Al Sadd thrash Al Gharafa 4-1 to make it three in a row

Al Sadd thrashed Al Gharafa 4-1 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Saturday to make it three straight wins in the Qatar Stars League (QSL). The unbeaten defending champions moved top of the table with nine points, while Al Gharafa slipped to ninth with three points after suffering their second defeat. Yusuf Abdurisag began the goal-scoring for The Wolves converting a Roberto Firmino cross with ease in the very 5th minute of the game. Abdurisag then did a celebratory jig along with Akram Afif and Firmino much to the delight of their fans. The Al Sadd mood continued with Claudinho added a second goal in the 12th minute. Left unmarked, the Brazilian midfielder flicked in an Afif lob to score.Afif himself joined the party in the second session (50th minute) as he broke through the ranks and beat the rival goalkeeper depositing the ball in the right corner. Al Gharafa got one on board in the 82nd minute as Yacine Brahimi collected a Florinel Coman cross to shoot high centre into the net.Al Sadd however continued to rule the roost and a fast break in the 90+3′ saw Firmino sliding, inside right in the box, to connect a Boualem Khoukhi assist. A fifth for Al Sadd seemed on its way in a final stoppage-time attempt but Younes El Hannach’s shot from the right side of the box was cut off in the top centre by Al Gharafa’s goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar. Al Duhail hold Al Rayyan 1-1Earlier at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Duhail held Al Rayyan to a 1-1 draw in their third round match. The result ended The Lions’ winning run but took their tally to 7 points, while Al Duhail moved to 5 points with their second draw result in the league so far.Al Rayyan made an early breakthrough with Roger Guedes directing home a Jassem Gaber header following a corner kick in the 5th minute of the match. Al Duhail came close to equalizing in added time of first half but Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada stood in the way.The Red Knights succeeded later in the 72nd minute when an alert Tahsin Mohammed cashed in on a defence error. He grabbed the ball and made a left-footed strike from top of the box into the left corner. Al Rayyan pushed hard for a winner towards the end but it remained elusive.  Related Story Source link

Champions Arsenal deliver statement fightback to end Chelsea’s flying start

(Reuters) Arsenal delivered an emphatic response to Chelsea’s emergence as potential Premier League title contenders with a 2-1 win that ended their rivals’ unbeaten start yesterday.Mikel Arteta’s side trailed to Morgan Rogers’ second-minute goal in a pulsating London derby at the Emirates Stadium. But the champions showed why they are firm favourites to retain the title with a blistering response to that early setback.Kai Havertz bagged the equaliser against his former club midway through the first half and Martin Odegaard netted Arsenal’s winner soon after the interval. It was a statement of intent from second-placed Arsenal, who have won all three league matches to sit behind leaders Manchester City on goal scored.The Gunners’ mature display underlined their desire to win the club’s first back-to-back titles since the 1930s. For Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the defeat ended his three-game winning run in all competitions since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the close-season.Alonso will realise just how much work Chelsea still have to do before they are in position to end a title drought dating back to 2017. Chelsea’s shaky defence is prone to costly miscues, while their vaunted attack found it harder to flourish against Arsenal than in their free-scoring wins over Fulham, Luton and Brighton.Arteta and Alonso have known each other since their days as childhood friends in the Basque region of Spain. The chaotic matches of their youth on a gravel pitch in the Berio district of San Sebastian would have seemed calm in comparison to the blood and thunder their teams brought to a raucous corner of north London.Chelsea beat Arsenal in the race to sign Rogers from Aston Villa in the close-season after the Gunners refused to match the Blues’ £117mn ($158mn) bid for the England midfielder. Rogers showed why Chelsea made him the most expensive British player in history as he put the Blues ahead after just 77 seconds.Arsenal’s rock-solid defence had allowed just one shot on target in their first two games. So often masters of the set-piece, Arteta’s men were found wanting at a free-kick for once.Reece James’ lofted delivery wasn’t cleared by Declan Rice or Odegaard, giving Rogers the chance to drive a low volley past David Raya from the edge of the penalty area. It was the first goal conceded by Arsenal this season.Having conceded five times in their first two league games under Alonso, Chelsea’s three-man central defence remains flawed and they were exposed again in the 25th minute. Havertz was allowed to drift from the right flank to the edge of the area unchecked by Jorrel Hato before the German smashed a low strike through the slow to react Maxence Lacroix’s legs and past Emiliano Martinez at his near post.Pedro Neto was inches away from restoring Chelsea’s lead just before half-time when the Portugal winger slapped his shot against the far post. Where Chelsea were profligate, Arsenal have developed a ruthless touch in front of goal.They exploited Chelsea’s weakness at the back to net with a superb-crafted move in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis has made an impressive start following his close-season move from Club Brugge and the Greek winger’s incisive pass sliced through the Chelsea defence to Havertz.The German’s clever dummy let the ball run through to Odegaard and he kept his composure to slot home from 10 yards.Rogers’ angry clash with Rice prompted mocking chants of “you should have signed for a big club” from Arsenal fans. Chelsea had chances to silence the taunts, but Malo Gusto blazed over from a good position before Estevao Willian’s rocket was tipped over by Raya in the final minutes.Earlier, Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a superb strike with virtually the last kick of the game to snatch a 2-2 draw for the Toffees against Manchester United.Maitland-Niles’s arrival from Lyon on the final day of the transfer window was overshadowed by Everton’s failure to reinforce their attack. But the former Arsenal full-back lasered a long-range shot into the top corner in the 96th minute to punish a lacklustre United performance.Bryan Mbeumo fired United in front inside the first minute of the second period. But an Everton side short on attacking options rallied to level through Tyrique George.Substitute Benjamin Sesko’s header looked to have won United all three points. But the decision not to reinforce Michael Carrick’s defence will face more scrutiny as United have conceded twice in all of their opening three games of the Premier League season.  Related Story Source link

‘Nothing has changed’: FIFA confirms Infantino to run for re-election

Should he be re-elected, Gianni Infantino will continue to serve as head of world football until 2031.  Gianni Infantino will stand in next March’s FIFA presidential election, despite the backlash over his now-abandoned plan to bring private investment into the World Cup, football’s global governing body announced.”The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” a FIFA spokesperson said. “Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”The 56-year-old Swiss has taken a pummelling since the announcement in late July of his short-lived FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan to bring private investment into FIFA events. But now for the first time since the plan became public, FIFA has reiterated Infantino’s intention to run for a fourth and final term in next year’s elections.Should he be re-elected, he will continue to serve as head of world football until 2031. Infantino is in Poland for the Women’s Under-20 World Cup, but refused to answer queries about his future when questioned by journalists on Saturday.European body UEFA has accused Infantino of “criminal mismanagement” over the scheme and was the ringleader of the initial fightback to the announcement, including threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups, if it was not shelved.If UEFA withdrew its threat to boycott FIFA tournaments on August 27 – ahead of the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland – it remains absolute in its conviction that Infantino must depart his role.The European body has filed requests in the USA for the disclosure of documents related to the plan from FIFA and partners. If successful in gaining access to the documents, UEFA had said it intends to lodge a legal complaint in Switzerland, saying it has been assured the case would meet the requirements to be heard in a Swiss court.It has also found solid support from North American body CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in its actions against Infantino. The three confederations have kept up the pressure and collaborated on a no-holds-barred joint letter issued last month.”Leadership in football is not a possession. It is not about holding – or demanding – power to be held,” they wrote.CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is widely seen as the likeliest challenger to Infantino – UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin has ruled himself out.Montagliani, a FIFA vice-president, had long been regarded as a close ally of Infantino, but there were signs, even before he distanced himself over the now-scrapped plan to allow private investment into World Cups, that he viewed FIFA’s purpose somewhat differently to the Swiss.But Infantino is not without friends – 2034 World Cup hosts Saudi Arabia came out in support last month, with African football’s governing body CAF and South America’s CONMEBOL supportive, too.Earlier in September, FIFA also accused UEFA of a “smear campaign” and a “fishing expedition” against Infantino. As the only declared candidate so far for the election due to take place in Rabat, Infantino will need a simple majority of votes from the 211 federations affiliated to FIFA to extend his term of office, which began in 2016 and was renewed in 2023.Candidate nominations for next year’s election must be submitted by November 18.  Related Story Source link

South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 48 runs to lift Tri-Series trophy
