West Indies great Sobers dies at 89

Former West Indies all-rounder Garry Sobers passed away at his home in Barbados. Garry Sobers, widely regarded as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, has died at ⁠the age of 89, West ⁠Indies Cricket announced on Friday.Known for his aggressive top-order batting, the ability to bowl medium fast and spin, and excellent fielding, ⁠Sobers represented West Indies in 93 Tests in an international career spanning two decades, from 1954 to 1974.He scored 26 centuries, and ⁠his knock of ⁠365 ⁠not out against Pakistan in 1958 was the highest individual score in a test innings until Brian Lara broke his record in 1994. Sobers was born with two extra fingers – one on each hand. He removed them himself as a boy, using catgut and a sharp knife.Sobers would go on to become the most complete cricketer to play the game. A graceful and destructive left-handed batsman, a left-arm bowler equally skilled at delivering pace and spin, and a brilliant fielder in any position, Sobers was named one of the five leading cricketers of the 20th century by the sport’s Wisden Almanack.He came second only to prolific Australian batsman Don Bradman, who himself said of the player in 1988: “I’ve got no hesitation at all in saying that Garry Sobers is the greatest all-round cricketer I ever saw.”Reflecting on his achievements, Sobers often played ⁠down the importance of his natural talent. “People call me a genius. I don’t know much about geniuses,” he said late in his life.”But I do believe that what I achieved was not just because of the ability that I was born with but ⁠also because I worked hard.”Sobers amassed over 7,041 first-class runs for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, including 18 centuries, and took 281 wickets.“Nottinghamshire are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, at the age of 89,” a statement from the club read.    Related Story Source link

Lebanon FM reaffirms goal of full Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territory

Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji said Thursday that Lebanon’s objective in the negotiations is to secure a full Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territory.Speaking at a conference hosted by the French Senate under the title “Solidarity with Lebanon: Local Authorities at the Heart of the Franco-Lebanese Partnership,” Raji said the negotiations aim to gradually extend the authority of the Lebanese Armed Forces across the entire country, including the south. He stressed that no country can fully establish its institutions and sovereignty while part of its territory remains under occupation.He stated that the occupation weakens state institutions, fuels tensions, delays political and security stability, and prevents the state from exercising full authority over its territory. He added that lasting stability can only be achieved when the state has the sole legitimate authority to use force.Raji said that no state can enjoy full sovereignty while foreign military forces remain on its territory, nor can it achieve full sovereignty unless its legitimate institutions alone exercise public authority and hold the exclusive right to use force.He also called on France to expand its partnership with Lebanon beyond expressions of solidarity by supporting efforts to strengthen state institutions, reinforce stability, and enable the state to fully exercise its authority and responsibilities.Lebanon and the Israeli entity recently held a sixth round of negotiations at the US Embassy in Rome to discuss arrangements for implementing the agreement signed in Washington last June.  Related Story Source link

Flower rules himself out of contention as England Test head coach

Andy Flower has ruled himself out of contention for the vacant England Test head coach position, saying he is happy in franchise cricket and intends to remain in his current roles.The former Zimbabwe captain, who coached England from 2009 to 2014, had been considered ⁠among the favourites to succeed Brendon McCullum, who was sacked earlier this month after a run ⁠of poor results and amid continued scrutiny of the team’s culture.Flower, who coaches Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League and London Spirit in The Hundred, said he had spoken with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and managing director Rob Key about the role.”I have spoken with Rob (Key) and the ECB on that topic. The bottom line for me is that I’m very happy in the ⁠work that I’m doing at the moment,” Flower told reporters at Lord’s on Friday during London Spirit’s media day.”I work for a couple of really good organisations, I’ve got really good teams around me, really good people around me. I’m really comfortable with what I’m doing at the moment.”As England coach, Flower oversaw home and away Ashes victories as well as a Test series win in India. Since leaving the national side, he has enjoyed considerable success in ⁠franchise cricket, most recently leading RCB to back-to-back IPL ⁠titles.”I’ve worked with England ⁠before and I had an amazing time when I had the privilege to be England head coach… and it would be a privilege for me or anyone else to be the Test coach,” he said.”But for me at this time, I’m really comfortable with what I’m doing. I’m going to stick with doing that.”McCullum was appointed in 2022 shortly after Ben Stokes became test captain and oversaw the aggressive style of cricket dubbed “Bazball”. England lost 20 of their 49 tests under the New Zealander, including seven of their last nine, and failed to win a five-test series against either Australia or India.   Related Story Source link

Fire extinguished at power station, electricity generation units affected following Iranian attack

Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said Friday that the fire that broke out at one of its power generation and water distillation plants was brought under control after it was attacked by Iran, affecting a large number of electricity generation units. In a statement, the ministry said that the attack prompted the activation of emergency plans to contain the impact and maintain grid stability. It added that Kuwait Fire Force teams brought the fire under control, while the ministry’s emergency and technical teams, in coordination with relevant authorities, began assessing the damage, securing the plant and restoring affected units to service as quickly as possible.  Source link
