha in 2025, winning the silver medal. The team also qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 2021 after defeating Japan in the final of the Asia-Africa qualifiers.The national team won the inaugural Gulf Padel Challenge Cup in 2022 and continued its progress at this year’s Gulf Games in Doha, where it recorded victories over Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.Preparations for the Asian Games have included intensive camps for the squash team, focusing on physical conditioning as well as technical and tactical development. The players have also competed in a series of demanding friendly matches to sharpen their competitive readiness.The padel squad has concentrated on improving understanding and coordination between its pairs, with particular attention on Mohammed Saadoun Al-Kuwari and Hassan Adel Wali. The preparations have included domestic and overseas training camps.Tariq Zainal, Secretary General of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation, said the two teams are fully prepared for the Asian Games and confident of producing strong performances.Zainal said the preparations had strengthened the teams’ ambitions and expressed confidence in the players’ ability to advance deep into the competitions and challenge for medals.He added that the federation’s ambitions extend beyond medals to the continued development of racket sports in Qatar, encouraging younger generations to take up the sports and strengthening Qatar’s presence on the Asian and international stages.Qatar will send a 243-athlete delegation to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with 184 men and 59 women competing across 26 sports and 32 disciplines under 18 sports federations. The overall delegation will comprise 427 people, including athletes, technical and administrative staff, officials and media representatives.  Related Story Source link
