Antonelli relieved to get 'tough win' in Belgium

Kimi Antonelli showed relief and satisfaction on Sunday after taking full advantage of Mercedes team-mate George Russell's misfortunes to extend his lead in the drivers' championship with a calm win in the Belgian Grand Prix.His victory ended a three-race winless streak and lifted the Italian 50 points clear of the luckless Russell, who slipped to third in the title race after colliding with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap.’It feels very nice to be back on the top step after a few difficult races,’ said the 19-year-old Antonelli.’It was a hard-fought race. We lost first place with the virtual safety car and then we managed to make our way back — and it was a tough win because Charles was quick and we had to hold on to that.’I think the momentum was always there, so it was just about getting the result.’Hamilton survived his clash with Russell to finish fourth on track behind second-placed Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc and four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.The Briton climbed to second in the championship, 45 behind Antonelli.Antonelli admitted he had been fortunate to score maximum points on a day when Russell was forced to retire again.’We were a bit lucky with what happened, in terms of the championship, but that is why you have to take every opportunity — because we saw that it can really swing the situation.’Now, we just have to keep performing, keep bringing the results and then we will see what will happens at the end of the year.’After reliability problems in Spain and Britain deprived him of any points, Antonelli had to stay calm under instruction from Mercedes to come home 1.9 seconds ahead of Leclerc.He recovered from losing his lead, after a good start from his pole position, during a virtual safety car intervention that favoured Ferrari and others.'STRUGGLING'Leclerc, who won the last race at Siverstone, fought hard to stay in contention and took a second place which leaves him fourht in the title race, 78 points behind Antonelli.’I believed in the win until the end. We had a little bit of luck with the VSC at the right time for us, but the pace was relatively strong.’There were five or six laps, on the hards, where I was struggling with the front axle and then it came back a little bit.’I felt better with the car. There's still some work to do, but it's a step forward.’Verstappen said he and Antonelli had been unlucky with the VSC that gave Ferrari and others a 'cheap stop' in the race.’I tried everything I could in the race,’ he said.’The first stint was not too bad, the second stint probably a bit more difficult. But at the same time, I think Kimi and I, we got a little bit unlucky with the virtual safety car.’For us, to be on the podium is good. I gave it everything I had, so actually P3 is good.’  Source link

Sindhu wins Japan Open to end title drought, Popov clinches men’s trophy

Indian badminton star Pusarla Venkata Sindhu ended a title drought of almost two years at the Japan Open on Sunday and said winning would give her “a lot of confidence”.Sindhu, a world champion in 2019 and Olympic silver medallist in 2016, beat Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in Tokyo to win the competition for the first time.It was her first title since she won the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow in 2024.Sindhu has set her sights on a medal on home soil when New Delhi hosts the world championships next month, and she said her win in Japan would boost her chances.”This one was very important because playing in finals is one thing, but winning and getting that gold is a different thing altogether,” the 31-year-old said.”I’m happy that I’m on the positive side. This gives me a lot of confidence.”Sindhu was playing in her first final since winning in Lucknow, after losing in the semi-finals twice on badminton’s world tour this year.She is currently ranked number 10 in the world.Sindhu jumped out to an early lead against world number three Yamaguchi and held on to take the first game.She clinched the title when Yamaguchi hit a shot that was called in, only for Sindhu to successfully overturn it with a challenge.”I had tears in my eyes because it was really important to me,” Sindhu said. “I am working hard and focusing hard on myself.”I kept believing that I could do it, even though a lot of people were wondering what was happening.”POPOV WINS MEN’S TITLEFrance’s Christo Popov captured the men’s singles title, beating Japan’s Koki Watanabe 21-11, 21-19 in the final.It was Popov’s third title of the year, following wins at the European Championships and German Open.”It’s a great performance, it’s one of the biggest things I’ve done in my life,” said world number five Popov, who was the fifth seed in Tokyo.”I’m actually very happy to do it in Japan. I’ve always liked the country, the culture and respect.”Popov said his performances in Tokyo had convinced him that he can win a medal at the world championships.”I know it’s very difficult, way harder than here,” the 24-year-old said.”I think the pressure is much higher as well and the players will be ready 100 percent there.”I want a medal, that’s my goal.”China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping won the mixed doubles title, beating Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet 21-14, 14-21, 21-15.South Korea’s Kim Hye-Jeong and Kong Hee-yong won the women’s doubles title after an epic battle against China’s Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian, eventually triumphing 14-21, 21-15, 30-29.Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri beat South Korean top seeds Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae 21-19, 21-17 in the men’s doubles final.  Related Story Source link

Tankers hit Hormuz mines: IRGC

REUTERS/Stringer Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said yesterday that two oil tankers exploded after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as the US and Tehran continued to trade drone and missile strikes.“An hour ago, two oil tankers, which were trying to pass through the minefield south of the Strait of Hormuz by deceptive American intelligence agencies, exploded and caught fire,” the Guards said in a statement published by state news agency IRNA, without identifying which tankers are being mentioned. The Revolutionary Guards also said on state television they “stopped” four ships trying to transit the critical waterway.US forces, meanwhile, reported striking Iran for the seventh consecutive night with attacks designed to “continue degrading Iranian military capabilities,” according to a statement by US Central Command shared on X. In the biggest escalation since the foes resumed hostilities, Iran accused US forces of targeting civilian infrastructure, including an airport, a railway station and two bridges, and said it had struck US assets across the region.Major General Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, said Tehran will resume “full-scale offensive operations” if US strikes against it continue for another two or three days.“Iran will no longer limit itself to retaliatory, like-for-like responses…and no political border will be safe,” Rezaei said, according to the Iranian news agency IRIB. The war began on February 28 with deadly US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which retaliated by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping channel for much of the world’s oil, and launching attacks on Israel and American interests across the Gulf.Iranian Revolutionary Guards aerospace force commander Majid Mousavi said “targeted strikes from across Iran against the enemy will continue” until the US ends operations against Iran’s coastal facilities in the southand around the strait. David Khalfa, a Middle East specialist at the Jean-Jaures Foundation, a Paris-based think-tank, noted that a “widening range of strategic infrastructure” is now being drawn into the conflict.“The paradox is that, while the conflict continues to escalate,neither side has a strategic interest in allowing this dynamic tocontinue. Yet both perceive any compromise as a form of capitulation,” Khalfa told AFP. Iran’s energy ministry urged citizens to reduce their electricity use and switch off air conditioners in peak hours — even as temperatures in some areas soared — after the power grid came under strain from what it said were US strikes on energy facilities. Iran’s military had threatened infrastructure across the region in the event of any attacks on its own, and on Friday launched widespread strikes.Iran’s Guards said they had attacked two US radar sites in Oman and the Al-Tanf military base in Syria. A Syrian military source denied there had been an attack and US forces said they had withdrawn from the base earlier this year.Jordan’s military said it shot down three Iranian missiles.In Bahrain, Tehran targeted US helicopters and planes at an airbase, Iranian state media reported, with the island nation urging citizens to take shelter.Iran’s health ministry said at least 38 people have been killed and more than 400 wounded in the country since fighting resumed.  Source link

Kuwait says another Iranian attack on water, power plant causes fire

An Iranian attack on a power and water plant in Kuwait caused a fire for the second day in a row on Sunday, Kuwaiti authorities said, as Tehran retaliates to US strikes with attacks across the Gulf region.”As a result of the heinous Iranian agression on Kuwait, a power and water distillation plant, for the second time in two days, has been subjected to an attack that caused a fire in some facilities of the station,” the Kuwaiti ministry of electricity, water and renewable energy said in a statement on X, adding that firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze.  Source link

Jordan govt denies to AFP evacuation of Aqaba airport, seaport

Jordan's government denied to AFP on Sunday that authorities had ordered the evacuation of the airport and seaport in the coastal city of Aqaba, after the US embassy in Amman said the transport hubs had been evacuated over a threat. Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani told AFP that ‘authorities have not issued any decisions to evacuate Aqaba Airport or the seaport, and both are operating normally’, adding that no ‘potential threats’ had been detected.The US embassy in Amman had said earlier that Jordanian authorities evacuated the airport and the seaport in Aqaba, citing an unspecified threat.’Due to a specific and credible threat, Jordanian authorities evacuated the international airport and seaport in Aqaba. We strongly advise all Americans to refrain traveling to either the airport or seaport,’ the embassy said in a statement.Momani however said that ‘the relevant Jordanian authorities issue warnings for any possible threats in accordance with pre-prepared procedures, including setting off sirens immediately’.’The relevant Jordanian authorities did not monitor any possible threats over the past hours,’ he added.The US embassy statement comes after the US military announced that two service members were killed in Jordan and one went missing following a barrage of Iranian strikes on Friday.It marked the first fatalities among its forces since fighting with Iran resumed this month.  Source link
